I've only played the GBA version, and to be honest I don't see why the SNES version would be better except for the ever reccuring nostalgia.
Oh, and the GBA's music capacities. x_X

They make script changes that I do not like personally. And I do not think those changes added to the story, they only detracted.

I understand you, but playing the GBA version first gives me a different experience, so I can't really agree with you.

A change I want to mention is:

SNES:

He'd slitt his mama's throat for a nickel.

To

GBA:

He'd even kill his best friend for the right price.

What difference does this make? A lot. The SNES version makes him look like a crazed killer, whilst the GBA version makes him seem more like a cold, emotionless assasin.

Of course, there's always the humor in Woosleys translations..

You'd have to play it. Some of it is better, but Woosley's script is awesome because it's quirky.

Nostalgia always wins. SNES. As far as translation goes, localization gives it a personal touch. I've always felt that people look at translation differences in the wrong light. Instead of our version being botched because it doesnt fit the Japanese version exactly, it makes it OUR version. Neither is wrong, and both can add depth depending on how its translated. Honestly, if I were working for squenix, I would have some personality traits put into the two differing versions, and that, only by playing both versions, or talking to a friend overseas can you truly understand the entirety of a character.

As with most everyone else, I definitely steer clear of the ridiculously slow PS version. Much as I love the original SNES version, I'm going with the GBA version. Woolsey's translation doesn't bother me much, so that's not really an issue. However, what pushes the GBA version over the top for me comes in the form of fixed bugs and new content. I'm a sucker for new content (though, I don't feel anyone should view that as a 'suckerable' offense. Just because something is 'the original' doesn't make it better.).

FFVI on the SNES was the first version, the others are great, but they're just remakes. And you can call it nostalgia, but in the entertainment industry, which is built from sequels, prequels, and simple brands of unoriginality, the fact that the original has the imperfections and quirks makes it better. It was how it originally looked when the creators made it and released it.

Old stuff Rocks! I play still Dungeon keeper which was released in 1996
and games on the SNES and NES are more Nostalgic than the new stuff.

Yeah that's not worth it. I'm trying to get a copy of FFVII, but I'm not paying $100 for it.

Anthologies was unplayable for me because the music sounded absolutely mutilated by the altered instrument set.

I was really excited about FF VI GBA, until I read the item names that tried too hard to be improved and heard about a certain Celes sprite that was censored to avoid sensationalism. The concept of extra dungeons kinda turns me off in general too, as I feel it weakens the story's integrity to add an entirely new area post-production, that's just me though.

It's kinda sad because portability equaling cool aside, I feel it fixed the one fatal flaw of the SNES original:
Possible spoilers: highlight to view
Leviathan's in it.

I accidentally Null voted. I think I prefered the SNES version (haven't hooked it up to verify), but I'm playing the PS version. I get about a 3-4 second pause anytime I want to go into the menu. Also Sabin pauses for 1/2 a second or so at the top of his leap for AuraBolt. I don't recall the original on SNES being that way.

I may just have to hook it up and test one of these days.

I played the SNES version first. To be honest? It was my favorite because I could Joker/Doom or Vanish./Doom all those tough bosses and get him in like two turns.

Wait, are you saying Vanish/Doom or Vanish/Xfer doesn't work in the GBA Version!? ohmy.gif

It is so hard to choose between the PSX and SNES because...

1.I say other than new content I believe that SNES and PSX were the same translation.with exception of the Shadow error where the SNES called him a she or her or whatever.

2.Yes the cut scenes in PSX at least in my view were beautiful and cool but then...

3.PSX had load times of which never really bother me.

4. PSX controller is too bulky in comparison to SNES.

5.Both SNES and PSX have the 2nd player battle option.

6.PSX had a easy to get full bestiary you unlock from beating the game unlike the GBA that you had to find each individual monster and SNES had none.

So I'd shockingly have to say SNES because of the nostalgia factor but then PSX 2nd and GBA 3rd because even though it is more accurate translation it ain't the original translation. But I do love the extras in GBA but the other two had well look at the list above.

Eh...yep.
It has been a long time since I played FF VI, but some bonus for the PSX version were the nice movies (iirc the last one really ruled ^^) + the monsters database. Though; I would have preffered if you could have check the FF VI DB even ingame, cause this would have been FAR more useful (plus it would have been nice if every enemy (except bosses?) would have been unlocked after he got beaten)
Also, I first played the PSX version, but since I am "Out of memory", I won't vote any.

but now i NEED it on another system. You see, to flee from battle on the GBA version, you hold the R and L buttons down.
My L Button is unresponsive 87% of the time.
So i cant excape horribe battles.

I played the original SNES version and the PSX version (which I am currently replaying). I never played the GBA version, but I don't see the point of remaking the graphics if they're not gonna look realistic.

I voted for the PSX version because it's basically a port of the SNES version but with some (IMO) sweet CG scenes and I enjoyed having the bonus features. Also, the load times don't bother me at all, I pretty much don't notice them.

I voted for the GBA version. The extra goodies won me over but I have to admit the music and sound could never touch the Snes version.

Having never played the SNES version, I'm obviously biased towards the GBA version.
Thus, I can't really comment on the changes to the script and whatnot.

I do think, though, that they went too far out of their way to "update" the names of items, weapons, espers, enemies, etc. Changing the names of spells to keep up with the series (Life -> Raise, Fire3 -> Firaga, and so on) makes sense, but it's awfully annoying to wonder what you can steal from Enemy X, jump onto CoN to check, and not find the enemy anywhere because the name was changed (and similar obnoxious scenarios).

Some of the name changes seem relatively pointless: Tritoch -> Valigarmanda, Dirt Dragon -> Earth Dragon, Striker -> Kagenui, the list goes on and on.

Also,
"Bum Rush" > "Phantom Rush"

GBA all the way. Fixed bugs is awesome (BTW I hate hate hate Vanish/Doom because it takes all the fun out of the game). Cool translation is awesome (exceptions being that Atma is ten times cooler than Ultima). And my absolute favorite, no more capitalized names! That one little thing killed all of my nostalgia as soon as I fired up the Gameboy version.

Something that took Nintendo four generations of Pokémon to get right. But I digress.

I never really understood why games did that in the first place - I'm not particularly fond of going around as "INSEGREDIOUS", but that's just me.
