It does what it says on the tin. What characters do you 'main' with? Maybe you have a variable, like I do: Cloud and Yuffie, but the second slot is always open for a different character (Cait Sith).

And what if you could choose someone else to be the character that's stuck there, like when

Does anyone actually like Cait Sith?

I typically use Cloud (for obvious reasons, but I list him because I would still use him if I had the option not to), Yuffie, and Cid. Barret sees the next most screen-time (and actually he does see quite a bit), Vincent the occasional action, and Tifa and Cait Sith are largely ignored. I'm one of those obsessive types, so I end up source-farming, and in the end the only real differences in the characters come down to limit breaks. In the end, I go with the characters with the best limit breaks.

(I suppose weaponry distinguishes them to a certain extent, but the only time I really take that into account is with Tifa, whose final weapon is easily the greatest abomination ever; I don't care for her limit break and her final weapon gimps her, so she sees almost zero time end-game.)

My favourite party is Cloud, Tifa and Red XIII, just because they are my favourite characters. However, I try to use everyone equally during the story. I keep Aeris/Aerith in my party for most of disk 1 (until I get all of her limit breaks).

Underwater Reactor

Cloud > Cid > Tifa

Rest of the game

Cloud > Tifa > Vincent ( if don't get Vincent Nanaki )

I avoid Barrett Yuffie and Cait Sith.

Cloud in the Frontline, Red is Front, Yuffie in back row.

I typically have cloud with healing magic and general support materia. yuffie with counter/4xCut/Deathblow/Mug/Morph whatever & Red with some type of materia mix like Counter-Ultima or Elemental attack & defense-Fire (so he can attack himself to heal).

I use Cid, Cloud, and Barret. I prefer limit breaks with multiple hits so i can maximize damage output.

i started out with cloud has always been a team player for ovious reason [SPOILER] i didn't like it when you changed leaders from cloud to tifa to cid i don't have a problem with cid its just annoying

i started with a balance of leveling where id get guys to certain levels then use others then [SPOILER]when i figured out cait sith was a spy i stop using him altogether

then at a certain point i just stop and started with getting limit breaks but my favorite team is cloud cid and vincet i thinks vincets great clouds and his ultima weapon rock and cid is a dragoon and dragons are sweeta;icous ecept the one in ffIX (my opinion) and i know that sweetalicous is not a word i though it was appropriate
