okay granted this new's article is about 2 years old, don't know if i've posted it here before. I found this mindlessly surfing the web one day. It's now about a year away from the date that it says the release will be. Now has anyone else heard about this article before or know anything outside of this? Here's the link: http://www.whattheyplay.com/blog/2008/09/3...CFQO2FQod3E_UZA Any new information on this would be appericated. No one can tell me if it's real or fake.

Hmm interesting, though it also notes that the wii had (which was talked about in the article) wasnt denied either. So speculation could still say that they might add a high def version, even though it's very very unlikely.

It has been pretty common for a second revision of a console to come out about halfway through its life span. Nintendo is particularly notorious for this having the infamous top loading NES; a compacted SNES; the Gameboy Pocket; the Gameboy Color; the Gameboy Advanced SP; the Nintendo DS-lite and the Nintendo DSi all being rather rudimentary modifications of an already existing system under their belt.
Because of both the precedent shown by the Gameboy Color and the fact that they can't really go much farther in their chosen field of interactive innovation at the moment, I really wouldn't be surprised to see a graphics enhanced version of the Wii. Especially because visual media seems to be definitively pushing towards making high definition screens the new gold standard, which will not reflect kindly on their current system's comparatively low-end graphical capabilities. That can be a good thing for Nintendo though, because they've given themselves plenty of leeway to improve in this direction come the next console cycle, where as bleeding edge Sony and Microsoft might find themselves at a dead end with their users seeing no reason to upgrade to the next nearly identical system. If my theory is correct, Nintendo will probably wait until the current console cycle is over and try to pass it off as something completely new though. That could take as long as 2014, since I heard the current generation was projected to be twice as long as the prior average of four years. I also don't see what more they can do to actually improve the system they have already, since it's already a teeny tiny little thing. Perhaps they could throw a Blu-ray player in there to add functionality to the system, in the same way they've added functionality to the DSi but I'm not sure if it's really feasible or desirable for them to do so. I'd say a price drop, a-la 99 dollar Gamecubes is much more likely. This post has been edited by Tonepoet on 31st January 2010 05:47 -------------------- |

A big part of the reason Nintendo has had the success it's had with the Wii with its target audience is the low price. Adding HD won't do that any favours at all - they'd need new video hardware at the very least, and they'd probably need to keep the old hardware too to be backward compatible with existing Wii and GameCube titles.
The GBC is no comparison - that came out some nine years after the original, by which time the original hardware was obsolete and could be replicated quite easily with those additional features, for less money than it would have taken to build the original. So I don't expect to see an HD graphics Wii until the "proper" next generation. There might be minor upgrades - I wouldn't be particularly surprised to see one with an HD upscaler built in (which is quite different from native HD graphics generation). I would frankly be amazed to see Blu-Ray support considering there isn't even support for playing DVDs in the original's DVD drive. But I wouldn't be surprised if there's no upgrade either - the MotionPlus, Classic Controller Pro and black version of the console probably already constitute the mid-life hardware update. |
