Wow that was a really exciting round. Poor Side Bombs...
1. Gilgamesh (1). Risky move here, since if FF6A wasn't tracked I get a nice +infinity to my score. 2. Final Fantasy 1 (1). 3. AFIR (3). This is the first spell I think of because I remember giving it to my Knights as a Warmech preventative. 4. Rusty Bucket Bay (2). Worst level ever. 5. Scout (2). I am particularly upset at how good this class is. 6. Side Bombs (6). TRAP! 7. Summertime (5). Another pretty big score here. Ouch. 8. Hephaestus (3). I really just had to choose this because I couldn't help but laugh when I imagined Hephaestus, the gimped god, trying to race fleet-footed Hermes. Fun round. Thanks again for doing this, Lasz. ![]() -------------------- Is PJ |

I hope everyone who participated did send at least a couple prompts to Lasz, by the way. We have always kind of had a history of having people around who don't like to just leech content and fun but want to contribute to it as well, and if there end up not being enough prompts to run a game it's not solely my and Lasz' fault.

Siren (5) - sex appeal
Final Fantasy V (2) - fun to play and not liked by everybody LAMP (3) - random choice Bubblegloop Swamp (3) - corniest name Sniper (4) - it's all SilverMaduin's fault for making me like that particular class :P Homing Missiles (2) - simplest answer Love (4) - because love is all you need Artemis (2) - Sailor Moon reference Total: 5760 Seems I'm out of luck. Maybe next round. -------------------- You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one... |

Siren (5) -- I had narrowed it down to Leviathan or Siren; clearly, I chose incorrectly. (I figured that people would go for the flashier, more powerful Leviathan.)
Final Fantasy Tactics (4) -- I just went with my favorite. Mute (1) -- Yay! I snuck one in. I figured no one would go for it. Freezeezy Peak (4) -- Wow! I went with my favorite element and look what it got me, the trap answer. Medic (2) -- Nobody picks the Healbot. Homing Laser (1) -- I don't even recall why I picked this one and I don't really care because it worked. Goodbye (4) -- Once again, I didn't have a particular thought process going on in this one. Though, I think that was due to the limited selection, figuring there would be a roughly even spread. Demeter (3) -- I figured it was a pretty safe bet. Not quite. Final Score: 1920 [Once again, I did pretty well, but haven't yet tasted victory.] 900: Name one of the Gung-ho Guns from the Trigun Anime. [13 possible answers] Trigun Characters Name one of the Shrine Knights from Final Fantasy Tactics. [Either 6, or 7 answers, depending on whether or not you allow Aliste Rosenheim from The War of the Lions] |

1 Odin(1) Thought it be too obvious for anyone else to pick.
2 FF6(3) Again, I thought no one would pick it. 3 Lamp(3) It sounded like a cool spell. 4 Clanker's Cavern(2) 5 Spy(3) 6 Radiant Sword(2) 7 Summertime(4) 8 Zeus(2) Total 1080. I'm actually Surprised I did so well. Normally in these games I would do really bad. |

Lol... Ouch...
Here's what I did... 1. Siren, because she was such a beginner boss in FFV that I figured people would overlook her. Dead Wrong on that... (5) 2. FFVI, Because I figured that since everyone really really loves it here, nobody would pick it because everyone else did. ![]() 3. INVS, just a random pick out of the middle (3) 4. Freezeezy Peak, Because it's Effing hard! Apparently, it stuck out in everyone else's mind also. (4) 5. Medic. This is why. (2) 6. Homing Missiles, because... duh! They're HOMING missiles! (2) 7. Cry. Nobody Really escaped that question... (4) 8. Demeter. Because she's Persephone's mom. (3) Grand Tally: 5*3*3*4*2*2*4*3 = 8640. ![]() -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! 1. Siren (5) It was this or Carbuncle which was the number two. Complete random chance I chose this tbh.
2. Chrono Trigger (5) - 'Its the most recent, it must be so obvious so everyone will avoid it.' Whoops. 3. CURE (2) - Again, randomly from the list, and nice and obvious. 4. Mumbo's Mountain (1) - First one on the list, in the source, looks like it paid off. 5. The Spy (3) - He has the best video. 6. Vulcan Cannon (2) - The word Vulcan is badass (but 'rear' isn't.) 7. Goodbye (4) - Totally random. 8. Artemis (2) - Again, random. Total = 2400 Great round, I'm totally up for the next, even if I did forget to submit an answer for prompt 900. |

OK, it's that time again. Actually, it's later than that time again, but Iwas gone all day and only got around to setting these up under an hour ago. Maryland drivers suck.
This time, to play all you need to do is send your answers either to laszlow in a PM or in an email to epicpoet AT gmail DOT com before 12 midnight US Eastern Time on 11 June 2009, just over four days from now. It's easy, it's fun, and it unites the CoN community for some fun and games. This week, the prompts were brought to you by laszlow, Rangers51, Silver Maduin, Kane, footbigmike, Caesar, leilong, Silver Zombie, the letter N, and the number 900. 1. Name a game or film that is part of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII* 2. Name one of the Shrine Knights in Final Fantasy Tactics** 3. Name a person who is credited on the FF4 section of CoN for "Additional Data Collection and Verification" 4. Name a Zone from the original Sonic the Hedgehog that has three Acts*** 5. Name a playable character in The 7th Saga 6. Name a song by The Cars that is playable in the Rock Band series 7. Name a member of the Straw Hat Pirates in One Piece**** 8. Name a released feature film by Pixar Animation Studios *There are six possible answers - different versions of the same game or film are not separate entries. **I cannot find a good source that clearly lists this information. The possible answers (as far as I can tell) are Delita, Balk, Izlude, Vormav, Rofel, Kletian, Wiegraf, and one other person from War of the Lions that Kane mentioned below. Feel free to look these names up on CoN or elsewhere if you're curious about the Shrine Knights or any plot details of FF Tactics. ***Final Zone is not allowed; everything else listed in the source is fine. ****The Going Merry and Thousand Sunny are not allowable answers. Recommended research sites: Caves of Narshe Compilation of FF VII Sonic the Hedgehog Zones T7S characters Rock Band master track list The Straw Hat Pirates List of Pixar films -------------------- |

Before I continue, I have to offer all of you an apology. Due to rather extreme circumstances (complications with graduation, an agonizing job search that landed me in retail hell, and the death of my dog) and admittedly my own negligence, this is over a month late. For that you have my sincerest apologies.
So, I have some good news and some bad news. First the good news: it's my 3000th post! I'd like to thank my parents, the Academy, and all of my friends and colleagues, and I'd like to dedicate this magnificent triumph to my late pooch Rosie... if this were an awards ceremony. The bad news is that this will be the last Rare Entries results of 2009, because there were only 14 participants this time around, and I promised only to continue the game if we would have at least 15 for each round. So until next summer (or more accurately, whenever someone brings up playing this again), here are your results. First of all, let's all congratulate THE_MAN who wins his first Rare Entries game with a fine score of 144. The mean score was about 2434 and the median was 1755. Here are THE_MAN's manswers: THE_MAN's Answers 1. Last Order: Final Fantasy VII (3) 2. Vormav (2) 3. FraudulentTommah (3) 4. Spring Yard Zone (2) 5. Lux (2) 6. My Best Friend's Girl (1) 7. Roronoa Zoro (1) 8. Toy Story (2) Winning Score: 144 Second Place: Shotgunnova (162) Third Place: laszlow (216) Fourth Place: Neal (288) This round was pretty normal, and I'm happy that the scores were reasonable despite a smaller number of players. Again, this will be the last Rare Entries of 2009, so this will be the last time in awhile that I write up a distro. Here goes nuttin'. 1. Name a game or film that is part of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII* I didn't count the two Dirge of Cerberus games as separate entries, so I'm even more surprised that two entries snuck by with singles. Otherwise nothing too scary. Three people found the hidden entry, so maybe they should have left it hidden. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (4) Final Fantasy VII (3) Last Order: Final Fantasy VII (3) Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII (2) Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII (1) Final Fantasy VII Advent Children (1) 2. Name one of the Shrine Knights in Final Fantasy Tactics** No one picked Kletian, Wiegraf, or the PSP exclusive girl. And look at all of those Rofels. rofl. Rofel (5) Balk (3) Delita (3) Vormav (2) Izlude (1) 3. Name a person who is credited on the FF4 section of CoN for "Additional Data Collection and Verification" I actually almost tried to pick myself, but then I remembered I had done barely any non-newsposting for CoN prior to the Chrono Trigger section. And poor ZH, I think he was the only person that went unpicked ![]() Sabin (3) FraudulentTommah (3) Xenon (3) Hanyou (1) Mimic (1) Karasuman (1) EvilEye (1) FootBigMike (1) 4. Name a Zone from the original Sonic the Hedgehog that has three Acts*** The only Sonic zone with a truly iconic name is the Green Hill Zone, whose name is sometimes used as a trope for a normal, grassy, easy first level of a game. I guess that's why it was a trap? Green Hill Zone (5) Star Light Zone (3) Marble Zone (2) Spring Yard Zone (2) Scrap Brain Zone (1) Labyrinth Zone (1) 5. Name a playable character in The 7th Saga The ultimate authority on The 7th Saga tells me that Lejes is the best, most powerful character in the game. Powerful enough to get picked five times, even. No one likes Kamil, boring jack of all trades that he is. I won't even mention the healer, since he can deal about as much damage as Niime with a Flux. Now there's an obscure reference for ya. Lejes (5) Olvan (3) Wilme (2) Esuna (2) Lux (2) 6. Name a song by The Cars that is playable in the Rock Band series Compared to the first five, these last three prompts are tame and trap-free. Lucky for you, boring for me. Good Times Roll (3) Don't Cha Stop (3) You're All I've Got Tonight (2) I'm in Touch With Your World (2) All Mixed Up (1) Bye Bye Love (1) Just What I Needed (1) My Best Friend's Girl (1) 7. Name a member of the Straw Hat Pirates in One Piece**** Ah, One Piece. One of those few "endless" manga that is somehow still entertaining. Really, I've just about given up on everything over 250 chapters long other than One Piece and Hajime no Ippo. But enough about me, where's the love for Usopp and Brook? Franky (3) Monkey D. Luffy (3) Tony Tony Chopper (3) Sanji (2) Nico Robin (1) Nami (1) Roronoa Zoro (1) 8. Name a released feature film by Pixar Animation Studios I'm a little angry at myself, because one of the two films that went unpicked is my favorite Pixar movie. If I had gone for it then I would have won, but alas no. Still, even with two movies left unpicked this was the safest prompt of the round. Finding Nemo (3) Ratatouille (2) Toy Story (2) Toy Story 2 (2) A Bug's Life (2) Cars (1) WALL-E (1) Monsters, Inc. (1) So that's all, folks! But I'll drop you a new wager: the first person that sends me a PM of *exactly* who my obscure reference from earlier was gets a $2 (US dollars) CoN gift certificate! And you guys say I'm not generous. Just give me her name, her game, and... some storyline context. Like what she does or the name of one of her relatives. PM it to me and the two bucks are yours. Hahaha, thanks for the plug, Lasz. I do pride myself on having little enough life to complete that game 8 times on console (including one in Japanese!). I guess that's why I fell for my own trap and picked Lejes. Nobody likes Valsu, though. For real. He may be the ultimate power late-game, but I actually hit a 0 with him once. No joke. 0 damage. That'll make ANYBODY delete a file and restart.
I think I might've hit the high score here: 1. Dirge of Cerberus Lost Episode: FF7 (2) 2. Delita (3) 3. Tommah (3) 4. Marble zone (2). The ceramic engineer in me is a sucker for marble. :/ 5. Lejes! (5) Obviously I had to choose Lejes because he's the man. 6. Don't Cha Stop (3). No reason to pick this, really. 7. Tony Tony Chopper (3). Read above. 8. Ratatouille (2). I really liked this movie. Total: 3240! Can anyone top this? I blame my seriously high score on Gorsia for revealing the best character to defeat him with. ![]() -------------------- Is PJ |

1. Crisis Core (4) - has Zack. Was a trap. Darn.
2. Izulde (1) - random pick. 3. Xenon (3) - I somehow thought nobody would pick him. Sorry. 4. Spring Yard Zone (2) - I was eating spring onion flavoured crisps at the moment. 5. Lejes (5) - again, a random pick, but not as rewarding as Izulde. 6. Bye bye love (1) - hey, I like the song. 7. Franky (3) - this guy is abulletproof pervert, I had to pick him. 8. Finding Nemo (3) - I tried to maneuver my way through the old-new releases. I failed. 1080. A nice, mystical score. CC and Lejes sealed my fate. Too bad about not continuing this. This Rare Entries thing is really fun. I shall be looking forward to next year's run. It's been fun Lasz. As for why I picked my answers, they were mostly random. Pretty good guesses, eh? 1. Last Order: Final Fantasy VII (3)--It's a nice piece of anime.
2. Rofel (5)--I went with my favorite, wrongly, especially since I had a feeling many people would go with it (my alternate was the un-picked Wiegraf) 3. Hanyou (1)--random pick 4. Marble Zone (2)--random pick 5. Lejes (5)--totally unfamiliar territory, so a random pick 6. Don't Cha Stop (3)--another random pick. (I should note that I had it down to this or Bye, Bye, Love, which as it turns out would have been a better choice.) 7. Franky (3)--I'm not a fan of One Piece and just picked at random 8. A Bug's Life (2)--I figured people would be going for the one of their more successful/popular films Total Score: 2700 <--Definitely not my best showing. |

My turn, I guess.
1. Final Fantasy VII (3) I went with the "hidden" entry, but several people picked up on it (I received some PMs and emails telling me so), and two others chose it. Not the best plan. 2. Balk (3) Rofel, Balk, and Kletian are three Shrine Knights that have auxiliary roles at best compared to Vormav, Wiegraf, and Delita, and I thought people would go for the more visible knights. Not only was my supposition wrong, I chose one at random and guessed wrong. 3. EvilEye (1) I hadn't seen EE around the forums in ages, so I figured he wouldn't get picked. Hooray. 4. Labyrinth (1) I knew I had to avoid Green Hills, but otherwise this pick was random. Hooray. 5. Wilme (2) I figured people would pick Esuna the most, with the FF coincidence for a name and all. I went with who I perceived to be a less-interesting character, and I guess I got lucky. 6. You're All I've Got Tonight (2) I had heard of 7 of the 9 songs on the list, and chose one of those seven at random. Got lucky again. 7. Franky (3) I love the Tom flashback arc in One Piece and Franky is almost exactly like an Earthbound character of the same name, so I went with him. Not the smartest decision. 8. Ratatouille (2) My three favorite Pixar films are The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, and Ratatouille. I wanted to go with one of those three, and decided that Ratatouille was the most obscure. I'm kicking myself over this, because I actually had to hold back a little and *not* choose The Incredibles. Score: 216 Not bad. Ah well, just for fun, let's do a huge, 4-year overall scoreboard. There have been 14 rounds of Rare entries since I ran the original, with 23 different CoN members scoring third place or better at least once. So this big ol' scoreboard is going to use swim meet rules and horse racing lingo - everyone receives 5 points for a win, 3 points to place, and 1 point to show. *drumroll* Winningest Rare Entries Participants 14 points - laszlow 11 points - shotgunnova 10 points - Rangers51 9 points - Glenn Magus Harvey 9 points - dont chocobos rule? 8 points - Neal 8 points - Duo_Dragoon 8 points - Silver_Zombie 6 points - FallingHeart 6 points - Gears 5 points - SilverMaduin 5 points - mcclanahan 5 points - Wizwum 5 points - THE_MAN 3 points - Dark Paladin 3 points - painreaver 3 points - sweetdude 3 points - Kappa the Imp 3 points - SilverFork 1 point - yunakitty 1 point - Galsic 1 point - mertinatron 1 point - Sherick Hilariously, despite having no wins, my enormous number of second- and third-place finishes puts me out on top. Thanks to everyone that's played in these, and I hope you have an excellent summer. This post has been edited by laszlow on 24th July 2009 02:54 -------------------- |
