Which musics do you listen to when revising or working in general?

I try to avoid lyrics at all costs. Last exam I had I went in with the entire O Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack in my head and couldn't remember half the case names or anything interesting to write about. Luckily it was a practice. 'In the big rock candy mountain / the jails are made of tin / and you can walk right out again / as soon as you are in.'

Right now I'm enjoying the Unreal Tournament '99 music courtesy of a playlist on YouTube. It's pacey enough but without being too demanding.

I normally can't listen to anything when I am working, but sometimes I will listen to some classical music that I have. But most of the time, I can't concentrate with noise.

My working soundtrack usually depends on what I'm doing, and where I'm at musically at the time.

For example, this month (Nov) I participated in Nanowrimo(NationalNovelWritingMonth), and I ended up listening to the Flaming Lips almost nonstop- mostly The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi

Last year, when I wrote all I listened to was the NPR classical station.

Typically, I like the Classical though, if I had to have a preference (that was in no way binding, note).

I'm the same way with lyrics mostly, but sometimes I'll play music with them even when working. I mostly listen to ambient or post rock when I'm working though, especially Eluvium. Just really, slow, smooth music. Other bands fall into that category too, like Hammock, and certain Sigur Ros songs (pretty much everything off of () is good).

I tend to go through phases when it comes to music I listen to while working.
Albums I listen to more than others include Parachutes by Coldplay, John Henry, Apollo 18, Flood, The Spine, and The Else by They Might Be Giants, 52nd Street by Billy Joel, Animals by Pink Floyd, Goodbye, My 4-Track by Logan Whitehurst & The Junior Science Club, Momofuku by Elvis Costello & The Imposters, Accelerate by R.E.M. (generally when I need to get whatever it is done rather quickly), Remain In Light by Talking Heads, It's All In Your Head by Eve 6, the soundtrack to Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, etc.

I also have several playlists of songs without lyrics - these consist of artists like Mozart, Ravel, Peter Frampton, Edmund Welles (a bass clarinet quartet from California - look up their covers of Radiohead's "Creep" or Spinal Tap's "Big Bottom"), etc, plus some video game soundtracks - Mega Man 2, Final Fantasy VI, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Golden Sun, and so on, as well as a bunch of songs from OCRemix.

I find that I can't work with music playing in the background. That said, I get myself in the mood by surfing the internets, checking into CoN, and listening to music. I listen mostly to acoustic, folk/indie stuff.

I usually put my music library on shuffle with Windows, but eventually that gets distracting (97% is metal). So if I really need to concentrate I use the Fullmetal Alchemist and different Final Fantasy soundtracks, particularly XII. Soothing neoclassical is the way to go.
