Okay, this has been disputed for so long between me and mah mate.

Yuffie - What is the proper pronunciation of it?

Personally, I think Yuh-fee.

Another one that has recently cropped up is Beta.
Betta or Beeta?

I'm with Betta.

So anyway, get back to me on those Pronouncing thingies! THANKYA biggrin.gif

Yuu-fee and Bay-tuh. The first one because Japanese basically make every u into a long u, and the second one because I pronounce it like the Greek letter beta.

Mostly I pronounce things in a way that's easily said because I'm lazy, but also habit and my accent apply. I say Yuhfee and Betta as well.

There are quite a few variations in the game. For Tifa, I've heard Teefah a lot but I say Tiffa because I go along the same lines of Tiffany. I say Sephi-rith because it's much easier to say than forcing the 'roth' part, and Air-iss rather than Air-eez. Nibelheim is tricky, I go with Nibble-hime instead of Neeble-heem or whatever the alternatives are. Junon is Joon-in. Ifrit is If-ritt rather than the If-reet that Baltheir says in FFXII.

Yuffie - Yuh-fee
Tifa - Tee-fah
Beta - Is a real world word with variable pronunciations. Bay-ta seems more US, Beat-er seems to be the UK preference.
Junon - Younon
Chocobo - Chock-o-bo
Cloud - Ee-moh tongue.gif

As a semi-related note I regard Aeris/Aerith as first a Cetran name, and the second, now supposedly canon version, as the Midgarianized version of the name. Why they didn't decide to turn a minor translation goof into an allegory for how real names of "foreign" languages are Anglicised (Calum/Callum, Sean/Shaun), I don't know. I'm guessing they lack imagination these days or it somehow never occurred to them how funny it would be to have the is/ith debate actually be possible in the canon itself.

You-fee
Tiffa
Jew-non
Choke-uh-bow
Air-iss
Seff-roth

The only one of those I KNOW is wrong is Sephiroth, I'm to lazy to annunciate the I in the name. Because all of the early FF games didn't have voice acting and I didn't have any friends I could verbally talk to about the games, I always came up with my own pronunciations and as a result a lot of the ways I hear people pronounce them now sound so wrong to me. Like, certain people I know say Tee-dus instead of Tie-dus, which is SO wrong to me.

Okay, from what I've gathered it's Yuu-fee and... well, that's it. I'm glad other things have come into it.

Btw, you know "Typoon", the summon, was that a typo?

I'd assume so; he is Wind elemental.

Yeah, Typoon was a (slight) typo, Chupon's original name in Japan is Typhon, who was a Titan in Greek mythology. And Chupon and Typoon are quite obviously the same being.

Typhon (aka Typhoeus) was not exactly a Titan. It was a different child of Gaia that was her final retaliation against Zeus and his supporters, born after the Titans, the Cyclopes, the Hekatonkheires, or the Titanides. Mt. Etna is supposedly where Typhon is imprisoned. [/Greek myth annoying correction]

However, I always assumed that he was named after a typhoon rather than Typhon. Typhoon is a kind of tropical storm, which makes sense since Chupon/Typoon is wind-elemental. The mythological monster Typhon is some kind of fire/destruction abomination, and probably the most powerful monster in Greek myth. Don't believe what Clash of the Titans tells you - the Kraken isn't even Greek.

... Ah. I agree with you on the Typhoon name, seeing as he does show up as Wind on the Materia, although I've always seen him as a stronger Kjata.

Umm... What? That doesn't really show how you pronounce... I'm gonna guess Beta, but even so, I don't really see how you pronounce it. Bay ta? Please be more clear.

Im liking how people have started just omitting the 'Tifa' part before doing their pronounciation- makes it look like we're all just a bunch of nutters making grunting noises

Was very sad when i found out Yuffie was Yoo fee
