Yup, that news surfaced about a month or so ago. It's funny, because they were denying it as recently as a few weeks before that announcement.

The comercials were kinda crazy... from anyone who has already played the game, is it any fun? Is there any plot, or is it just another generic shooting game?

The point of the game *is* the plot, not the shooting. In fact, the shooting is pretty lackluster.
Still, it's one of the best games of 2007, by far. The audio work alone makes it worth the price of admission. -------------------- With the lights out It's less dangerous |

This is an old game now, two years for the 360 and a year or more for the PS3, but I picked it up for $20 on Amazon because I kept hearing good things about it, and just recently beat it. Now, generally speaking, I'm not a fan of the FPS genre but...wow.
People talk about how good the story is, but to me it's not necessarily the story, a gene splicing sci-fi plot that is reworked from things that have been done before. What really gets me though is the atmosphere, the way the game immerses you in this underwater Ayn Rand dystopia. Everything from the post-War decour and music made me think, "this place was probably once beautiful" just as one of the characters said those very words, "it's hard to imagine, but this place used to be beautiful." Too bad it is now populated by mutants, and zombie children protected by monsters in diving suits they call "Mr. Bubbles." Hahaha.... The gameplay itself is also fun. Superpowers and guns have been mixed before, but Bioshock does it very well. The whole package reminds me of good Resident Evil and Doom games. Not sure I would have picked it up when it was brand new, but for $20 it was a steal. Looking forward to being a Big Daddy in the sequel. Your story is more or less how I got it, too, though - I found it on a Black Friday sale for $20 last year, just hours after I actually got a 360. I've played it almost five hours since then! The atmosphere is everything I expected, and I love that aspect of the game (particularly in HD!), but the actual game play, well, I'll just never be a console FPS guy, I guess. I still look forward to finishing it once I finish dominating my new used copy of FIFA 09, though. I've been playing this a little recently. I bought it about a year ago I think, for the Xbox.
There's definitely some failings in the gameplay, I agree R51. To me it's one of the very rare games which you get more out of if you play it on Easy. If you're constantly changing between weapons and trying to run from security bots etc. you don't appreciate the surroundings or the enemies as much; well, in my experience anyway. Like I wrote in the 'bad gamers' thread, BioShock has so many frightening set-pieces that lowering the difficulty doesn't detract from the atmosphere either. I think the beginning is very cleverly executed. I particular liked the way that Ryan talks about his utopian vision where everyone will live and work towards their own success, and then you can read the discarded placards from the protesters saying 'You don't own us Ryan' and 'Let us leave' or something else along those lines. It's brilliant. The story is a little bit weak at first, although I liked Atlas straight away, but it does get much better. About mid-way through the ball starts to roll a lot faster. They seem to save all the best ideas 'til last. I suppose it's good to settle the player into the world at first without overloading them with too much information. There's still something about it that makes it difficult to just pick up and play. I had a great time playing through and completing it, but even then there were bits where I just didn't want to fight through another bloody splicer, Big Daddy and machine gun turret room. More variety would've been nice. Having said that, and without spoiling anything, there is actually a big change which happens nearish to the end, and that was a lot of fun. So, yeah, I really like it, but in terms of putting players in a whole new world and then giving us lots to explore and discover, Half-Life 2 beats BioShock into first place. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Well, not to take this too far off topic, but I didn't realize AmaCoN could apply universally to all Amazon purchases, I thought it was just select titles that you decided to advertise. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I have no problem throwing a percentage of my Amazon purchases in CoN's direction. I have never played Half Life 2 but it sounds interesting from what you two said. I think the next "under budget because it's so old" survival horror FPS game I want to pick up is Dead Space. |

So I know this is a double post, but since I'm talking about something different a bump seemed more appropriate than an edit.
Following up on my last post, I did end up getting Dead Space. It's a great game with some unique elements like Zero G environments but I have to say that, as far as the storytelling mechanics go, it is Bioshock in space. In fact, I'm starting to see Bioshock influence in many games now that I've played through it, even Batman: Arkham Asylum. It's not so much the gameplay as it is the way in which the story is told, through exploring a sick and decayed setting full of various levels, with audio tapes and more subtle things like posters on the wall explaining various aspects of the location's past, while people communicate with you remotely and announcements are made periodically over a loudspeaker by a recorded voice. Game definitely gets more props from me in terms of its storytelling mechanism being influential, if nothing else. |

I forgot to mention something last time this thread surfaced, one thing I still don't understand is why BioShock is frequently called steampunk. The main character has absolutely nothing to do with the punk genre, he's just a quiet guy who gets roped into other people's plans. A true punk would do things a lot more his way rather than following orders.
I'd like to play Dead Space at some point. It sounds pretty good. To be honest, there are masses of PC games which have done this already, such as System Shock and Deus Ex. Hey even Gears of War 2 couldn't resist doing it; there are notes and magazines to read throughout the game. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. It's quite possible that you're right, and Bioshock didn't invent this particular mode of storytelling. However, I give them credit for popularizing it. Bioshock was fun, but in terms of gameplay I didn't find it particularly innovative, but I am increasingly aware of how well the story mechanic worked and has been copied. Also, I have to point out that System Shock was designed by pretty much the same writer and development team.
Dead Space is a great game, I would recommend picking it up. If you are a space enthusiast and sci-fi nut like myself (and I remember you mentioning something about space law) then that makes it all the more interesting. |
