I'm up to the part where Laguna is taking these guys to a bar or something, and I'm BORED. I feel like the game peaked when Liberi Fatali played. It's just turorial after tutorial, and the external events are almost entirely uninteresting. Should I continue playing?

I haven't played the game since it first came out, and there's a reason for that. I found the first disc to be fantastic, but everything beyond that felt like a chore. I finished it to say that I finished it, and I probably won't ever touch it again. Not worth it.

I did enjoy parts of it. The story between Squall and Rinoa gets pretty good eventually and there are some major set-piece story events that are worth playing, including a major battle. One of my favourite parts of the game is the end, featuring one of the best musics of the game (The Castle) and quite a fun little system that affects your fights. Also Omega Weapon is waiting to be fought. I remember the first time I played it the Laguna parts were really annoying, but they do improve, so don't worry if you're bored at this point, I was too. If anything, let the music carry you through this game, it has some of my favourite tracks of the series.

I rate VIII higher than X and XIII. It has a lot of negatives that stop it from being great, but it's good enough to warrant one playthrough at least IMO.

Hmm...yeah, the finale of each disc are pretty fantastic, though you have to slog through the rest of the discs to get to them, so it's a give and take...the final dungeon is actually one of my favourites in the series, with a nice atmosphere and a huge boss rush, something that Squeenix doesn't seem to put in their games anymore. It's not a BAD game, though there are certainly better. I used to be really hard on VIII and X, but since playing the post-Sakaguchi games I've realized they weren't as bad as I remembered, kind of like how The Beatles' Let it Be...Naked made me realize that, hey, maybe the original Let it Be isn't such a bad album after all...

FFVIII is second in my mind only to FFX, so I'm definitely a fan.

It does, in my opinion, get considerably better from the point you're at now. The game does force you to endure a whole lot of tutorials, but you're just about in the clear. There are a lot of great plot events that only begin to start happening in the second and third disc. In fact, when I replayed it earlier this year I realized that almost all of my memories of the game were from the second and third discs.

While a lot of people around here aren't big fans of some of the elements of the plot (which I still can't see how they were necessary to include in the first place), and I don't believe that there was much of any character work done outside of Squall and Rinoa's relationship, FFVIII really does plot events well, and by that I mean really exciting/awesome. The game also does a great job with its cinematics and how it builds up to the end of each disc. The final dungeon is also very nifty.

Aside from my bias, I would regardles suggest that you stick it out. You may really enjoy the remainder of the game. Even if you don't, I think it's certainly worth finishing. I'd take a bad PSX RPG over a current one any day.

VIII is one of my favorites, and yes, it *does* get better. Soon. IMHO, the ending of the first disc is great. The second disc in its entirety is kind of "meh", but then the third and fourth discs are great. So...it depends on if you want to stick it out.

You dare asking such thing here on CON? I may have joined recently, but I've been reading the threads for some years now and I know people here don't like that game.

Just kidding (or not that much anyway lol)!

FF VIII is my favorite Playstation FF of the series (that includes also the games from ps2 &3), and I remember the first disk to be boring, but things really get interesting from disc two and on. And yes, it has the best final dungeon of all, with a awesome music, puzzles that, if not hard, really add tho the atmosphere of the castle, and a interesting event regarding your abillities.

I'm actually playing through VIII again right now and I know what you mean when you say it's boring. The only saving grace within the first disc is Triple Triad, the rest of the gameplay/story is a little lame if you're playing it for the first time. The second time around you notice little details that make you go, "ohhhh that's what they meant!"

Yes, it gets better. The story gets good because it delves into the human psyche, especially Squall's. The rest of the characters are less developed which is a little sad because I like them. But stick with it, it's really not that bad of a game.

FFVIII was my first FF, and I enjoyed it completely. It isnt at the top on my FF's list, but is a fun game, although the junction system is oh so abuse-able.

Play through the first disc, then play through the rest while reading this website.
It makes FFVIII make sense.

Shouldn't one play through a game before they decide what actually went on?

Possible spoilers: highlight to view
Plus this theory is almost as weakly supported as the Rinoa=Ultemecia one. It seems that every weird character/event must mean that the whole thing is a dream, but its a fantasy game. It's not going to all make sense, as it is a different world! Plus, the rest of the game does not seem surreal enough to be a dream; it's not random enough. I could defend this much, much more but i am afraid of getting on too much of a tangent
