Back in January I posted about the RPG I had created, named Regressia. Today I've uploaded a major update to the game, and to celebrate I'm giving free copies to members of the CoN. (Normally you'd have to pay $10 to unlock the full game).

Before I tell you how to get a subscription (for lack of a better word) to my game, take a moment to check out the website, read about what the game is, look at some screenshots, and see the enemy artwork. Go ahead, I'll wait.

.
.
.

So how do you get your free subscription? In the same way that Java programs are run by the Java vitual machine, my game is run by a software suite called BYOND, so you'll need to download that software in order to play. When you install and first run the program you'll be given the option of choosing a BYOND user name (called a 'key'). This one user name will allow you to play any of the games on BYOND. Once you have your user name, just post it as a reply to this thread, and I'll manually edit the website so that it thinks you paid the $10. You won't even have to wait for me, because the first part of the game is playable as a demo. So by the time you're done with the demo, I'll have added your name.

Download Regressia

Of course, if you really enjoy the game and have an extra couple bucks laying around, you could always donate them as a thank you. Enjoy playing!

Edit
There were a couple bugs in the last version that have now been fixed. If you are running version 1.11, it is recommended that you download version 1.12 (from the same address). Otherwise you may encounter a bug which will prevent you from completing the first quest.

Looks pretty spiffy! And nifty that, although seems a likely candidate for the RPG Maker genre, you did in a different platform I've not heard of. Very cool, very retro-chic. I'm definitely intrigued, and the website definitely helped.

I'll get back to you. Thanks for the post and heads up!

It's very cool and worth giving it a shot. R51 and I got access awhile back and it's very retro and very fun.

This looks like a great game, Iain. I'm a big fan of old school RPGs like the Dragon Warrior games, so I'm looking forward to checking this out. I just signed up for a BYOND account. My BYOND username is the same as my CoN name -- Psiren. biggrin.gif

I can't remember, IP, did I get the same access already that you're talking about in this thread? I never got very far in the game but I'd love to have another go. Let me know! smile.gif

Thanks for the replies. I tried to add your name to the list, Psiren, but BYOND couldn't find a user by that name. Are you sure your registration went through? Try this link: BYOND Locksmith.

Yeah - you, Neal, and Tiddles all received a subscription back when the game was first released. You'll get something extra when you play, though: A LvlOrb. This is an item that increases your level every time you use it (adults with jobs can't be expected to grind for levels, eh?). I can't remember if Neal and Tiddles get one, too. The game won't update itself, though, so you should download the new version. Just take the two files that are in the new zip, and put them into the old folder. This way you'll retain your settings.txt, player.sav, and activation.qst files.

Okay, my registration didn't go through the first time for some strange reason. I tried it again, and this time I did get a confirmation e-mail, so you should be able to find me this time. (Guess that explains why the game locked up on me after I defeated the Succubus, if that's where the demo portion ends.)

That's not where the demo portion ends :/

I did some last minute editing of the map before I released the update. Wanted to clean out some unused areas so the game might use a tad less memory. What happened is that I accidentally deleted an area that was needed (basically, where the boss goes after you defeat her) so there was that error there. I've fixed it, along with a couple other minor errors people reported (nothing as serious as what you encountered, though). Download the update from the same address as before, and just move the two files (dmb and rsc) from the zip into your Regressia folder. That way you keep your save file and settings.

I've also added you as a subscriber, so you should be able to access the rest of the game now. To activate Regressia, just log into the BYOND.exe program with your user name, and then start Regressia. After that, you shouldn't have to log into BYOND ever again if you don't want to.

Thanks for the bug report, and thanks for your interest!

Congrats, you are now a Regressia subscriber :)

Before you start the game next time you play, start BYOND.exe first and sign in with your name. That way Regressia will know who you are, and will write the activation info so you don't have to sign in or anything every again. Enjoy!

This game is what I've been looking for, for quite a while. The presentation is top notch and the names aren't overly reliant on the "X" and "Z" which I hate. It is an awesome game so far, and I've barely begun the first quest!

You've both been added. I hate to repeat myself, but sign into the BYOND.exe program before you start Regressia next time, so my game can access the internet and write your activation info. You'll never have to sign in again if you don't want to.

...Although, if you do sign in, then you can send me messages. One of the functions of that program is an Instant Messaging client for users of BYOND. My user name / key is IainPeregrine (with an i), and I keep it open almost all the time, so you could contact me any time you have a problem.

I hope it lives up to your expectations smile.gif
I also hate when authors throw in too much of something in order to make a language sound exotic. What's worse than X and Z is the apostrophe. Need an alien home world? How about Sph'y'ti'lik'?

Wow, I really love this game. It took a little getting used to, but it's been awesome so far.

Also, I loved how the demo ended. That caught me off guard.

Thanks, Iain. I was able to make it past the Succubus this time. happy.gif

I love Regressia so far. It really does feel like I'm playing a "newly discovered" RPG from the 8-bit era. Did encounter another tiny glitch, though. In the town of Willougnook, the item store will only sell torches, even when I try to buy bandages. (Not a big deal, since I just went back to Red Haven to stock up on bandages, but I figured you might want to know about that.)

Keep up the great work. I'm having fun with the game! thumbup.gif

I've been unable to reproduce this problem. Could you post some more info about your problem on my Regressia forum? That way we don't spam up this topic, and I get to have all my bug reports in one place where I won't forget about them:

http://www.byond.com/members/iainperegrine...=457&view=0#457

I'd particularly like to know:
-- What mission you're up to in the game
-- What operating system you're using
-- What version of Regressia are you playing (menu: help -> about)
-- What version of BYOND you're using. (Byond.exe menu: help -> about)

Thanks for the bug report, and I'm glad you're enjoying the game so far. Wait until you get to the towers, though >:)

Whoa, this is something that had completely passed me by. I've downloaded the game and registered on BYOND now, anyway. If this is still going (and I sure hope it is) my username there is Gigantuar (big surprise?).

This offer is meant as a thank you to the people at the CoN. Seeing as how you've only ever made one post on the CoN (it's in this thread), and that your BYOND key was registered before you ever registered here, I can only assume that you registered here only to get Regressia for free. I can't say as I blame you, I might have done the same thing! But that's not really what the deal was all about. If you really want to play, wait until Wednesday when I drop the price to $6 as a Yuletide sale. If you're a friend of someone here at the CoN, or something like that, tell them to send me a PM.

I haven't decided on one, but you're safe until Chistmas at least. Even if you can't play the game yet, you can register a user name and post it here, so I can get things done on my end, and it'll be ready when you're ready to play. Also, BYOND is a safe and non-intrusive program. I wouldn't worry about installing it on any computer (well, maybe not at work...), and it uninstalls cleanly.
