Guys, I want to rip a three minute clip from an AVI/full length movie I have. Can someone recommend a free software that does this?

Virtualdub. that's what I use.

VirtualDub is probably your best bet. It's what we use for all our CoN videos, too.

In theory, you should be able to crop and splice out the segment you want with any standard video editing device. Windows Movie Maker, although crude, would suffice to get the job done. If you're running on a Mac, iMovie would do the trick.
It's as simple as importing the file to the program, dragging it onto the time-line, cropping the section you want to cut and then pasting it to a new, seperate time-line. If you're looking for slightly more robust video editing programs that still fall under the "free-to-use" category, I'd suggest you check out either WAX, VirtualDub or Avid FreeDV. There are also trial versions of Sony Vegas, Adobe After Effects / Elements that might do the trick, though they might leave a watermark or will only offer saving files in a particular size, of a specific format native to the program. Hmm, well it seems a bit more complex than I can handle, as I'm really new to all this. I had trouble running it at first and when I finally got it going it told me I can't upload the video because I don't have the right codecs, which is what windows movie maker told me. I have all the codecs to play the movies Ihave. What's the difference? I don't really get how I don't have the proper codecs..
I even tried codec packs that have ever one I can think of and still no bueno. -------------------- Climhazzard is the timeless evil robot who runs some of the cool stuff at CoN (mostly logging chat, since there are no quizzes at the moment), all the while watching and waiting for his moment to take over the world. -Tiddles |

Not sure where the upload is supposed to go or why that won't work based just on that. Do you know what codec specifically was used to make the movie in the first place? -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

I'm just trying to put it into Windows Movie Maker or Virtualdub and neither will take it. They just tell me I don't have the proper codec to load the movie into the editing sofware.
Quote The file C:\Documents and Settings\Samurai Blur\My Documents\Downloads\Akira.1988.DVDRip.DivX.english.dubbed.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again. So, what I'm trying to say is, I can play the movie with GOM or VLC or whatever, so I know I have the right codec to view it, but when it comes to putting it in the editing program, it doesn't take it. Well, my next thought would be to install something like http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ and see if it can tell you exactly what codec it thinks you're missing. I don't really know much beyond that I can tell you at the moment, I'm not sure I've worked with many videos that I didn't also author myself, or weren't compressed with any codec at all.
Edit And I helped Mike! This post has been edited by Rangers51 on 11th December 2009 02:13 -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |
