What do you think is the Final Fantasy game with the worst (highest) random encounter rate?

I just got the idea for this as I'm currently playing IV: The After Years and the encounter rate in this game is INSANELY high. It's ridiculous. Almost turns me off on the game. ALMOST!

FF3 nes.

This is the first game to really turn me off towards games.

I mean i end up being overleveled because of the stupid encounter rate and the game ends up being too easy.

I saw a guy who was killing the final boss at like level 48 i think? 50? i can't remember and i was like level 65.

I tried really hard not to overlevel but its impossible because you can't run away ever.

If you run away in the nes version your defense goes to 0 and enemies pounce on you doing triple the amount of damage.

In ff2 nes you couldn't run away but at least you could use frog/mini as a cheap way to end the fight, but you still also end up overpowered because casting spells makes them more powerful
.
At least it doesn't overpower you as much.

I agree that the encounter rate in FF3 (NES) is insane. Actually, all the original NES ones had pretty high rates. Then there were the rooms in FF2 where there was nothing in them...except for lots and lots of fights.

I'd say the 2-D FF's had the worst encounter rates, and FFX-2 also had a high encounter rate from what I recall too.

I didn't have a problem with X-2, especially since there are relatively-easy-to-get accessories that lower or eliminate the encounter rate.

EDIT: Plus, that's a game where it's easy to end up under-leveled if you're hasty, and being under-leveled in that game is death.

Really? I thought the last dungeon(s) of FF3 NES were absolutely grueling, especially since they're extremely long with nowhere to save. I can't remember if the encounter rate was high or not, but I definitely wouldn't say the game is easy.

I'd say XII's encounter rate was the highest. Oh no wait, it didn't have an encounter rate.

Though I agree with Mtek slayer(shock and horror!) on this: FF3 was pretty high.

Yeah, II and III had pretty ruthless encounter rates. Also, though it's not REALLY a Final Fantasy games, FF Legend for Game Boy was unforgiving in encounters as well, I remember running into a battle every couple steps sometimes.

FF III is not "difficult", really. It's just...grindy.

I don't disagree, but the Crystal Tower and World of Darkness are absolutely unforgiving. Six (!!!) consecutive boss battles with no save point? So if you lose, you have to start all over AND climb the Crystal Tower again? It's a choose your poison scenario: risk your party and healing items (and sanity) trying to fight your way through the six boss battles, or spend hours grinding. And in the DS version, it isn't as simple as making your entire party Ninjas and Sages. I got that far before I gave up on FFIII.

But yeah, the encounter rate in FFIII is obnoxious. I find that the pace of battle (in the DS version, anyway) is also considerably (or maybe just seemingly) slower than that of the 2D games (i.e. the ones I'm used to). At least they fixed the "defense drops to zero when trying to run" issue.

I didn't notice an unusually high encounter rate in the DS version of FF3, but I will agree that the dead end rooms in FF2 (in both the Dawn of Souls and PSP version) are brutal. I think I once saw somewhere that the encounter rate in those rooms is in the 300% - 400% range! blink.gif

ff2 nes wasn't that hard either, its just that early on you lack the right tools and mid way through you get them making the game broken in some ways.

What sucked was:You had enemies who were too hard and bosses who were waaay too easy.
