Dragon Quest IX comes out in 10 days (7/11/2010) in U.S. I'm wondering if anyone else is as excited as I am about it. I've had it pre-ordered since they announced the release date.
http://ds.ign.com/objects/849/849436.html Looks like Nintendo is really pushing the ads on it. They have had Seth Green make a commercial for it, along with pimping it out at Gamestop. I also read that Nintendo power gave it a 9.0. I can't wait. I've been waiting for it to make it to our shores since it was announced... 2 years? 3 years ago? Any other DQ fans in the house? -------------------- "And that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana-shaped” -Sir Bedevere the Wise |

I'm getting it day-of. Sadly, none of my RL friends play DQ so I'll have to solo the multiplayer maps.

I have this and love it.
But why, oh why, is it so hard to pick someone up in tag mode? ![]() -------------------- "When we think there's no hope left, we keep looking until we find some!" - Claire Farron |

Is it me? or do they take their sweet time to release the games?
They seem to take more time on the game itself than final fantasy series. -------------------- We are stardust. Our bodies are made from the guts of exploding stars. Neil Degrasse Tyson. |

Dragon Quest - 24 years, 9 main-series games, a bunch of spinoffs Final Fantasy - 23 years, 13 main-series games, more spinoffs than Dragon Quest I have been playing this game so much it's a little scary. I've been alchemising the hell out of everything so I'm underleveled (around level 23 or so at Upover), but my equipment is always better than what they sell at shops. I have been playing this game A LOT too. I've put some 15 hours in atleast this week. Got both Gladiator and Arminist right after Jack was rescued before I did anything else further in my game. Also changed a few chars classes and leveled them up for a bit. I'm now pursuing my 3rd Figg, but need to stop to try and get Ranger class quest done before moving any further.

Ooh, I'm on my third fygg as well! That's the one in Gleeba, right?

This game is getting fantastic reviews. I might try this sometime in the future, after I guy a couple of games I've been waiting on. It looks really good though.

From the way the game has directed me so far, it appears that it will be at Zere Rock. *shrug* Going to get the Ranger class first before I move any further, so we'll see. -------------------- "And that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana-shaped” -Sir Bedevere the Wise |

I just unlocked the Sage class. It's actually balanced this time around! Instead of being BETTER THAN A MAGE AND PRIEST PUT TOGETHER like in Dragon Warrior III, it's not as good at magic offense as the Mage and not as good at healing as a Priest. Now time to go level one up....

Gudness Grayshus, I have not been this obsessed with a game since my first week of playing Dissidia. Hell, this is moving into Disgaea territory. I have about 100 hours into this game, with 7 characters created. The only legacy boss I've defeated is Baramos, but I have him up to level 10. Anyone else out there enjoying the best handheld grindfest ever?

35ish hours for me. Damn this responsibility of work and family!
Have 6 figgs now, working on Batsureg now. Anyone else getting a kick out of all the puns within the game? Hey everyone, let's play a game of describe-your-team, shall we?
Main character - female thief / ranger / armamentalist that uses spears. Really important in fighting against Metals, since she packs Thunder Thrust, high deftness, and high agility. Backup buffer / healer that always moves first and mostly works as #2 damage dealer behind... Male warrior / martial artist / gladiator that uses axes. All offense, all the time. Massive attack stat. The only moves I ever use (or even need) are the normal attack, two or three of the axe specials, and Psych Up. No time for defense or magic. Has the best defense and HP in my group other than.... Female warrior / paladin / minstrel that uses fans. 100% tank. Combination of Breath Reversal, Mirror Shield, and Forbearance is ridiculous. It will crush any boss that doesn't score many critical hits by reflecting their multi-target attacks and soaking up all the damage from physical attacks. The linchpin of my team in boss battles, along with... Female priest / mage / sage that uses wands. 100% healing and support. I hardly ever cast attack magic - I spend all my magic user's time healing the tank, buffing the party, and debuffing bosses. The wand, priest, mage, and sage trees all give huge MP bonuses, so this character will have at least 150-200 MP even as a Warrior or Martial Artist. -------------------- |

Just got this title a couple weeks ago and love it so far! I see you mentioned your main character as a different class other than a minstrel, how do you change that? Although, maybe reading the manual will help... Meh. Whoever gets back to me first, I suppose!
But anyways, I like how the action in battle is very fast-paced, makes them actually enjoyable to be in, and not repetitive as they could be. Also, being able to duck past your foes is nice too! Does anyone have any friend codes or whatnot to share? I'd like to play this online! -------------------- Games on the Go Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy: Four Warriors of Light Baldur's Gate Too much to play, so little time! Greg |

Meh. Whoever gets back to me first, I suppose! Once you reach Alltrades Abbey (Shrine of Dharma in DW3 or in fan-translations) and finish the quest there, you can change any character's class. It's a good thing, too, since Minstrels suck - they have a combination of some former Hero, Priest, and Goof-Off skills and are generally inferior. Only good for farming Skill Points. -------------------- |

(not an April Fool)
I figured I'd just stick with a recent topic instead of unearthing some ancient DQ topic. DQ boss Yuuji Horii gives a small update on DQ X. It's still being made for the Wii, and will likely return to a system more similar to DQ VIII's. Since my favorite DQ games are ones without class systems (V and VIII), this pleases me. And it's official - when DQ X gets an official English release, that's when I'll buy a Wii. But absolutely not until then. -------------------- |

I did finally get to class change, though it didn't work quite how I thought - it's like starting a completely new character, as opposed to the stats and abilities stacking with what you already know, unless the classes use the same weapons. Kinda' lame, but not the end of the world.
Either way, it's a blasty-blast. As for DQX, having it on the Wii sounds like good times, though I've never played another rendition of Dragon Quest aside from the first and IX, I think. A lack of classes doesn't sound as fun, but then I'm assuming it means you have a set character party that occupies archetypal classes? Like FF6? If so, that's not so bad, and does offer genuine character development, instead of a bunch of nobodies following you around like in IX, or Icewind Dale on the PC. -------------------- Games on the Go Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy: Four Warriors of Light Baldur's Gate Too much to play, so little time! That's pretty much how it works. Dragon Quest games go two ways: either a class system that's similar to FF's but more cumbersome, or a small party (no more than 7 or 8 characters) that each have a set path of skills and spells available. If you've only played I and IX, I would recommend trying out DQ VIII on the PS2 or DQ IV, V, or VI on the DS - they give a pretty good slice of the series. My favorite DQ games are V and VIII, and the most popular DQ games in Japan are III (NES) and VIII.
And remember, while class changing in DQ IX is kind of like starting a new character, the game remembers your experience in all other classes. If you start out as a Warrior, get to level 30, switch to a Thief, get to level 20, and switch back to a Warrior, you'll be level 30 again. Even if you plan for your main character to only use a couple of classes and nothing else (just being hypothetical) it's a good idea to level up every character in all classes up to level 24 or so, just for farming skill points. By the end of the game, you can get from level 1 to level 24 in a few minutes and it gives you about 45-50 skill points. Really, what I want out of DQ X is to get monster recruitment back. Dragon Quest has done monster recruiting before Pokemon existed, and it was an extremely fun aspect of DQ V. DQ VIII's monster arena was okay, but not quite the same. I want my Slime Knight and Great Dragon back, dammit. This post has been edited by laszlow on 5th April 2011 22:03 -------------------- |
