I uncovered what I think must be an error in translation or something during my first visit to the town of Icicle Inn near the Northern Crater. The second building on the left hand side of the screen was Professor Gast and Ifalna's last hiding place before Hojo and Shinra discovered them, and if you play the video machine inside the building you'll see informative videos that Professor Gast made on the Ancients, Weapon, and Jenova.

Anyway there's also a video marked "Confidential", and if you open that you're given two options;

10 days after daughter's birth
20 days after daughter's birth

If you click on the 10 days after daughter's birth option you'll "hear" (well read really) Professor Gast talking about his new born baby, saying that if the baby is a girl they should name her Aeris. What I find hilarious about this blooper is that while the log says 10 days after daughter's birth, Professor Gast still hasn't figured out if his new born baby is a girl yet! And I thought Professor's were suppose to be smart. biggrin.gif

Apparently by 20 days after his daughter's birth he's determined that she is in fact a baby girl, no doubt the discovery required all manner of extensive research and experiments! tongue.gif

Hahaha, I never noticed that before. Smooth moves, Gast.

The ONLY thing I can think that could be explained logically is that the videos were filmed and streamed and such, and he labeled them after the fact of editing and such. As for the lack of knowledge, perhaps he wasn't present for the birth, being a busy Shinra researcher? News didn't get to him immediately, or something... Unless I'm forgetting that this was their hiding place from ShinRa and we wasn't actually in their employ, which I may be, having just now recalled the hiding place thing...

So, with that, my argument may be moot, or plausible, I await someone with more recent knowledge to clarify.

Very recently played it through and actually it seems like a mixture of a translation error and a quote. See what he was actually saying during filming was that he had decided in the past that "if it is a girl it would be Aeris", hence why he didnt bother saying what the boy one was.
The way it should have gone was:
"I decided (in the past) that if it was a girl she'd be called aeris"
whereas it pretty much came out as:
ive decided (now) that if it is a girl she'll be called aeris.
Technically both sentences are correct, just the fact that the event in question has happened changes which part of the sentence is important.
its a subtlety (and weakness) of the english language that most people would miss.
