I prefer subbed, though I'll take dubbed when subbed isn't available...and you?

I take dubs. I prefer it since I'd like to actually see what's going on instead on having to read it. *shruges* Call me lazy.

Please, please,please,please, PLEASE do not get me started on the whole issue of bad dubbing. Unless the acting and plot is CLEARLY bad, (I'm talking just reading the lines with no emotion, plots making absolutely no sense etc. Not the "this doesn't sound like the japanese voice" or "They're not using the original japanese terms in the plot!" crap) I don't mind.

I don't go to Sailor Moon boards for this reason. Most fans want to kill all the american dubbed actors and whine about the poor dubbing job constantly. It's not gonna change anything, so there's no point in complaining. Just shut up and if you don't like it, don't watch it. *scoffs* Children...

I usually prefer subbed. The casting is usually better, as the voices are more accurately matched with the characters, and on many occasions it seems that the Japanese actors put more effort into their work. Naturally, I'm no rabid anime purist; I could watch a passable dub and enjoy just as much, and I couldn't really care less if they changed a few esoteric Japanese phrases. I only get a little irked when the dubbing is obviously thrown together poorly, particularly when the scripting is bad.

Of course, there are exceptions. The most notable for me is Cowboy Bebop, which I think is a shining example of a dub done perfectly. The casting is right-on (David Lucas nails the role of Spike) and the acting and script is fantastic. I really wish the companies would put as much effort into all their work as they did for Bebop, because I often prefer the dub to the sub. (Not to take anything away from Kouichi Yamadera and Megumi Hayashibara, who do a fine job in their own right.)

Wiser words are hard to say my friend. I like a sub, because I simply like the japanese voice. It makes me feel closer to the origenal product. Not to say that I am an anime commie, I have no problem watching the Adult Swim, I just like the tone of the voices. I also read fairly fast when interested so it only takes split seconds to catch what they say.

I usually watch subbed, when available. But certain dubbing actors in France are now legend, for dubbing almost all the voices of City Hunter for example, in a really hilarious way.
When it comes to movies, I always try to watch them in VOST, and anime are no exceptions. The only dubbed anime I enjoyed was Porco Rosso, with Jean Reno as Porco (just great, his voice was perfect for the part)

If it's a choice between a good dub and a good sub, I'll take the dub every time. Unfortunately, that often just isn't the case. SM's example of Cowboy Bebop is one where it is. I love the dub to bits.

At the end of the day, I don't really care if the voices don't sound Japanese. In many cases, I think having them that way takes away from the authenticity. I see it this way: Japanese viewers hear the voices in a language which they know and are used to, and I want to be able to do the same. I know quite a few people who just prefer the sub because of the certain way the voices sound, the rhythm and all, but if you're Japanese anyway, surely that holds no magical value, and was never meant to especially.

If I could understand Japanese and watch without subtitles, that'd be a different matter.

But as I say, if the Japanese VAs do their acting well, and the dub VAs don't, which is sadly too often the case, I'll take the sub.

it depends. most usually, i opt for the subtitled version. sometimes, however, there is no subtitled version of the anime i want to watch avalilble, so i take the original (one example being noir before it was stateside). i can most often understand enough to forgo needing subtitles, but in some anime (lain, flcl, other complex or fast-talking animes) i simply can't keep up.

95% of the time, I prefer the original subbed version. I think it's just because I like Japanese. Or it could be because I don't usually like the job that English VAs do. However, that may not be fair. I'm starting to wonder if the VAs have a lot of time to rehearse, or maybe they don't have a lot of time for each episode, therefore they only get one take?

Also, I really DON'T mean to brag, but reading subtitles is easy for me. I can just glance at them and know what's being said. Unfortunately, I can't do that when I'm reading a book..

I tend to like subbed better, as i like hearing the original emotion in the Japanese voices. Also, I like how I can sometimes pick out actual words and have a vague idea of what they mean ^-^

In some cases, I do like dubs better, but only in certain situations. For Ranma 1/2, I'll watch it dubbed or subbed (though I've heard that female Ranma's voice is horrid dubbed for the first season), for Record of Lodoss War, I like dubbed, and for Slayers, I've only heard dubbed. Also, for Tenchi Muyo, I tend to like it dubbed better.

Everything else, subbed. Though Cowboy Bebop is about even, dubbed.

I don't watch all that much anime, but I like it subbed because my first really good experience with anime was subbed. It was Excel Saga, and I think it would be hard-pressed to do Excel's voice when she goes into her rants...I can't even understand them since I don't speak Japanese and they still crack me up. If they could get a good actress to dub it, I'd probably watch it though.

Most of the time I like the dubbed better. Not because of VAs, or being too lazy to read, but because of the approach taken. Subs translate the words and sentences said. Dubs translate the meaning of what's said.
People complain about the way dubs are done, but the animes I like are usually done very well, like Cowboy Bebop, Inu Yasha, Trigun, and Yu Yu Hakusho.
I especially prefer the Yu Yu Hakusho dub (not the Toonami version) over many of the subs I run into, especially since what I mostly find are bad fansubs that mix up the names.

I always prefer subbed rather than dubbed. I'm not against dubbing, but I tend to avoid it, as it mostly doesn't turn out to be good (There are exceptions, I know! Don't pick on me! )

Mainly, it's because I want the original speech. No matter if it's in English, Japanese or Arabic, I think the original thing is the real product. The type of speech and language the authors really wanted in the anime.

In Sweden, we dub things very rarely, compared to for example Germany, where they dub almost any movie/series that come from another country. So we are very used with subtexts. I think that most Swedes prefer subs in front of dubs.

Another thing I dislike with dubbing is that the movements of the mouth often doesn't correspond with the words. This is not the case with animated films, though, but it's horrible to see Fresh Prince in Bel Air and hear the characters speak German, while their mouths don't move in the correct rhythm. NOTE: I have got nothing against the German language! I have relatives from German! Hehee! "Bitte, sind Sie nicht böse!".

Heh. For me, it generally depends on the anime. For the most part, I tend to prefer subbed, but I'll give both a chance. I'm always so ecstatic when I find a good dub, especially if I've already seen the subbed version, because then I can tell that they're doing a good job. Like, as so many have already mentioned, Cowboy Bebop. My first experience with the show was a sub of the first episode, and then later I saw it dubbed, and went, "Hey, cool!!"

The notable exception (at least, the one I can think of right now) is Ghost in the Shell. I liked the dub better, if for no other reason than that it seemed to have better lines. My favorite one is "Togusa, if you're still alive, get off your ass and arrest those garbagemen!", and that line doesn't exist in the Japanese version. Kusanagi Motoko seemed so much snarkier in the dub, which I liked.

I will refrain from ranting about sloppy dubs, except to say this: We have eyes. We can see that you're not making an effort. Give us some credit for intelligence, please.

I as well perfer Subed, How ever Super moogle was right at least for me.

I prefer having both, unless the re-dub is seriously awful (or the subs). Cowboy Bebop for example has different depths to each set of voices, though I'd probably need to understand Japanese before I could judge if they're both actually any good. Works for me, nonetheless.

I don't adjust well to hearing dubs after the original voice tracks (or vice-versa), though I tend to grow to like them.

I prefer dubs myself simply because I watch anime usually for the animation. I usually don't care or like any anime based on characters or story. They all tend to be the same to me. So I watch anime for good animation and I really don't wanna hafta bother looking at the bottom of the screen if I can help it.

My favorite dubs are ones where they were made with an obvious flip you to the original script and the people just went hell out doing whatever they liked. Samuria Pizza Cats would be a good example. That and truly gawd-awful dubbing like they had in the old days o anime. It's like watching an Ed Wood flick.

I agree with you on the SPC point, though. Sometimes dubbing is so off-the-wall, it's actually really good, as in the over-the-top humor of the Cats. To this day, the dubbed version of the SPC remains one of my favorite anime, and my "first love" when it comes to the genre. I've never seen the show subbed, and frankly, I don't particularly care to.

definatly subs for me. probably because i read so much when i was younger, i am able to read the subs in a flash and not miss any of the images. also, the few dub anime i have seen were really poorly done, and i havnt bothered with dub ever since.
