I just started playing it the other day. It seems alright so far, though it seems like they tried to stuff as much into the system as they could from SNES SoM and SD3. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing.

And yeah, I don't like the ring menu in SwoM. It's a lot better in SoM and SD3. It's just too many button presses to get where you need to in this one, like Items -> Special Items -> Another category... sort of thing. The SoM way was a LOT less hassle (and the SD3 way, except for organising items out of pigging storage).

Incidentally, for those who don't know about this game: it's the Western release of Shinyaku Seiken Densetsu, a remake of Seiken Densetsu/Final Fantasy Adventure/Mystic Quest (NOT FF Mystic Quest... they called FFA MQ in Europe, apparently. I know, I know.) A LOT of the mechanics have been changed though, apparently, and the story is somewhat different. General consensus is that this game occurs shortly before Seiken Densetsu 2/Secret of Mana. Shortly compared to unreleased-outside-Japan Seiken Densetsu 3, anyway, which is supposed to be 1000 years before either.

So sword of mana is good. Thats great. I really want that game. Hey ace, you should play SoM. It should be considered the model of all rpg's. The music, the battles, the characters, everything is perfect. I love that game.

Yes, play Secret of Mana if only to hear Gaia's Navel song and have it stuck in your head 'til doomsday.

If you like the game it might be worth seeking out Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3 for the SNES (if you can get them).

But never buy The Legend Of Mana for PS, it was appaling!

Dark Digger is right, Legend of Mana will ruin the whole series for you. A mana FYI, SD1 is FFA on the GB, Sword is the remake of that game. It's a very big remake, as they changed a LOT from the original title. The only thing they kept the same was the story, but they added a whole lot to that as well. SD2 is secret of mana, IMO the best game in the series. SD3 is SD3, the storyline was cool, but I thought the gameplay was too hack and slash compared to the other mana games. SD4 is legend of mana, but it's best to prented that game doesn't exist.

Sword of mana is really good. It's an incredable improvement of the original title. The only things I dont like about it are:
1) It's easy to wander around lost. I think I spent an hour wandering yelling "Where the heck is this stupid lake?!" Vistsing old lakes from the beginning of the game that weren't good enough to be the lake I needed.
2) Magic attacks are varried by the weapon you're equipping when you use them. The staff shoots a hming blast, the bow fires a spell ball in the same arc as the arrow, etc. Equpping different spirits just changes the color of the generic blast you fire. I miss the old mana spells, where each spirit had a unique attack (Like wind blast and Gem Missle)

IMO, Legend of Mana was the best I've played of the series (I've played FFA and played but not finished SoM, SD3, and SwoM (I'm currently working on this one). For the thing, the music and graphics were nothing short of fantastic. Yoko Shimomura has to be my favorite composer from Square, and the vibrant watercolor approach to each area was simply breathtaking. Visually and aurally, this game is a true work of art.

Where people get really pissy with this game is the lack of story. Basically, all you ever do is "random" quests for people you happen to meet with no underlying goal until the very end of the game. My opinion on this is "So what?" With all the history you learn about the world by doing the "inane" quests, I didn't really mind the "lack of purpose". Your purpose was to basically be an upright citizen of the world, and earn the Mana Goddess' blessing. The closest thing I would compare it to is an MMORPG that's not MMO. tongue.gif

Anywho, SwoM really owes a lot to LoM as far as anything not related to the actual quest goes. Hot House is basically LoM's characters' house, complete with Li'l Cactus, Smithy, and Orchard. Doing quests for people you meet is straight out of LoM, and Nikkolo is the exact same person in both games, sprite included. Many enemies from LoM (while also appearing in other Mana games) make appearances too, with most sprite functionalities intact. Professor Bomb at the armory is, well, Professor Bomb from LoM, who teaches you how to make Golems.

Anyway, good game (as was LoM, you ingrates!), definitely buy it.

Legend of Mana has some of best music you can hear on a CD.

The gameplay is great too, and the story is nice, but the music is what as it in my list of fave.
