So I bought it because I basically have Final Fantasy fever.
![]() By that, I mean I've been playing through Final Fantasy games non-stop for about a year now. I've played through FFIV: The After Years, FFVII, FFVIII, FFXIII, FFI, FFIX, FFIV DS, FFVII again, FFXII, FFV, FFVI, FFIV: The After Years again and now I'm on IX again. ![]() So I bought III. I would've played it already, but I hear the first three games in the series don't have very good stories, so I've just been kind of stalling with it. So I just wonder if it's worth playing? Kind of late now to be asking since you already bought it. I would just play it. I didn't enjoy it particularly but I'm not super old school FF. I'm mid-old school FF.

Well... it's pretty good, but I'd put it in the bottom half of the FF games I've played. It's hard to sit through that job system when you've played FF Tactics or FF V. But it's far from bad, I'd definitely at least give it a shot.

I enjoyed it, though I admit it's been a while since I played it. I wasn't crazy about adding 'characterization' to the Light Warriors, not on principle, but just because I don't think the characters were all that interesting. But it gets pushed to the sidelines pretty quick and it's quite similar to the NES game we all know and love(?). I prefer the original, mainly due to nostalgia reasons, but the remake was pretty fun. Still haven't played the DS version of IV, which I'd really like to, heard good things about it. But I can say III was good times.
Though to be fair, since you brought up the stories of I-III, yeah, they're not really anything special. III's story is, in a nutshell, "You find a crystal and it tells you to save the world" which honestly is even less of a story than I's weird time travel thing. But just play it as an oldschool RPG as opposed to something with a grand, sweeping tale to tell, and you'll have some fun. It's worse than the NES version. Better graphics but the enemies are harder and some jobs become castrated (some jobs do get better). Sweet music though, and the opening FMV is suh-weet

I think I read there are no save points in FFIII's dungeons. Is that true?
Also, do you get to switch job classes throughout the game, like in FFV? Or are you stuck with one set class that you choose? I know what some of you might be thinking "Just play it and find out." but I'm still playing FFIX so I don't want to play it just yet. I'm just trying to figure out some things about it first. You can switch jobs at any time. One funny thing, after you switch, there's a "cooldown" where your stats are low for a few battles before you get normal. You can't switch classes willy-nilly like in V or Tactics.
And yes, there are no save points in dungeons. It makes things very difficult, especially for the final area, which is 2 giant dungeons in a row with no break between 6 bosses, the final one of which is a doozy. -------------------- |

It's hard. I'm only a few hours in, and I've had it since Apirl. I have no CLUE how ANYONE could possibly beat the endgame.

I'm kind of not a fan of it. The music seems less impressive than the Nintendo original, which may sound completely strange because NES music is kind of squeaky, but say for the boss theme for a example, even though it has that NES "squeaky" sound, it just seems more upbeat and more like a theme. While in the DS game the bit that should be the addictive, adrenaline pumping part is quiet and in the background, which is saddening. It's really difficult too, and phoenix downs are hard to get and find in battles. The game is alright, it's not awful. But it's kind of hard and the music is a disappointment. I would prefer FF V to it and say that FF V is the better game. FF V is kind of familiar to FF III, so you could either love or loathe FF III for that reason. Or feel like you're playing FF V over again 'cept with different characters and dungeons. -------------------- Currently playing Chrono Trigger !! Currently looking forward to Don't Know. |

Thanks everybody. I've decided to play it after I beat IX.
And apparently, it's hard huh? Is it really hard? Because everyone said FFIV DS was really hard, but I didn't have too much trouble with it. -------------------- |

It's challenging, definitely. Having to farm for Phoenix Downs rather than being able to buy them is frustrating. There are also a couple of dungeons that you can only access in mini form. If you rely on fighter-types rather than mages in such places, you're pretty much up the creek, since physical attacks are useless while you're mini. And having played FFV first, I found the job system in FFIII somewhat disappointing. I missed not being able to learn abilities that I could use as a Freelancer, and being limited to a certain number of spells per level rather than having magic points made it difficult, too.
That said, I still thought it was a fun game and have no regrets about buying it. As an old school RPG, it succeeds. It's just not my personal favorite installment of the series. I got many hours of enjoyment out of it, and considering how difficult the endgame was with its lack of save points and the sheer number of bosses, it gave me a real sense of accomplishment to beat the game. Have fun, Fatal. And good luck! ![]() |

Psiren, are you talking about the NES or DS version?
And yeah, now I remember the "mini" feature! I always thought it was just another pesky status ailment in FFIV (that seemed like a clone of Toad, even) before I played FFIII. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. I was referring to the DS version of FFIII in my previous post. Never played the original NES version, so I don't have anything to compare it to.
And yeah, the parts of the game where you have to turn mini to get into certain dungeons (and stay mini once you're inside) are the stuff of nightmares. Of course, that's probably my fault for not having enough mages on the team. ![]() |

I asked because I've played the NES version, and your description of the DS version is quite reminiscent of my experience with my version. I guess it really wasn't changed that much--especially with people's reports that it's pretty difficult.

Heh, I liked the mini dungeons...and the Magnetic Cave...and the Fork Tower. I actually always like those areas that restricted your abilities, I kind of miss them.

The game sort of hints in that direction if you talk to the NPCs. |

This game is incredibly difficult. I'm less than ten hours in, and I'm already stuck. But other than, it's a blast.
