I was browsing your guide on FF VII and I thought I'd ask this while I was here to those who might know.
So I'm experiencing some lag on disc 1 (I'm playing my original black label copy) whenever there is a cutscene or action CGI scene. It's not bad if I'm not required to be doing anything during the animation, but if It does, the lag usually hinders me from accomplishing it. Particularly at the moment in MT. Corel when you fall through the weak points in the mine car track, I lag during the fall scene and cannot hit the (O) button fast enough to get Cloud to shift left/right to get the Star Pendant and/or Wizard Staff. This might be a small deal to some, but it's really annoying me, and I'm not sure it will cause future problems. My first disc is pretty beat up and I want to know if scuffs, scratches or any other heavy wear and tear would cause this. The rest of the game has played fine so far. I've had no freezes or other glitches except during the CGI scenes. I ask because I may buy another copy of the game and I want to make sure this is definitely the issue before I spend another $50+ on a new copy. I also just recently bought a new PS one, which is in very good condition. So I don't suspect it to be a laser issue, although I have not tested any other dics to confirm this. Disc 2 and 3 seem to be in pretty good shape, but show some wear themselves. Anyway, just thought I'd see if anyone here who has been using the original discs to play on their PS might have some insight on the issue. Many thanks in advance. |

Scratches and wear on the disk are the most likely culprit behind this. My own discs are scratched a bit, and for a while they did slow down a hell of a lot during the cutscenes. Most notably the first and last cutscenes on the first disc. Now, I literally can't start a new game. The train pulls into the station, and nothing happens.
So, yeah, disks in a poorer conditions will slow down at first, but it's likely that they may just fail entirely sooner or later. |

In my experience, scratches are always the problem, like FBM says. There are three ways I know of to fix this.
Firstly, try turning your PSX on its head, and play it with the console upside down. This can sometimes make everything work better. I managed to get the opening FFVIII cinematic working with this method, as well as a lot of other minor lagging. If that doesn't work, use the disc on a PS2 if you can. Sometimes a problem on the PSX is solved by the PS2, and vice versa. If you're really stuck, then go to a games shop and ask them to fix the scratches. I assume you're from Britain? Gamestation has a machine which can completely fix discs for only £1.50. I've had to do this with a number of discs over the years, and only one still doesn't work properly. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Nope! I'm from the US, but either way thank you both for the info. I'll probably just end up buying a used copy in near mint or very good condition. I tried the toothpaste trick, but that didn't seem to help. I think the wear on my disc 1 is pretty severe so paying for a cleaning may not be worth the trip to the game store anyway.
Thanks again guys! Happy gaming. |

I hope you realize the price you're looking at for even a greatest hits copy of FFVII. Since they stopped making the game it's become outrageous in price. I could imagine the black label copy being over $100 in good condition. It might be better, in the long run, if you just go have the disc resurfaced.

Been pricing it over the last few days, which is why I didn't just jump the gun and order it.
Most copies that fit what I am looking for (Black label, in very good or mint condition) are ranging from $65-$100.00. I have actually found one that claims to be in very good condition for $50.00, I am just waiting for clarification on whether or not in their testing of disc 1 they noticed any lag in CGI scenes. I would love to buy it new, but that's upwards of $180.00 even for the GotY edition, as you mentioned. Not worth it. I used to have the Versus Books guide as well and that's been misplaced over the years. I couldn't believe it was going for $75-$100.00 used. Thankfully there is plenty of good guides available on the web. (Like CoN's) I am hoping that Seventh Heaven project is going to come though. Could be a very fantastic guide in print form. If you have a ps3, the ported version you can buy in the online playstation store is only £7 and that's about 14 US dollars.

The 'Merican version is $10, for what it's worth.

Alas, I do not have a PS 3.
I could be darned to go and buy one just for that. I made the idiot decision of buying a Wii. Even though X-box and PS 3 are better there aren't a lot of console games I play outside the FF collection these days. I'm not a fan of anything after 9 so I can't justify buying a newer console. I wish I hadn't bought the Wii. I do get to play FF IV the after years, but I really hate the episodes and wish they just released it as a complete title. |

I too have noticed these problems in ff7 on disks 1&3 and in ff8 on Disks 1,3&4. I cannot even play them anymore the disks are so damaged. I opted for the PC versions of these games as I seem to get better gameplay from them thatn the original PSX games....Just a thought

FF 7 PC version is very bad in my eyes, mainly cause of the controls, and FF 8 is even worse - You can exit the game only via alt + F4 !
You REALLY should consider this action: Quote If you're really stuck, then go to a games shop and ask them to fix the scratches. I assume you're from Britain? Gamestation has a machine which can completely fix discs for only £1.50. I've had to do this with a number of discs over the years, and only one still doesn't work properly. My FF VIII disc was that demolished that I wasn't even able to start a new game - Now I got it back and it seems to work perfectly =) This post has been edited by Bas on 30th July 2009 14:23 |

In crappy quality you can get it for about £35. you'd have to fork over £70 quid just to get it anywhere close to use-able. I'd say since you don't have a ps3 you should go to a gameshop and have it cleaned for about 3 US dollars. -------------------- If god is all-forgiving then why do we have to kill people in his name? |
