For some reason, I was just hit by nostalgia this weekend. My cousin came over, and we played through the DKC Trilogy, which was cool. And then I brought out pokemon. He's still into that stuff and so am I, and I think that's cool, but that's another discussion.
When I pulled out Silver, I saw my old team, and that reminded me, this year is my tenth anniversary of pokemon. I got Pokemon Blue the Christmas of '98, and I played it all day though I was sick. So '99 was pretty much the year that I played and beat the game. I remember my neighbors got me into it, and then suddenly everybody was trading the cards in school. But I remember Pokemon sticking with me long after everybody else stopped playing it. But that's not the strangest thing, it's not only the tenth anniversary of me buying the game. It's the tenth anniversary of the team I started on Blue! Yeah, once I beat the game, I never started a new game, until I got Silver and transferred my team over. I don't know if anybody else has done that, but I'd love to know if you did, because I want to know if I'm crazy or not, lol. But anyways, this made me want to start a Pokemon thread, if that's okay. Tell about your old teams and your memories of playing the games. I think, other than FFVI and DKC, Pokemon Blue and Silver are my favorite games of all time. Oh, I forgot to tell you my pokemon team Blastoise Snorlax Pidgeot named Flaps Aerodactyl Haunter named Scary! Gengar named ScaryJr! and Typhlosion in Silver This post has been edited by BlitzSage on 19th October 2009 22:41 -------------------- |

I've always been a fan of Pokemon, but I didn't start playing the games until Fire Red came out. Now I'm working on getting a full Pokedex in Pearl.
My current party is: Napoleon I (Empoleon) Akupara (Torterra) Goku (Infernape) Tartarus (Tyranitar) Leo (Luxray) Draco (Salamance) At some point, I might replace Goku with a Blaziken (named Blaze) and Draco with a Dragonite (Dragon, or Draco again). -------------------- "My name is Atma...I am a power both ancient and unrivaled... I haven't played any of the games past Silver, so I don't know many of the new pokemon. But I plan on getting one of the Gen. IV games, and maybe SoulSilver when it comes out, I'm not sure though. But anyways, how strong is your team?

That depends on what you mean by strength. By level, they are all 65 except for Salamance, who is level 60. As for movesets, I prefer damage-dealing moves over status-change moves. As such, they all have damaging moves that complement their types, as well as something to make them a little more versatile.

Favourite Pokemon game would be Yellow, or Crystal, they're epic =)
I had a level 100 Espeon in one game of Crystal. Best game ever XD I definately like the older games more than the new generations. I dont know, just something about them. -------------------- *Sigh*....Times are tough |

The older games were simpler and hold a bit of nostalgia, but the new games offer a wide diversity that gives players the ability to create many diffferent parties. I kind of like seeing the diffferent pokemon people use to accomplish the same goals.

I love Pokemon. Back when I had the time to do so, I used to play it really often, breeding all kinds of pokemon to get the right natures, IVs, etc and constantly thinking of new builds to try. I think I raised something like 50 pokemon from eggs to the highest level they needed to learn all the moves, all EV trained and specially bred with the right nature and IVs. Luckily, back when I had the time I made a team of 6 that I like, because now I only play when I want to battle other people online. Some members here have battled me while my team was still in the works, but now it is finally complete and I am finally happy with everybody. There is one pokemon I may replace at some point, but for now it works well. I guess I forgot to mention, but this is Pokemon Pearl.
As for the new games, I bought Pokemon Platinum so I could use the great new move tutors (ice punch!), but I haven't really gotten into it much. It's tough for me to find motivation to raise new pokemon when I am completely satisfied with the 6 that I use now. I highly doubt I'll get HG or SS. The next one I buy will likely be the fifth gen game when it comes out, assuming it's not for DSi. Like many others though, I love Pokemon for the hugely diverse amount of strategy that people employ when they battle. There are 493 different pokemon, most of which can have multiple potential builds (sometimes 4-5 different movesets, items, natures, stat distribution, etc), so trying to predict what build your opponent is using or what it might do becomes really, really complicated and interesting. I love it. -------------------- Is PJ |

Quote (THE_MAN @ 21st October 2009 02:51) That depends on what you mean by strength. By level, they are all 65 except for Salamance, who is level 60. As for movesets, I prefer damage-dealing moves over status-change moves. As such, they all have damaging moves that complement their types, as well as something to make them a little more versatile. Me too. But when I play Stadium, it's a lot about strategy and status affects. A good combo I have seen is Confuse Ray, Toxic, and Screech. That is a killer in the old games (maybe in the new ones too). First, confuse them so they hurt themselves and poison them, and then lower their defense. But nonetheless I'm like you. Like I said in the other topic, I normally over-level, so it's all about power anyways. The thing I do in Silver is to give them strong moves and then give them Leftovers (because I also like health regens). I actually trained my team all the way up to level 100 in Blue, and then switched them over to Silver. I believe I also trained Mewtwo up to 100, but I didn't use him as much after I trained up Typhlosion. Quote Favourite Pokemon game would be Yellow, or Crystal, they're epic =) I had a level 100 Espeon in one game of Crystal. Best game ever XD I definately like the older games more than the new generations. I dont know, just something about them. My cousin loves Eevee, he has one named Buddy that's level 100. But yeah, I have to agree. From what I've seen, I'm sure that I'll like the older ones better, though I still am going to get a Gen. IV game. I honestly think it is the simplicity of it. Fewer pokemon, and for some reason, though I played Silver, and have seen my cousin play the other games, I still feel the first 151 pokemon are the best. I think it was just the style of them, the way they look. And I think I was very lucky the way my team came out. The pokemon I wound up having are still my favorites. Obviously, there is the nostalgia part, but I have also spent years coming up with a fanfic about myself as a trainer, and the team I mentioned above (which is why I haven't been able to end that game still). Because I have my own story worked out, combining the games with the anime. But I do think that I'll enjoy playing the newer ones, because of the change in technology, and the vast number of new pokemon. Plus, I've been away from pokemon for so long, I barely even know the pokemon in Gen. II! And since I love it so much, I feel like I've got to get back to it. But anyways, the main reason I opened this topic, was to ask you why you like pokemon to much. For me, obviously it's a great adventure story, but there's another thing to it that I like also. Because the goal of the game is to train a team and become the pokemon champion, it's like a fantasy sport. It's like football, except with giant turtles battling dragons, lol! I think it's that RPG-like sense of a journey mixed in with that competitiveness that watching real world sports offers. -------------------- |

I think the reason I love Pokemon so much now, is because when I was younger it was pretty much the first game aside from Kirby that I ever played, and I was like blown away by it. These days its just too cool. I can't even explain it xD
I'm planning on getting HeartGold and Soul Silver the second they come out. Pretty psyched. But yeah, with the new games, I just don't get that awesome feeling. The Pokemon seem so generic and wierd and I can't stand those competition things. =) ah well. -------------------- *Sigh*....Times are tough |

Not sure whether I'm getting HeartGold or SoulSilver yet, but I will get at least one.
![]() In response to the initial question tho, I got to 151 on my original pokedex, but that was after we figured out how to "splice" pokemons during trades. For the newer crew: it was set up in the original games (red, blue, and yellow) that trades could be done via gameboy link cables, and when the transfer animation was done, the games no longer communicated with each other, and would complete the transaction disconnected. The final part of the transaction is saving the changes to the pokemon lineup (i.e. - replacing the pokemon that was traded with the incoming pokemon). If done properly, you could trade some uber or one-of-a-kind pokemon to someone for a garbage pokemon (like a freshly caught lv2 Pidgey or something that didn't matter), confirm the trade, and let the game that is receiving the "good" pokemon complete a proper save process, but SHUT OFF THE GAMEBOY of the "garbage" trade, which would revert the game to right before the transaction was made, as all pokemon games save before you enter a trade room. So what you ended up with is a game that has a newly traded pokemon on it, and a game that starts from a save point of before the pokemon was traded... effectively "splicing" one pokemon into two via a transfer. This tactic spread a single Mew through my school like wildfire, and made getting multiple Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres much easier. The one pokemon I refused to take a spliced copy of, however, was my Mewtwos. After I had purchased Pokemon Stadium, I started backing up all my pokemon to the cartridge, and since there was no restriction on which game could re-collect the pokemon back off the cart, I would often restart after dumping my entire pokemon stockpile and resending epic starter combos. I played through SIX TIMES IN A ROW just to collect 6 independently different Mewtwos, with different Trainer numbers and everything. So my final R/B/Y team... which was UNSTOPPABLE btw... consisted of: Mewtwo-X Mewtwo-Y Mewtwo-Z Mewtwo-A Mewtwo-B Mewtwo-C All of which were leveled to 100, Mewtwo-X got to lvl 98 naturally, but Y,Z,A,B, and C were Rare Candy-ed. They all knew ThunderBolt, Ice Beam, Psychic, and Recover. Epic pwnage and stat damage for those games. Then Silver and Gold came out, and I was beat up by a Houndoom... That's when I quit playing for about 5 years. ![]() I got back in with LeafGreen, and played like I was a kid all over again, and when Diamond and Pearl came out, I was on the wagon immediately. My Platinum game is my "Where-it's-at" game right now, however, I refuse to hack or cheat in any way, so things have gone MUCH slower... especially since I used my Master Ball on Giratina in the first encounter, as I didn't realize I would have another opportunity to catch him later. ![]() I'm building my Catch-Team at the moment, basing it off of a Speed EV trained Zapdos that knows ThunderWave, and a Speed and Attack EV trained Scyther that knows Feint Attack. I still have Mesprit, Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres to catch in the wild, and my Poke-Mans could level a bit more to ensure a speed advantage (nobody can touch the Articuno yet... Yay for good speed IV! I'm gonna use that fool when I finally catch him! ![]() -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! So you rare candy'd? I think I did that for one pokemon. But my orig. team I told you about they all got to 100 naturally. That's why I kept them. Do you still have that team on Silver?

I am VERY pumped for HG/SS. As I put in another thread, Silver is my favorite version ever.
What irks me somewhat is the people who go "the first generation was awesome, after that it started sucking", when the second generation really started fixing the flaws from the first game:
To switch gears - I think Game Freak has gone a little overboard with Arceus. If anything, it's their way of saying that they have finally run out of ideas. -------------------- |

I've always classed Gold and Silver in the same group of awesome as the originals. Ruby and Sapphire was where it started going downhill for me... G and S were definately truely epic. Espeon is my FAVOURITE. And the new pokemon weren't totally lame. I mean, come on. I would choose Quilava over a wierd firemonkey any day. -------------------- *Sigh*....Times are tough |

Pokemon Games I own:
Sapphire Ruby Leaf Green Emerald - Old Leaf Green Team (that I can remember) Venusaur (100) Gengar (100) Dragonite (100) Vaporion (100) Jolteon (100) I get confused now this was a long time ago and I traded these to my sister. I left about 15 level 100's on this game and about 387:00 hours of gaming fun when I started again. These days - - A team Gengar (100) Dragonite (100) Tyranitar (100) Metagross (100) Venusaur (100) - Legendry team Mewtwo (100) Rayquaza (100) Moltres (100) Articuno (100) Zapdos (100) I'm raising loads more too on Leaf Green but I can't find it at the moment. ![]() - Sapphire Team Kyogre (90) Ludicolo (90) Cradily (90) Torkoal (90) Dustox (90 + Shiny) Sableye (90) - Emerald Team Tropius (40) Sceptile (53) Lanturn (52) Glalie (54) Chimecho (52) Camerupt (53) - Ruby Team Magcargo (46) Mightyena (46) Azumarill (46) Crobat (46) Mawile (46) Minun (48) My Ruby team is scraping the bottom of the barrel a bit now. I think I've raised most the good pokemon in these 4 games. I've had to start raising two of the same one now I'm pretty sure I have 2 Manectrics over level 75 on different games. I havn't got a DS so these are all the ones I have, so i'm unfamiliar with the new games and new pokemon. Though I am watching the tv series at the moment. I'm up to Series 4! And yes I have no life, but you already guessed that. ![]() |

The more I think about it, the more I believe that HeartGold and SoulSilver will be the last regular Pokémon games Nintendo and Game Freak will release. They've made it just too easy to get the hard-to-get Pokémon. Not to mention that there are 493 Pokémon in the National Dex, and they're going to have one hell of a job coming up with new ones, especially after already creating oodles of new evolutions and pre-evolutions. Basing a Pokémon off of a wind chime was the first clue that they were running out of ideas, and you can't really create a legendary that can top PokéGod [Arceus]. I guess they could do a devil Pokémon, but that would risk enraging both overprotective parents and the devoutly religious alike.
After perusing Bulbapedia, I found out that in HG/SS, Professor Oak will give you one Kanto starter of your choice after getting all 16 badges from Kanto and Johto. Also, after you beat Red in Mt. Silver, Steven Stone will give you one Hoenn starter. And here's the list of every legendary Pokémon you can catch in HG/SS:
*Only one out of the three can be caught per save file Not counting Pokémon that are either given out at Nintendo events, can be found and battled thanks to items given out at such events, or acquired through hacking (Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Deoxys, Darkrai, Shaymin, Arceus), this means that every legendary Pokémon currently in existence can be caught in the 4th Generation games when you take into consideration that all three legendary golems can be battled and caught in Platinum with an event Regigigas. The only legendaries that can be caught only in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum are Uxie, Mesprit, Azlef, Cresselia, Regigigas, and Heatran. Manaphy [and, by extension, Phione, a pointless Pokémon save novelty value, IMO, but I digress] can only be acquired in D/P/Pt by those who have beaten either Pokémon Ranger games. (I preferred it when Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, and Mewtwo weren't available in Gen. II, since it implied that Red caught them, but that's just me [and the three birds roam Sinnoh after you beat the Elite Four in Platinum anyway].) All this was allegedly done to reduce players' dependence on the Generation III GBA games (this might be a clue that they're going to eventually discontinue DS's with GBA ports, if the DSi wasn't the first hint). This could benefit newcomers to the series who want to complete their Pokédexes, especially younger players, so that they don't have to track down the GBA versions and start completely new games just for the sake of a starter and a handful of legendaries. And the Pal Park is still there for those who still have the Gen. III games. My theory is that Nintendo and/or Game Freak realized that they've gotten as much out of the games as they're likely going to. Of course, they could make DS remakes of Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, and LeafGreen, but I doubt they would do that. (Then again, seeing as how there's both Final Fantasy IV Advance AND Final Fantasy IV DS, you can't be too sure.) Edit I want to both add this post and revive the thread, but I don't wanna double-post. Blarg. I noticed that everyone is posting their teams and whatnot. I find that I'm odd in that I'm not the type of trainer to raise a single team of six Pokémon. Instead, I often raise anywhere from one dozen to two dozen different Pokémon. If anything, it offers variety. For example, in my first playthough of Emerald, the Pokémon I regularly used were (if my memory has served me correctly):
In my current playthrough of Emerald, I'm at Norman, and my squad consists of:
I still hope to acquire a Sharpedo, Lanturn, Ninetales, Shiftry, Quagsire, Aggron (as soon as I can find an Aron with Rock Head instead of Sturdy), Tentacruel (bred with Confuse Ray), a second Blaziken (bred with Reversal & Endure), a second Shedinja (bred with Silver Wind), etc. Although when fighting Norman, I learned the obvious downside to having so many Pokémon, which is that they are all rather underleved (yes, I did lose). Currently, none are at level 25. And I'm not looking forward to level grinding, since wild Pokémon don't give a whole lot of experience. Oh well. On another note, does anyone else never use legendaries? This post has been edited by Insegredious on 7th December 2009 22:22 -------------------- |
