I weakly prefer dubs, personally.

Explanation:

I've seen, read, and done enough arguing in real life and on internet message boards and chat rooms about this issue, so I have some insight into how things work. Here are some interesting points of consideration:

* I'm an immersive watcher. I like feel like I can feel the setting and characters around me, for the best experience. This obviously doesn't apply to everyone, and I think that "immersion" people like me are more likely to prefer dubs, because the text on screen detracts from the immersion.

* My brain prefers sounds over text. I know that some sub-preferrers that I've talked to just prefer text, because their brains think in text rather than sound.

* Subs are usually far more justified if the work in question has lots of cultural cues, especially ones based in the language. Subs give the chance for translators to explain cultural details on screen, if nothing else. Interestingly, the animé series that I've watched tend to skew toward cultural neutrality. On the other hand, I notice that a lot of animé fans have a strong interest in Japanese culture, which I don't share.

* The shitty translation jobs of yesteryear are rare today. And voice talent in Japan is slightly better for the reason that there are more people in the industry (thus more voices and talents to choose from), and those studios good enough to hire top-flight talent are also more likely to get their productions dubbed in the U.S.--if you actually look at individual roles, the quality just depends on the particular role and voice person, and there really aren't any systematic factors making dubbed voices worse. (Okay, except possibly less funding in the industry, but that's slowly becoming less of a problem as well, as the industry becomes more mainstream in the U.S. and more mature in terms of market conditions.)

I actually prefer dubs. I'm a ridiculously fast reader, so subtitles would be a viable option if I actually liked the Japanese voice overs. I swear, it's like there are approximately six voice actors in the whole of Japan, and half of them aren't any good.

in my day of anime watching i have to vote subs all the way.

dubs take to long to make tamper to much with the original version.

i remember watching dragon ball z i always though freza was a girl till i talk to a friend of mine who correct me i was shocked and in my personal opinion subs are better cause they give more information that you could miss in dubs and a lot more original and graphic i don't wanna see scars BLOOD BLOOD BLOOD PRIMAL INSTINCT PEOPLE

Dubs if it's available. I prefer it.

If it isn't, then I'll watch subs. What really ticks me off is the fact that when I'm watching on Veoh or something (back when Veoh was awesome) and whenever I'd switch episodes, I would find an episode subbed by a different person. Which is okay, but then Soul become Soul-sama... it just really bothers me for some reason.

Then that means you cannot watch anything but English-speaking movies? And you can't watch all of the great silent films either?

I like to watch movies, anime and play games with the original voice work still attatched. I am very happy that SOTC had subs otherwise some cheezy voice acting would ruin an almost perfect game. I really have to go with subs on this one
