Hey guys, remember this? It used to be the Rare Entries III thread, but now it's an interest thread for Rare Entries IV. If you want to take part in a new Rare Entries game, or otherwise think that it'll be a good idea to revive it, then post here. If there is enough interest, then I'll try and have the first game set up in a few weeks.

Quote (FallingHeart @ 21st October 2010 20:59) Gonna smoke you suckas ...says the guy tied for 9th all-time on the Rare Entries scoring list. If I can definitely get at least 10-15 playing, then I'd be happy to start running this again, probably in the first week of November. I'd even throw in AmaCoN gift certificates as prizes if we get a lot of participants. I'm also trying to think of a good way to choose the first eight prompts, but more on that later. Now... does anyone have any questions? If any of you have questions, comments, complaints on how it was run in the past, or otherwise, please bring it up. If you've never played a Rare Entries game before and want to join, then feel free to ask. -------------------- |

Well, I've recently played Dragon Quest I, so...how about the magic spells Alef learns? There are nine of them.
For a second question, why not have people choose from the seven non-final bosses from Scurge: Hive? They are: * Scylla * Cyclops * Atlas * Jormugand * Heimdall * Mandragora * Cerberus Want more ideas for categories with vast ranges of item counts? Check out the weapons and items in Fire Emblem VII. There are 13 bows, 7 light tomes, 24 swords, 9 promotion items, among other choices. Uhhh, I didn't ask for prompt suggestions; at least not yet. I want to involve multiple CoN users, but I'm not going to accept prompts until I have a specific method for it down. Like I said in my last post, more on this later.
And GMH, you know I've beaten Hector Hard, right? I've played eight of the Fire Emblem games and beaten five of them. I know what Fire Emblem is. -------------------- |

Well, most people wouldn't have kept an items and weapons list handy, so I thought that site would be useful, in the course of suggesting that question.

I would suggest subscribing to this thread while Lasz (and I? I might be involved?) work out how we'll start accepting prompts, so you don't miss it when we talk about how to submit them and when the first round will kick off.

Hey, remember this? I'm about ready to start thinking about the first round of prompts... but not in the normal way.
I'll be officially soliciting suggestions and recommendations for Rare Entries prompts this Thursday, November 4th, in CoN's IRC channel, in the early afternoon and evening. I'll be in and out for several hours, and will happily take suggestions, ask questions, and endure abuse concerning the new Rare Entries game. If you can't make it there to harass me on Thursday, I might include a fallback date; if I do, I'll post the info here. But I want to make this perfectly clear: I'll only use prompts that either I create myself or are suggested to me on IRC. I want to encourage participation in Rare Entries, but I also want to encourage IRC traffic. So find me on IRC on Thursday, and the first round will begin a few days later. Cheers! I only received three responses to the call. If that's all the interest I'm going to get, then doing Rare Entries probably isn't worth it. Sorry, folks.

Well, frankly speaking, I think you tried killing two birds with one stone but left them both alive and just slightly bruised.
However, that said, I don't know how much more response you'd get if you asked here. So the stone probably wasn't enough to kill the bird anyway. A suggestion: Try announcing that you're going to do a game, and doing so in the News section, and put it in your sig, with a link to an appropriate post in this thread, so that more people who just browse other parts of the forum get word of it. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. For the record, while I think submissions only being accepted in chat for a few hours was much too tight and specific a guideline to be sensible, I don't like the implication that there is little reason to check out or hang out in the CoN IRC channel. There's a lot going on there - especially recently - that most CoN members can find some reason to stop by.

I second Neal's comment.
Also, though, I think that you should maybe start a new topic to re-introduce so that it's easier for people to know what's up. I was entirely unfamiliar with it until you mentioned it in chat, at which point it was too late for me to come up with any suggestions. -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! All right, fine, I'll give it another shot. But first...
GMH, what you did (come into IRC when you wouldn't normally) was what I was trying to accomplish. Still, I got only four responses total, three from chat regulars, and that indicated to me that I wouldn't get a good turnout. I didn't want to do it without a decent turnout, so I decided not to do it. Neal and DP, point made; I was being weird and specific and hoping for a semi-enthusiastic response, but got very little, but also probably should have been expecting that for being so weird and specific. But I will give it another chance now. Everyone, please send me suggestions for Rare Entries prompts via PM during the next week, before midday on Friday, November 12th. I will post the prompts in a new topic on Friday evening, four days from now, and allow the whole weekend for submitting entries. If you suggested stuff to me in chat, send them to me in PM; you're guaranteed in because you actually did it the first time. If I don't get at least... 9 or 10 responses, I'll get depressed, listen to Sunny Day Real Estate, and will decide to shut it down for another year or two. Also, some quick reminders on what makes a good RE prompt: 1. Try and keep the number of answers to the prompt between 6 and 12 choices. A little more than 12 is okay, but 12 or under is ideal. I want some high-scoring rounds. 2. The distribution for Rare Entries III will be the same for the second half of Rare Entries II - 3 prompts about CoN or games CoN covers, 3 prompts about video games in general, and 2 prompts about anything, ever. 8 prompts per round, barring tiebreakers or requests for user submissions. 3. Try the term "Rare Entries" in CoN's forum search function, and take a look at older rounds. Rare Entries II was a pretty good success I feel, so look to those rounds to see what makes a good prompt. and I might re-use some older prompts, deliberately or not. 4. If you have any questions at all about rules, prompts, or anything else, PM me, find me in chat or AIM, or post them here. I'll do what I can. -------------------- |

There are about 48 hours left in the submission phase, and I only have submissions from 2 people. I'll need more if I actually run this.

What I would suggest is that maybe if you're not getting the support you're looking for right now, we pin this topic and let the interest come as it comes and you just hold on to what you do get for later. It's not much different than CoN quizzes - it works a lot better if you have dozens of questions/prompts lined up and ready to go before you start rather than having to scramble each time around, in my opinion.
To that end, I split off all of the new posts from the old topic, and gave you a new topic to play with. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? You're right. So, I decided: **** it. I want to start a round. People aren't submitting prompts, so I'll do it myself.
The first round of Rare Entries IV begins NOW Here's the topic, complete with cash prize! First, I'll explain some rules. Rare Entries is an online game executed through forums, mailing lists, chat rooms, etc. It's similar to the party board game Scattergories. I present a list of prompts, usually related to video games. You, the participants send me a list with an answer to each prompt. Try to make your answers as unique as possible - basically, give answers that you think other participants won't say. For every prompt, your score is the number of people that had the same answer. For example, let's say one prompt is "Playable characters in Street Fighter II - The World Warrior." If Neal submits Zangief as his answer and no one else submits Zangief, then he gets a perfect score of 1 for the prompt. If Rangers51, laszlow, and footbigmike all submit Guile, but no one else does, then each of them gets a score of 3 for the prompt. Rare Entries is a game where the lowest score wins, like golf, so you want to have as many 1s and 2s as possible. If Neal's final score for four prompts is 1, 2, 2, 3, then his final score is 12 (1 x 2 x 2 x 3). Again, you're playing for a low score here so a perfect score is 100% unique answers, for a total score of 1. When we have a good 15-20 players playing, the winning score is in the low hundreds. In the earliest days of Rare Entries, when we had only 5-10 people playing, we once had a winning score of 2. Check out the above link to play in the first round. If you have any questions, comments, complaints, anything at all, post them here. Feel free to use the forum search function to check out old Rare Entries games. The official game thread will be locked until the first round is over. But wait, there's more! I'm still accepting prompt submissions for round 2, which will begin a few days after round 1 ends. So keep those coming, please. Or have them start coming, because I still only have 3 responses. This post has been edited by laszlow on 11th November 2010 20:43 -------------------- |

There are about two days remaining in the first round (of many, hopefully) of Rare Entries IV. The more people that enter, the more money the prize is worth, the higher the scores will run up; if you haven't entered yet, get on it!

With 24 hours to go I have... eight submissions for this round of Rare Entries. This simply shall not do. If you want to take part in the game and win some money (and drive the prize up above $8), then send me some responses! Again, the link is two posts above me.

*Puts on the broken record again*
You have approximately 12 hours before the door is closed on Rare Entries submissions, right now I have 12 submissions, which isn't bad but I want more. As such, the prize money is also set at $12, but it could get higher with your help! -------------------- |
