Though this is off-topic, what's with the weird weapon w/no Materia slots? Nail Bat, Rocket Punch, Work Glove, Umbrella, and Mop. Their pics in battle are cool and when you first get them they are powerful, but do they really have a purpose?

Yes, they have a purpose: Beating. They are the strongest physical weapons you can get for a long time. If you go with might over magic, they are invaluable (especially if you have armor with some slots in it to make up for it).
Anyway, I have retrieved an "All" materia from there. I dunno if I'd missed one or I got lucky, but that was probably the best thing I've gotten from the Village. -------------------- |

if your doing a no materia challenge then they are VERY useful but if you just want the enemies to die faster that is the route to go, its kinda like how your ultiamate weapons have no AP growth, yes thier slots but does that make them useless?

I never really used Materia except in certain occassions such as Cure and then I sold all my Spell Materia like Fire and Ice, Lightning and Quake when they were mastered. I just don't like using magic. Life, Restore and Heal are the only magic I pretty much kept. The only attack spells I ever used late in the game are Comet2 and Ultima.

It's a deff trade off, power for slots. I used the Nail Bat all the way through the Temple of the Ancients just putting the materia I needed on my armour.
I think the set of gag weapons is great, it's not the first time a game has done that. -------------------- The Arcana are the means by which ALL is revealed. |

Quote (trismegistus @ 21st March 2005 02:31) weird? WEIRD?!? how can you say that beating a BloatFloat with a mop is weird?? Well, Aeris's gag weapon is an umbrella- now that's weird right? (You can only win it in the Gold Saucer or excavate it outside the city of the Ancients) ... and yeah, I personally find it a bit funny that a baseball bat or an umbrella can do more damage than Cloud's original huge assed Buster Sword. -------------------- Get me off this Disciplinary Committee so I can play any FF except for FF8!!! |

The mop has some sort of symbolism in Japan, I believe. Something along the lines of hard work or labor, or something.

The Nail Bat has a purpose. Evil Wall is strong against magic attacks, so using the Nail Bat to defeat Evil Wall is a smart choice.

This weapons also have another purpose, they help you greatly against Lost Number. If you first hit Lost Number with magic and change him into his physical weak form, the Nail Bat and other similar weapons will deal massive damage making this optional boss fight a breeze. The effectiveness of this weapons is best when use them early on.

I assume you mean Demon's Gate. I may need to give the Nail Bat a go, since Demon's Gate held up my speed run I started about 2 years ago. Who can equip it? |

Yeah, Demon's Gate is the name, sorry is just that he is exactly like Final Fantasy 4's Evil Wall except he doesn't crush you to death, and there is also another similar boss fight in Final Fantasy 12's Dynast-king's Tomb. The Nail Bat belongs to Cloud. If you equip Cloud with that weapon, and equip your armor with Cover, Long Range and Counter Attack, and use Haste on him you'll beat Demon's Gate in no time. If you're interested, these weapons also have the benefit of an increased critical hit rate. Nail Bat, Rocket Punch, Work Glove, Superball, Trumpet Shell, and Silver Rifle all have a +4% chance, and the Umbrella and Mop have +5%.
If you're setting up a team to have a tank of any sort that doesn't need much materia then these weapons are ideal. Aside from the strategy that's already been said, if you're fighting the Demon's Gate it's also a good idea to give this character Chocobo Lure and Luck Plus to get more critical hits. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Possible spoilers: highlight to view I think you find a lot of them around that point of time, right? At least one or two. Or am I thinking of the ones that just give no growth?... There are weapons which give no growth, right? <Tonepoet's memory has been a bit fuzzy lately> And then of course there's the Watui Sidequest, where Yuffie steals all of your Materia, making the slots pointless. Yeah they're the ones with no growth and no slots, but lots of attack power and high crit chance.
I tend to use one or two per playthrough for a bit. They're equal to the other weapons you get around that time, trading off utility for high damage. Even after all these years I tend to load all my characters with materia, so they're not super useful to me, but I could see them shine in restricted games, like no green materia or something. -------------------- "If art doesn't risk upsetting expectations and challenging its audience, it can only stagnate." |

Ultimate Weapons do give no growth, but they have 8 Slots each, or in Aeris' case, 6. Umm, Lemme check CoN Okay, you get Hairpin from the secret passage in that Wutai house... As shown here. You get all the others from Temple of the Ancients, or in one case, Speed Square. And if you really want to, you can go and get them from Weapon Shop 3 in Junon in discs 2-3. -------------------- Does anyone actually like Cait Sith? |
