With the sequel of what is one of (if not the) best games in its genre set to release July 27th, I wanted to ask: Any fans of the StarCraft franchise still looming around here?

I've gotten the chance to play the beta for a bit and I've gotta say, the graphics are great and the gameplay is as interesting as ever. But the beta so far just has multiplayer standard ladder games, and I *really* can't wait to get my hands on the campaign and custom maps. And since they're releasing the campaign into three separate expansions, it must be one hell of a storyline. The new design of battle.net also looks really sweet. This blizzard fanboy will likely call in sick for a couple days to play the hell out of it smile.gif

Anyways, back to my question. Anybody else looking forward to it? Any thoughts on what you're looking forward to the most? Favorite race?

I'd really like to play the game just to see what happens in the story. I hope that the jump between the the original story and the new one will be as good as the jump between WarCraft II and III. Gameplay-wise, I must admit I'm not too amazed by trailers so far, but it's not put me off at all because I haven't even tried it yet.

However, I don't know if I can get it running or not. I looked at some released specs and it's not too bad, but not altogether promising either. If I can't play it then I probably won't be too disappointed; I'll just pick it up sometime in the future.

Favourite race? Terran all the way. They're the first race I enjoyed playing, then at intermediate level Zerg and Protoss were my favourites, and then when I wanted to branch my game out even further the only race that really let me do it was Terran. They're cheap, strong in packs, and have amazing firepower. Unlike the other races Terran work best if you build every single unit they have available, and that's a lot more fun than a core unit (Hydralisks) with some support units (Defilers) etc. I enjoyed the Protoss campaigns a lot more, however. Great story.

I've been looking forward to the release of this game for years. Starcraft is absolutely one of my favorite games to date, one that I've spent (and still spend!) an absurd amount of time playing.

I just recently was able to play the Beta and was immediately impressed by how quickly I was able to pick up where I left off in terms of how similar it runs to the original and how smooth the transitions are to the new units, tech and builds. I have to say, they certainly gave each race a ton of interesting abilities and units. Particularly, the Zerg banelings are going to prove to be a really interesting weapon. The new Queens seem infinitely more useful than their original Starcraft counterparts, too.

That being said, however, I've always been a Protoss player through and through. I feel as if the range and power of their cannons have been nerfed quite a bit, which greatly discourages the "wall-of-cannons" defense I've seen many players resort to (myself included.) The new Colossus unit is absolutely brutal.

I'm certainly looking forward to the campaign, but more so, I can't wait to drop hours and hours of sleepless nights battling against opponents across battle.net

Until it finally releases, I'll be playing the original in hopes to tide myself over.

I picked up the game at a midnight release last night. (The Collector's Edition, because it was the last one and I took it as a sign.) That being said, I've been playing the game on and off all day, fitting in as much of the campaign as I could before I completely resign myself to multiplayer madness.

So far, so good in terms of the campaign! I'm not particularly fond of some of the new faces, but overall the plot continues right from Brood War seamlessly.

If anyone is interested in playing, feel free to message me or come find in me CoNchat.

Picked it up yesterday as soon as my local gamestop opened (thought about getting the midnight release but then I wouldn't have slept at all and I needed to work and pack for my trip to Atlantic City this weekend). I've only played the campaign so far, but it is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO awesome! Can't wait to dive into multiplayer. If anyone else wants to chat it up, you can add me to your RealID friend list

Has anyone tried using the online matchmaking system yet? Is it matching you guys up with people of similar skill level? I was holding out on buying this but if the service is capable of matching me up with equally inept partners I can see myself having a really fun time playing on battle.net.

I absolutely love the match-making system. Your first five games are unranked and are used as a basis for your placement into a ranking. (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Plat., Diamond, etc.) Once you've been placed, you're also moved into 'divisions' of a hundred or so players, of equal ranking and approximately equal skill. When you play a quick match or any ranked match, you're placed with people in a similar ranking as you, unless you continuously win. For example, I won five games back to back so the match-maker placed me in a round against someone in the Gold tier ranking as a challenge.

The game also tells you the "odds" of your victory while loading into the round, as above a player's name you'll see "Favored" "Slightly Favored" or "Strongly Favored" to win, unless you're equally matched, where it will say "Equally Matched."

You're also given the option of a "practice" league when you first get into multiplayer, where you play against other novices on redesigned maps which have more minerals and bases "sealed" from enemies by destructible debris, offering more time for you to get a feel for what you're doing. After 50 rounds of this, you're forced into your five placement matches, however.

Most of the people I know have been placed in Bronze and don't find themselves losing all too often. I mean, there will be the occasional losing streak, or player who completely annihilates you, but all in all it's actually a much more reasonable system than what Starcraft and Brood War had going on.

Also very cool to mention, as a side, is that inside your "divisions" (The 100 or so players you're ranked with), you can climb the ladder and aim to be in the top 10. At the end of each season (apparently said to be a month per, but still no official word that I've found), a tournament style of play will be held between the top players per division, who will then go on to play the top players from other divisions and onward, until you have a champion for each ranking. This, of course, will probably only appeal to those of you who are hyper-competitive, but will be a lot of fun.

Well, you sold me on it. I'm downloading the game right now through Blizzard's (very very slow) download agent. After I make my SCII tag I'll post it up here. I doubt I would be a match for any of you, I haven't gotten any better at the first since I last played some of you guys (and I was easily the worst back then...).

Blizzard has really turned me into an achievement monkey. I've so far dedicated all of my time to playing the campaign and doing achievements for them before moving on to multiplayer. I haven't even played a custom map or even a 1v1 yet, but I likely will over the coming week.

That being said, the campaign is one heck of a ride, and I have loved every minute of it. Interesting ending, too. Can't wait for the next installment, although it won't be long before I devote 24/7 to full-on multiplayer mayhem!

Heh, exactly the same for me. I refuse to play multiplayer until I am satisfied with the campaign. I'm not going to even attempt it on Brutal - I could probably do it, but it would take me forever and I'm simply not interested. After that, I'll probably just play multiplayer for the rest of my life. What a great game.

I'm currently at 1130 points, which is higher than all but a small handful of my friends, including my boyfriend dry.gif

In the last few months I've been playing a lot of Starcraft, mostly with Dragon_Fire, Zero_Hawk, and malevolence. My computer, however, is from 2007, and of course I wanted to play SC2, so what did I do? I went out and spent $100 on more RAM and a fairly nice graphics card. Worth it, of course. Just got the RAM today, and when I install it I should be able to play SC2 effectively. Am I excited? You bet I am. (I'm not very good though)

well, i havent posted on this topic in a while (cause ive been playing the game and other things) and i have a few things to say about it...

I dislike it somewhat...

the campaign is just,... boring. completely boring. so bad that i almost quit playing it halfway through. it just doesnt have the interesting story or plot that SC or BW had. I was looking forward to this game for over 10 years and i feel disappointed.

multiplayer is good. its great actually. but the problem is with battle.net. what happened to chat rooms? what happened to a list of current games? wow. those 2 changes are horrible. mapmakers (if they can get around the shitty map editor which i see as an abomonation) are pretty much screwed. the maps are listed by popularity. therefore, people are going to play the more popular ones more often. and the guy who comes out with a map now, gets crapped on, because no matter how many people play it, there will always be the same number or more people playing the ones at the top of the list.

also, i was soo pumped about the units in campaign mode only to find out a lot of them arent in multiplayer. A LOT of them. whats up with this? whos idea was that?

anyway, im ranting. SC2:WoL is a great game dont get me wrong. but theres just too many things that bother me. way too many things.

oh and unless you have a monster of a computer, be prepared to experience some lag and choke while playing...
