It depends largely on what the event is for and what kind of friends you have. Is it a new years party? A birthday? How many people are you planning on having? Six, ten, twenty or more? Also, just how much effort are you willing to put into the theme? What kinda budget do you have planned? What's the average age group? How much time do you have to prepare? Sorry if this is a bit stressful for ya, but I really believe we need a little more information to give an intelligent answer. That's just my personal opinion though.
Just to make this post not totally unhelpful, considering the site we're on, I don't believe it would be long before somebody suggested video game or Final Fantasy themed parties. You could probably make little sword and axe cutouts styled after NES Final Fantasy box and have various items like round jelly treats to look like materia. Two of them could go on a Buster Sword shaped cake. I've seen official cosplay costumes that Square sells which you could probably order online if you're willing to put aside a little changing area for your guests, and if they wouldn't be too embarrassed or you guys could probably make your own using stuff lying around the house. For music you could buy some O.S.T. albums, piano pieces or perhaps something from The Black Mages from iTunes dependent on your tastes to match your intended mood. If you just so happen to have these items lying around or happen to be fortunate enough to be able to rush order them, perhaps various plush toys and figurines could be set out for decoration and perhaps you could set out a PS2 so they could play any game from VII~X-2 maybe? If not, you could probably improvise very easily. There are a lot of directions you could go with it really, although I'd have to admit it's a tad on the nerdier side of things. I'm really only suggesting it because of where we are and the aforementioned lack of other general information. To its benefit, it'd be a rather interesting and unique way to simply just goof off in a casual atmosphere though and since Final Fantasy is such a long running game series, there are a ton of characters and items to draw inspiration from so I'm sure you could figure out something. It's very, very, very dependent on exactly why and who with you're having the event though. Welcome to the Caves of Narshe by the way, I really do hope you enjoy your stay and find our input on this matter at the very least insightful, if not all too helpful.
