I definitely prefer the numbers......though I think that may be due to the fact that I'm so used to them.....the recent system just annoys me though. The names just don't sound right to me

I have to go with the number system. Numbers are a clear indication of how powerful the spells are, and even though I do think the numbers do sound a bit odd, I think the a/aga system makes the spells sound even more odd...
I wouldn't be opposed to being able to change spell names, or at least being able to switch back and forth between either system... But really, in games like FFT each spell has a description you can check at anytime to see its effect, the same goes with items. Even though they use the numbering system in FFT they could have easily used the a/aga system or totally changed the spell names altogether, and it wouldnt have mattered that much, as you can always check the spell description.... -------------------- Quote <FrPhoenix[Around]> "Burgleburgleburgle" |

i like the -a -ara -aga system. first of all, it sounds better. secondly, it isn't that hard to tell the difference between strength.
Quote just make the first 'a' a long vowel.Try saying Hastega aloud. actually, i don't really care which. i dont like, however, when they change the names of the spells/summons for remakes. -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! I prefer the - / a / aga / aja system, for many of the reasons stated above.

Quote (karasuman @ 26th April 2007 19:35) See, I *don't* like spells like that, because it's hard to tell which descriptive name outranks which other one. I agree with karasuman because it would be difficult to see which one is more powerful. In this example, Bolt 1, Bolt 2, and Bolt 3, you can tell which one is the strongest by number since as numbers go up, there's more of the thing. Therefore, I believe that the numbers would be easier to read, but the -aga and -ara,ira do sound a little more magic-like! -------------------- Profanity is for those who lack the intelligence and imagination to otherwise express themselves. Personally I was never at home with the new spell naming, I just thought that numbering the spells made more sense and fire3 sounds more fearsome then firaga

Well, actually, I can't remember what I've voted, but since I haven't posted here I might as well do.
While the numbered spells are easily more understandable, I perfer the named spells. It makes more sense for one thing, getting a new name for spell that does something similar only greater in power, rather than slapping another number on the end. Numbers worked in FFII, but that was due to the spell leveling system and the spell name didn't really change, just the characters' proficiency with them. Also, case in point: the Shin Megami Tensei series, some of the games from which I've been playing recently: for one, they DON'T name elemental spells after the elements they use. Second they have a set of pre- and suffixes that state their power, whether they're targeted or AOE, etc. . -------------------- "I fell off the mountain of words at around the 10,000ft mark. I don't really mind too much.
I voted named rather than numbered because of Curaja, Firaja, Darkja etc and the impact that has in FFXII. It just wouldn't be the same if it were Fire 4 or whatever, I don't think. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. I voted for the suffix endings, because as most people on that side have mentioned it actually sounds like a spell.
Though personally, I think it would be better if they used prefixes, or better yet, just tacked on a word in front of the spell to show that it's more powerful. It's kind of a weak example, but say you could use "Greater Fire" to denote that it's a stronger spell than the basic "Fire." Or something along those lines. -------------------- One day the water's gonna wash it away. |

I've had a bit more time to think about it and have decided that I'd rather have suffixes that numbers (at least in part because not all the spells even have multiple 'levels' and don't require numbers). That said, I still don't particularly care for the chosen suffixes; they still don't sound 'right' to me.

Well, for gameplay purposes the numbers are better, because you can easily find which spell is the strongest if you're quickly choosing. But the suffixes do add just a little touch to the experience.

I don't really have a preference when it comes to offensive spells (in conversation, I use Fire 3 and Firaga interchageabley) but I prefer the suffixes for healing spells. Case in point: Life 1 revives a KO'd character, Life 2 revives with full HP, Life 3 automatically revives with 25% HP when KO'd. I prefer the Revive, Arise, and Reraise, respectively.

FFXI actually uses both, albeit with roman numerals instead. Fire I, Fire II etc. for single target spells, and Firaga, Thundaga etc. for multi-target spells. Even the -aga versions have tiers though, such as Curaga II and Blizzaga III.
I personally prefer the numbers because that's what I grew up on. |

Honestly...the -aga system. Because if I imagine my casters shouting out their abilities Power Rangers-style, "Blizzara!" sounds marginally less stupid than "Ice 3!"

I'd have to say, even though its way more confusing, I like the Cure, Cura, Curaga etc system the best. The numbering makes more sense, but the -a, -ara, -aga one sounds more realistic. Like, if magic spells were real, people would be way more inventative than to just number the different levels. I hope 0.o

Quote (Crazyswordsman @ 27th April 2007 02:21) Uno dos tres! Repiten mas alto, por favor! Uno dos tres! (cuatro?) Yeah. The old numbering system says more about the spell than some crappy a -ga -ja ending system. Although I honestly wish the spells had names like "Spark," "Flame," and "Scorch," similar to the way Lufia does it. You know, to make it sound more like you're making something happen. Something that's not quite a word really ires me except for Ultima. -CSM I ALSO went with the numbered system. I thought the ara/aga was too tacky and something totally different than what I grew up with. This post has been edited by Stauf on 24th July 2009 15:20 |

I voted ara/aga. I might be biased towards this system since my favourite game (VIII) uses it. It really isn't that difficult to remember that -ra is more powerful then the standard and that -aga is more powerful than -ra. And for the ones like hastega which are the same as the base spell but multi-target it should only take one casting of the spell to figure that out if the game doesn't tell you outright.

I'll go with the terminations -ara, -aga -aja. Numbers sound a little odd for spells, they are more comfortable for gameplay purposes, but they don't sound “magicalâ€.
There's a flashback in FFV where little Faris is reciting spells for her tutor. I can't imagine that scene with numbers, Faris would appear... dumb. Does the Anthology version of FFV use the numbers? -------------------- "Love, and do what you will" Saint Augustine |

Quote (Sandyboots @ 25th July 2009 13:09) Numbers sound a little odd for spells, they are more comfortable for gameplay purposes, but they don't sound “magical”. I have to agree with you on that point. I think it really boils down to whether one believes function should always follow form. In this case, both accomplish the end goal. The only difference is the paint: one prioritizes simplicity, the other prioritzes being dynamic and interesting. But hey, as long as they avoid completely nonsensical names for their spells a la the .hack// games (How am I supposed know, from the name alone, what something like “Ormi Ani Zot” is supposed to do ![]() Ultimately, being a fan of keeping things simple, I have to go with the number system. It's what I know, it's what I like, it's where I'm comfortable.
