My top 5 FF games in ascending order (and I'm including sequels, prequels, spinoffs, etc. in addition to the main series here) are:

5. Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core (Zack is awesome.)

4. Final Fantasy 5 (I love the job system and the humor. It was lots of fun for me to play.)

3. Dissidia (What's not to love about the return of some of my favorite old school characters?)

2. Final Fantasy 4 (The first FF I ever played and the one that got me hooked on the series. Ah, nostalgia....)

1. Final Fantasy 6 (Bar none, the best game in the series! My favorite cast, my favorite story, my favorite setting, my favorite villain...I just love everything about it! wub.gif )

FF9 stands too too far above the others for me that I almost feel I should stop here.
Well and FF7 a close second.
FF8 FF4 and FF1 would probably be the other three anyway.

FFVI - I've always loved FF but this game let me know that I would admire this series forever. Beautiful music and a variety of lovable characters. Celes will always be my favorite FF character. And bonus points for pulling off an opera with no real voices!

FFVIII - While not seeming to be a fan favorite, I'm a sucker for the teenage behavior. I guess that was a big turnoff for people, but they just don't seem to get Squall and the other characters. He was lost and confused like we all are sometimes, and those critical scenes are often overlooked (ex, him and Ellone in the Garden library). Maybe it was because I picked the game up during a tough time in my life.

FFX - When I was younger I thought it was just fun to play but after a replay I realized how deep Tidus' narration went. He felt like a real person, actually all of them were pretty 3-D characters. Voiceacting was awkward, though but at least blitzball kept me there for hours on end.

FFXII - Not the best, but not the worst. The battle system was awesome cause you could make it what you wanted it to be. Want more interaction? Just set less gambits. And I adored Balthier.

FFVII - Again, not great, not bad. Interesting, but the characters never connected with me. I think that was my biggest problem with the game; the characters are a huge deal breaker for me when I'm playing games.

Hm... VI, Tactics, IV, IX, VII, in that order. Nice and concise...I mayhap could say something about each one but, c'mon, it's after midnight, no time to be waxing poetic about Delita.

Among the ones I've played, and in no particular order, V, VI, TA, III, and perhaps VII.

I've heard Tactics is really awesome, though, so that should bump VII off the list.

FFI : Cant complain about the original. I remember the day I bought it brand new on the NES (mowed lawns just to be able to buy it).

FFII : At first, I hated the game. The *advancement* system was really awkward and a pain ... but the more you play, the more fun it is and once the skills catch up to the characters, its a blast.

FFV : I absolutely love the class system. Instead of the basic 4-6 classes, you have about 20 options. Makes replay great.

FFVI : I think its the first FF game where I actually remembered all the characters names even months after the game was over cause each and every character has a memorable story.

FFVII : Can anyone really leave out FFVII in a top 5 list? I stayed up all night the night before it was released, stood in line at the mall to get mine and I still have my unofficial guide and the shirt (although the shirt has been worn so many times, Life2 cant fix it).

How could I forget IV in my initial post! Must have been the lack of sleep.

Replace III with IV. As for VII, hmm...perhaps III instead of VII.

I have to agree. The new school is when the series began its stride.

1. FFVI
2. FFVII
3. FFIX
4. FFIV
5. FFX

1. FFVI
2. FFVII
3. FFIX
4. FFIV
5. FFX

Thank god I'm not the only one who thinks that. smile.gif

As for my top five, I'd have to say:

5. XIII
4. VI
3. VII
2. Dissidia (Oh, why not? happy.gif )
1. I really have to say it's a tie between IX and X. They're both great in so many ways, story, characters, music, gameplay, and they both go about doing in it such different ways. They are truly my favorites, and I don't want to choose between either one.

In order of preference:

1. FF1 NES - The original is still the best!
2. FF Tactics PSX - Even though I haven't completed it yet.
3. FF5 SNES - The story is a little weak, but this was the point in the series when I thought the classic FF system was at its best (before the grids and other cruft of later games).
4. FF4 SNES - Great story!
5. FF3 NES - Technically the most advanced system of the classic NES FF games, but I can't rate it higher than the original.

I considered FF2 NES for its strong story and adventure, but the system is so broken that I can't really call it a favorite after all.

I see a good mix of classic fans and newer fans in these posts.

Smash Genesis: If I count Final Fantasy Adventure as a Final Fantasy game, then Dissidia definitely counts.

Sparerib1968: I'd say that FF3 NES is better than FF1 NES; FF1 NES had some rough interface aspects (such as the slowly- and noisily-opening/closing text box windows) that were fixed later.

1> I've changed my mind and I've made Final Fantasy IX my favourite Final Fantasy again. I just love the music, storyline and characters too much.

2 > Final Fantasy VI. Great in almost everything. It's the prefect Final Fantasy.

3> Final Fantasy VII. It's a old classic and it just holds so much memories.

4> Final Fantasy VIII. I love the characters in this game alot. Irvine's humor, Squall's struggle's, Rinoa's carefree personality, Selphie's craziness...

5>Final Fantasy IV. It's a wonderfully well- made Final Fantasy for it's time.

A topic for favorite FF's never gets old!

5. Final Fantasy IX

4. Final Fantasy VII

3. Final Fantasy VI

2. Final Fantasy VIII

1. Final Fantasy X

I'm definitely a new-schooler too, though I think we're getting to the point where the 'new school' is going to have to be called the 'middle school'. Either that or call the games after FFXI the 'post-new school'.

Smash Genesis, I'm interested that you put FFXIII in your top five. I think it's a fine game and all, but I think that's the first time I've seen someone say that.

My favorite FF's from least favorite to most favorite:

5. Final Fantasy IX - I still remember every one of the cutscenes and the characters, this game's ability system connected with me. And I really felt the ending made the game complete for me.

4. Final Fantasy X - Everything felt more alive and real. And the fictitious universe made sense to the point where it could be real. Nothing was really left unanswered, except for the last few seconds of the game.

3. Final Fantasy VII - This was my first completed FF (I've played and beaten them all except XII) and it was awesome, in retrospect I feel that the the story wasn't the strongest, but it was still awesome.

2. Final Fantasy VI - I actually recently played this one, and it grew on me quickly...VERY quickly. Fanatic's Tower was my only complaint to this game, and it's villain was my second favorite, only to Sephiroth/Jenova

1. Final Fantasy Tactics - This game...I can just play it over and over and over again and it never gets boring. Job systems, ability customization, specialty jobs, generic jobs, items, everything. And it's perfectly executed. The story was totally believable, and the characters were easily connected with. There was NO flaw with this game, except that it spawned FFT:Advanced, and War of the LIons, two annoying slow games.

Well, to that point, I think I'm more of a middle-schooler myself. I feel that the series' golden era was between FFIV and FFIX. In fact, if you add up all the Square games, it's really their perfect era.

Hm...You're right, I think we do have to come up with a better term eventually. I would say "PSX era" but I think that FFX is of the group with VII VIII and IX, whereas XII feels like a new era/style/whatever. Maybe "Late Sakaguchi"? And for what it's worth I would agree with BlitzSage as well, I would say that Square's 'golden era' when they put out smash after smash was from 1990-2000. Is that middle school?

Technically, they're all getting older, so eventually they will all be old school, lol. But VI and VII are in the middle of the series, since 13 games have been made. I guess the best way to describe them is the SNES-PSX era.

Well essentially 14 now. I was going to respond here, but I feel like we're kinda dragging this thread away from its original topic biggrin.gif So I made a new one here.

I was honestly torn between FF1 NES and FF1 Origins. I appreciate the convenience features and graphical upgrades, but the original experience is the one I can't forget.
It is a bit of a shock to return to the NES game after playing different FFs on many systems over the years. Makes you appreciate how much the game has progressed.

#1) Final Fantasy VI

This Final Fantasy game is just great in everything: Music, Characters/Character Depth, Gameplay, Villains/enemies, Story, Sidequests. The best villain in the series in Kefka. The music was also probably the best in the series. The characters each had a different special ability/style, which made each of them unique. Really fun dungeons, such as the Phantom Train, Cultists' Tower, Daryl's Tomb, among many others.

#2) Final Fantasy IV

Everything Final Fantasy VI had, but to a slightly lesser extent. Golbez was a great villain, up until the "turnaround" of course. The characters were all great. The final dungeon was probably my favorite of the series.

#3) Final Fantasy IX

I've only played through it once, but it got me hooked and I felt the game was just amazing. There might not've been a nice, large variety of characters like in FFIV or VI, but the characters they did have were good...maybe with the exception of Amarant and Quina. Kuja was a cool villain. I loved some of the tracks in this game, such as the town theme of Dali and the song Dagger sings throughout the game grew on me, even if all we were hearing was "La la la la..." It didn't need words. smile.gif

#4) Final Fantasy VII

The characters overall weren't as great as earlier FF games. The only ones I think really stood out were Cloud, Barret, Vincent and Aeris. While Sephiroth is overrated, he is still a great villain. Excellent story, along with gameplay.

#5) Final Fantasy XII

Yes, Final Fantasy XII. Now, the story sucked. It really did. Outside of Vaan and Penelo, the characters were good, but I don't think any of them particularly stood out as anything too special. The main villain sucked, as well. But, despite all that, the game was still really fun to play. Gameplay was great. Lots of sidequests and the hunt feature was simply amazing and probably saved the game. It's fun just trying to get 100% completion and if you don't (it can be really hard to do so), it gives you plenty of reason to replay the game.

So, that's my top five.

I've recently played Final Fantasy V for the first time. I liked it, but I think I'm going to have to play it once or twice more to really get a feel on it, as I usually need to do with games. I had to do this with FFVII. I guess FFIX was an exception to this. What I'm saying is, another playthrough or two and FFV could replace FFXII in my list.

As for the others I've played and why I didn't list them...Final Fantasy I, I've only played about halfway through before I stopped, which was because I had finally got FFIX shipped in to me and I couldn't wait to play that. I still have yet to return to FFI; Final Fantasy VIII...I liked it for a while, but I began to see that it kinda sucked. Played through maybe 2/3 of it before I quit; Final Fantasy XIII...sorry for any FFXIII fans here, but...this game is NOT a Final Fantasy! Outside of weapon names/magic names, ect and the whole HP thing, there is almost nothing about this game that is Final Fantasy.

Anyone here like FF legends 1?

I thought it was a pretty fun game and i return to it now and then.

Favorite FF in Order:

FFVI:I love the characters story etc,i consider it the best final fantasy game i have played.

FFIV:I love the story characters and gameplay.

It may be simple, but i grew up with this kind of game so for me simple is not an issue.

FFIX:i like steiner and how he messes up and becomes a joke
I think beattrix is a cool character and really badass without being stupid

FF1:I know its a really old game but i consider the first final fantasy a cult classic among old games.

Sure the graphics and story is simple, but i find the atmosphere of going through the volcano and avoiding dmg to be fun and i get a kick out of playing this game.

I in fact have played FF1 to death.

FF legends 1:I like the adventure and style of this game,it just seemed like a lot of fun and one of those games i can return to.

Story is simple lots of adventure music is decent gameplay is addicting and loads of monsters to become.

FFX:Even if i haven't beaten it,i like the characters in it.

I think in favor of replaying it,i might replay it again and beat it.

Its one of those games though that really requires a lot of dedication and i often leave a game and come back and then lose desire to play it.

Rpg games aren't meant for that kind of style of gameplay .

FF7 crisis core:This is the one game where i actually liked the music enough that i listen to it.

I'm a big rock fan and enjoy its music a lot.

FF8:These are the ones that start to become my least favorite starting with ff8.
It was too much like a movie with too many cutscenes and in truth,i like it less than ff7 but due to ff7's hype,i put this one above ff7.
FFXII revenant wings:I didn't care for the looks or feel of the character.
I didn't like vaan or penelope.
I didn't care for the gameplay at all either

FFXI:For an online game,i am unsure if the controls are good on console, but on a computer the controls were terrible.
And the music got on my nerves outside after a while
The graphics were fine as i don't care about them,i found the musical piece beautiful and quite enjoyable inside town and the classes themselves looked interesting.
FF7:same as above but i like it even less because i dislike the characters and found it hard to connect.

I really did not like cloud at all and i found that it was hard to hate sephiroth.
In truth,i found that he had way less build up than kefka.

The first time i beat ff7,i was confused by the jumps from the flashback to the flashback and i found the connection between characters to be weak in comparison to FFIV and ff9 and ff6 and even some characters in FF8.

The story itself is not bad at all,the problem lies with focus.

The music was alright in some areas and there was some pretty good pieces like:the boss theme and jenovas theme and even shinras theme with that beat that i find hard to forget.

In truth, the game would have been higher on the list of what i would say the best ones of all,but due to hype backlash it falls dead last because i am literally sick and tired of all the stupid fanboys who troll me on youtube for saying that my opinion is that its overrated.
