Castlevania may be hard, but its a cakewalk next to the ninja gaiden series.

This second installment is so hard that its best to take a rest in between like i did.

The second game's last level is absolutely filled with birds and running guys and guys who throw stuff at you.

If you don't know what to do,you are as good as dead and until you learn the layout and the patterns, you won't survive.

I've been playing the game since 12 am more or less to about 1almost 11 pm.

With several breaks of course and I died ALOT!! there is no way around this.

Unless you know the game by heart and remember every single enemy and jump, you are going to die a lot.

I beat it 100% legit too.

No cheats or savestates,so it was the hardest game i've ever beaten.

Right now i need a rest.

I am thinking maybe something easy to rest my hands and relax my spirit.

I play hard games better when i'm relaxed.

Apparently, I'm just a different style of gamer. Even slight difficulty annoys me. That's why I like RPGs.

So far as I know, every Ninja Gaiden is ridiculously hard. I had a friend in highschool who was trying to beat NG:Black for Xbox on Master Ninja mode. He actually ended up causing some sort of trauma to his wrist and had to get one of those rolly-ball things that work out kinks like that.

But IWBTG might be the most impossible game ever

Interestingly, two of the hardest games (or RPGs at least) I can think of are Atlus games, that being Demon's Souls and Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. Both games are incredibly difficult but beatable on 'easy' difficulty, and rapidly spiral out of control, though admittedly I'm not a super hardcore gamer and, like BlitzSage, vastly prefer easy games.

I think I appreciate difficulty more when the difficulty is of the "sit down and sort out your strategy" kind rather than the "lightning reflexes" kind.

I don't appreciate insanely-hard platformers. But I do appreciate hard mode in RPGs.

Now, if you want a really hard--and possibly even unfair--game? Ghosts n Goblins for the NES.

Try playing "The Impossible Quiz 2" The very name should tell you what the difficulty level is. I got up to Question 16 of 200.

its a fun game, the game itself isnt spectacularly hard, its just a matter of finding and getting to the save points. there are a few instances of hair pulling, but overall a fun game.

I like that idea of supporting the independent game designers who make something new and different.

I try many games and have yet to try the rpg hack? or virus hack or something like that.

You're talking about Nethack.

If you think NG2 for the NES is the hardest game ever, you aren't used to playing hard games.

I am used to playing hard games, these games are extremely hard.

ninja gaiden 3 even has limited amount of continues and once all 5 are gone you have to start all over again.

ninja turtles is hard due to the jump timing to avoid falling into the water or some sort of trap one way or another and enemies who bounce around and are extremely hard to hit.

I've played hard games all my life, wether it be modern action games like metal gear solid 2 which i beat the second only on normal and some day i'l get back on it to max difficulty and games like ghost and goblins which is very very hard.

I heard of games that are harder but just because there are some harder games that take forever to master doesn't mean they are easy by themselves.

There are space shooters that i heard that could take days or something to master the pattern.

I don't believe weeks,but a few days maybe.

If you can manage this (especially the arcade version, but I'm guessing the NES version is just as difficult?) you deserve a cookie. I played through it in college using save states and I STILL thought it was too hard.

NG hardest game ever, BAH

I've played all of them. NG, NG:B, NG:SB, NG2, NG2:S

They can get frusterating (ALMA!)

But in the end, if you just get the feel of a couple of your favorite weapons, then you can fly through, my favorites being Vigoorian Flails, and the scythe(NGII). Master Ninja is hard as hell, I know, but it's also supposed to be a super challenge, I still beat it...and my hardest moment is the last level and the first time you fight the werewolves...that pisses me off to no end.

Hardest game I played was DMC3 on it's hardest difficulty...I almost broke my XBOX.

Ghosts 'n Goblins, also one of my least favored games...because I wanted to tip the arcade machine over.

Any other challenging (non puzzle-based) games? Not super hard ones, but challenging ones?

DMC 3 is only on the PS2 and PC. No XBox version.

The hardest game I've ever played is probably either Shinobi for the PS2 or Contra: Hard Corps for the Sega Genesis. They're hard. Real hard. Trust me on this one.

I was thinking about the FPS' mentioned above, and I'm surprised nobody else is mentioning the difficulty of games like Goldeneye 64 on 00 Agent mode, or even Halo on legendary. Maybe they only seem hard to me because I don't have the right sort of patience for shooters- I've only ever beaten most of them on regular, although I beat Goldeneye 100% on Secret Agent... not so much 00 Agent.

Has anyone actually beaten this game honestly?

Or is Princess Prin-Prin still languishing in that castle after all these years?

I mean, I once saw a TAS and even there they got sick of it after one pass and declined to do the second pass.

Yup! I actually own the arcade game (the cabinet is sitting in my living room, like 5 feet away from where I'm typing this), and have beaten it on one credit once. ONCE. I have tried many times to do it again, but it is supremely difficult. But yea, it can definitely be done. The NES version is much, much easier than the arcade version, but still nothing to underestimate.

I have a really vast list of games that I find to be really hard. I think I posted a thread about it a few years ago, but in summary:

-7th Saga
-Actraiser 2
-The Adventures of Bayou Billy
-Bad Street Brawler
-Phalanx (on Funny difficulty)

Those 5 are the hardest I can think of at the moment. If you like hard games, prepare to be punished.

Ghosts N' Goblins is just nasty. I wouldn't really bother with it. Because it's a really difficult game, and I want to say from memory from reading from game magazine's that there is a nasty trick in it , during the end. I think the trick was that you have to play the game through twice, to free the princess....

In my experience, the hardest games I've played are Super Castlevania IV and Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts.

Castlevania IV isn't hard until the later stages of the game, but when it gets there, it gets HARD! Still haven't beat the game to this day.

Ghouls 'n Ghosts is even harder. I can't get past the second level. Period. It's just too damn hard for me. What is it? Two hits and you're done? TWO HITS!

Zelda II for the NES is hard too, but I don't think it even compares to Ghouls 'n Ghosts.

If you think super castlevania is hard, play castlevania 3 for the nes.

I swear, that game just flat out annoys me.

After you get the character who climbs walls, you go down the same staircase you came up from, but this time its a little harder now because you cannot dodge the stupid flying medusa heads when facing the opposite direction.

In order ot hit enemies in castlevania while on the stairs, you have to be facing the right direction and at the right altitude, otherwise you miss and get hit.
If you areon the stairs, you can just get hurt which is bad enough anyways but worse if you just get off the stairs to avoid another head only to get killed by one that is right at the stairway.

And having them bobbing up and down makes it even harder to hit at times and dodge.

For me,my arch nemesis of castlevania, are the STUPID HUNCHBACKS!!

God i hate them so much with a passion.

I am glad they don't make an appearance in castlevania 4 because they are literally a royal pain in the butt.

In castlevania 1 at the final level, you have 3 big bats who appeared in level 1 as a boss.

Since they take forever to kill and don't give you anything for your bloody bruises, its not worth attacking them and is better off to dodge them.

Many times you will find them quite hard to dodge and they will often push you into a hole.

If you thought that was bad,it gets worse.

Remember the stupidly hard level where you fight igor and his hunchback friend who throws things at you and flies around the room making it nearly impossible to hit him? that level is full of hunchbacks.

They make a comeback and this time the birds fly faster and spam drop hunchbacks constantly.

These guys jump around on the cogs and can even jump through walls upwards to get to you and push you off the platform making it too easy to die here.

This part can literally drive you insane due to those stupid monkeys if you don't have a stop watch because these guys will make your life miserable.

And in the next area, they continue to spam drop those hunchbacks until the area where you climb up the ladder to the final steps to dracula.

This final level is so hard its ridiculous.

The medusa heads with knights was pretty hard because you had a boss fight right after and might be stuck fighting a boss with the wrong item and low health.

Being forced to fight a boss fight in low health conditions with almost undodgeable attacks constantly being spammed means that luck and patience are 2 things you need to beat this game.

The Hardest Game Series I ever played was the Super Star Wars series. While ROTJ i got to the last level but couldn't win, with ANH and TESB i couldn't make it past level 2 or 3. Frustrating.

Reminds me of a game i saw.

I saw this video about hardest game ever and it was a japanese space shooter and this huge monster was shooting thousands upon thousands of shots per second and you had to find little nitches and hide and even then it was still possible to get hit.

It was classified as the hardest game ever made.

I have even heard of an entire level taking weeks to do in a space game video i saw once, but i forgot the name.

Truthfully,i like hard games but not when they are overkill.
