VI is better in every way. That's not to say I didn't like IV, but it just felt a bit more like a casual game, with VI being an epic saga.

The two biggest features of VI which make it superior to IV (and others) is the entire WoR idea and the unique style.

In my view, the WoB is just a prelude to introduce characters and a bit of story before the WoR. Celes waking up on the island is where the game really begins. I haven't played any game which has been able to recreate the same atmosphere. I suppose you could say that IV is the like playing through the WoB and ending there. We do go to other places, which is quite fun, but they're just not as enjoyable.

IV and many other games simply copy a style. 'Medieval Europe meets feudal Japan in an airship' is the norm, and IV achieves this very well. However VI manages to carve a completely new style that I can't quite define. Maybe a cross between medieval Russia, Arabia and good ol' steampunk would be close. I like Xenogears for the same reason. VI tries something peculiar and is all the better for it.

Let's just start off by saying that these along with VII are probably the best Final Fantasies. So, even if you say that one is leaps ahead of another, they are still the best. I would also say, that since I voted for VI, I will say that IV paived the way for VI, VII, and all other FFs. With that, I begin.

Final Fantasy VI is such an amazing game. It's a masterpiece. The story is amazing; the plot is intricate, the characters are deep and realistic, and its themes are powerful. There might be "more fun to play" games, even in the series, there's just a feel to it, I don't know what it is, that makes it so great.

I think it's when you combine the look and sound with the story and gameplay together that you get what I call the "feel" of a game. And I think that FFVI has a better feel to it than any other game. Whenever people talk about the possibility of creating art in video games, I think about FFVI.

VI is by far better, due to a better and smoother script, higher-quality musical instruments/waveforms (in the sound system), and more graphical detail to characterize the cast. Also, a more interesting story that handled twists better and with more emotional intensity.

I voted for IV.

Although FFVI was my favorite game up until about 3 or 4 years ago, FFIV has surpassed it in my mind. I think I ruined it for myself by hacking FFVI so extensively, and I can no longer appreciate the game knowing how glitchy and sloppily coded it is. In fact, I have not even played FFVI on my Super Nintendo since I began hacking it. I just have no interest in the game anymore.

Although its plot is superior to IV (graphics in my mind are essentially the same, since in neither case do the graphics take away from the experience), I enjoy IV much more. The combat system is just more fun to me and I like the characters more than I do in VI.

Really, if I look at this in an objective light, FFVI really should win out. I can't think of any reason why it shouldn't except that I just plain don't like it anymore. I love playing FFIV, even after just finishing a 100% playthrough; on the other hand, I haven't played FFVI in about 4 years and don't plan to in the future. It wouldn't even make my top 10 list of SNES RPG's if I had to make one right now.

So yea, in likely the most subjective vote in this site's history, I go with FFIV.

Four had a good story, likable characters, an interesting world map, nice gameplay and amazing music. The case is I could say the same about many other games. In fact, replace my statement with five and it's still true to me, but five added other things like the class changing system.

And six has even more to add. The story was good plus it had an amazing villain. There were more characters with better development. And while the gameplay was inferior to five, it retained four's set classes and added a level of customization via relics and the espers.

And this is more of a personal quirk, I absolutely loathe when the game sets my party in stone. I don't mind when there's only a few characters (FFIII, FFV), because I can't pick anyone else. I don't mind the main character being forced, because someone has to pull the plot ahead. But all of the party, all the time?! And the worst part was the excuses they gave. Oh no, this guy died! Oh, he's alive! And he died again. That other guy too? They're all alive!.. except the old guy that nobody cared about, but you can't use them in your party anyway, nya! IMHO FFII pulled it off much better.

I'm one of those people that likes FF6's WOR a lot more that the WOB. And it's the same reason I like six more than four: the freedom.

One of this days I'm going to play FFIV advance, and build my dream team, one of this days...

Well, at least they put in the effort to justify it in the story, and the plot does in fact work, even if it is cheesy at times.

FFVI.

It's a tough choice. A lot of what I love about FFVI also happens to be what I love about FFIV. I enoy both games' plots and characters, and I had fun playing each. FFVI, however, edges out FFIV by a bit in each category. While Kain is one of my favorite characters of all time, so are Cyan and Shadow. While the worlds of FFIV are exciting, FFVI's feels more alive. FFVI runs away with trophies in the story and villain categories though. All in all... I just realized once again how much I love FFVI wub.gif

I voted Final Fantasy IV.

While I love FF VI, FF IV was the gateway game for me, not only for my love of Final Fantasy, but games like it. Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Illusion of Gaia, etc.

FF IV was the first game I played all day, stayed up all night playing, and then half the next day. I fell in love with the characters, the Kingdoms, the plot, and the game in general. It will always be my first love. wub.gif

FFIV was my gateway to the FF series, too. (Well, not including SMRPG and CT.) I never fell in love with the game, though I remember feeling that it was quite a lot of fun, and it caused me to be interested in FFVI.

FFV followed after that, as did SoM, FFMQ, FFIII, FFI, Lufia 2, GS/GS:TLA, and many other RPGs.

Love VI, but going to have to vote along for FF IV.

VI has a huge storyline and heaps of characters that you get to know and love.

But FF IV was just amazing for the time that it was created and designed.

FF IV was created a long time ago, yet it has a storyline and characters that stand out more than some of it's later sequels, not to mention the classical music and the graphics for it's age. FF IV just shows effort and that hard-work still shows today. FF IV just has a magical feeling about it.

It took a while to warm up to VI but it only took 30 mins to start drawing character fanart and being addicted over the games characters and musical themes when it came to Final Fantasy 4...

FFIV came out only 3 yrs before VI did, so it's not much older. Plus, I'm not saying that IV doesn't have great music, but look at the legendary music numbers from VI, along with the fantastic scenes.

Bottom line is, I guess, that they're both so good that it's hard to say that one has more magic than the other. But, in an artistic standpoint, FFVI is just a work of art, a masterpiece. I think it is Square's magnum opus.

There is no game till this day that recreates the effects of comedy+great scripture.

The script in ff6 if it can be called it,is simply AMAZING!!!!!!

The story is also perfectly aligned and each characters story is very deep.

I still think FFIV is great and underrated as it is.

Ever since ff7 ff8 ffX and FFXII the old ffs get more and more overshadowed and forgotten about.

while it is great they recaptivate them and put them on psp,i do not care for the 3d graphics they give to cecil or rosa.

The graphics for kain and for golbez are very well captured though in 3D.


I still have to say that till today my favorite pieces of music are still final fantasy 4.

Especially:
Dwarf city music

I think that all the musics are brilliant and i recognize them all.

The one i least liked i think was the main map music.

So ff6 takes great scripture and well linked character's story and such and puts them together beutifully.

FF4's Soundtrack is simply amazing.It deserves award as the best soundtrack i've heard so far.

Keep in mind i haven't played FFXII yet and i cannot say

Also i find ff7's characters to be empty so i would put ff4 and ff6 against ff7 anyday and believe they would win.Even the Comedy script part of cloud dressing up simply isn't funny.While the story has some deep points and its very well done,it is not the best.

This was a surprisingly difficult question to answer because they're both phenomenal games. FFIV was also the first game in the series I played. One of FFIV's few flaws, IMHO, was the inability to select your party make-up (though, since Advance has come out I've determined I'd stick with the party they gave us in the original). FFVI let you choose from a huge cast of characters, each awesome in his/her own way. Even though I've got a bit more by way of nostalgia when it comes FFIV, I picked FFVI. More (and better) customization and characterization cements victory for FFVI.

the Main reason I liked 6 over 4 was the fact that 6 had way more characters, and also the fact that you could make your own party, instead of being stuck with the characters your given.

I think both games are AWESOME in themselves. They both offer major replayability (for me anyway), they have interesting and likeable characters and compelling storylines.

However, VI has a wider cast of characters and it's longer. I played IV way before I ever played VI. In fact when I played IV it was II for the SNES. Thank god that Mom and Pop video store had awesome SNES RPG's!

IV is what hooked me into the series, but VI furthered my interest in the series. So I have to vote for VI.

Yeah, I had to shell out $40 for FFVI. And when I bought it, that was the price for a brand-new video game. Mom and Pop ripped me off for a game that didn't have the original case. But that was before I realized that it would be the greatest game I ever played and worth the money.

i voted IV for the sole reason that i like the characters more. FF VI had too many comic relief characters that weren't even funny in the first place. Kefka mightve been cool when i first played it, but i am absolutely sick of people saying how amazing he is. he's becoming the next sephiroth and i really want him to go away. also, i know kefka is a clown, but i wish he was more serious sometimes. overall, vi felt too...campy. it did have its moments, but i couldnt take the game seriously.

I liked VI because the evil dude never changed. It was always Kefka to beat and not an alien dude being controlled by another alien dude and the same goes for V. No really I really don't like aliens they just ruin games for me (*cough cough*40K)

If this was any game past 7 it would be a lot easier because 1-6 are shielded from 'new-age square fans' but comparing 4 to 6 is like comparing a Ferrari to a Lamborghini, both great cars and yet completely different from each other.

Therefore I shall null vote.

I don't think they're shielded, but perhaps overshadowed by the popularity of 7-12. But even if they're the Ferrari and Lamborghini of the series, you can still compare them to see which is better.

Final Fantasy 6: Great game and all, but as soon as the WoR hit, the characters lost...well, "character". It just felt like playing Final Fantasy 5 where characters don't have much personality and they don't have unique dialogues. If FF6 didn't get the cake, then...

Final Fantasy 4: Excellent plot, excellent cast, excellent music, excellent graphics (for a 1991 game), excellent challenge, excellent battle system, need I say more?

I agree. While WoR is supposedly non-linear, it actually has some of the most intriguing character development in the game. And that is surprising with a 14 character cast.

Uummm.. it's basically less than 2-4 minutes of some scenario of some characters, and then it's back to the world map. The plot itself was just retarded in the end. It was pretty much just getting your friends back to fight Kefka.

I've never felt like that when playing VI. It's not just the events in the WoR which develop the characters, but also how they've changed in the year since the WoB.

The story was just get your friends back to fight Kefka, but that's really good! I really enjoyed hunting high and low for them across a destroyed planet full of little side-quests and new monsters.

What I like about VI rather than IV is that the characters all seem to have their own lives rather than just being a part of the team. In the Locke and Terra stories I really felt like I was witnessing an independent story. IX also did this brilliantly. With IV, everyone is after the same goal, so they lose some of their individuality after a certain point. If we look at the difference between Yang's castle and Cyan's castle, the former is just a quick siege and that's the end of it. With Cyan, however, we have Cyan's individual defence of the castle, the Phantom Train and the dream sequence in the WoR, all of which are different and continue to develop him as a character.

Events in IV seem to be quickly forgotten about. VI is far more consistent, the characters are better for it.

Funny how you say that, could you give me some true examples of character development in IV? You avoided my questions about V. You keep telling they are bad characters, but you don't say what is oh sooo much better in IV.

I'm not saying that FFIV cast is bad, is just that it bothers me you are bashing V and VI when they have equally or better grounds.

Mog, Umaro and Gogo are extra characters. They are only there for extra fighting force, they have no deep or relevance for the story. I'm not defending them.

The reason characters share dialog is because the story can go either way you want, you can go directly to storm Kefka tower with just Celes, Edgar and Setzer, or you could have all fourteen characters. To program all case scenarios would be hell.

Haha!, way to generalize things, look I can do it too!:

CECIL: I'm agsty because I'm a dark knight. Yay! I'm a paladin now! For great justice! MOON POWAHH!
ROSA: Cecil I wuv you!, I'm going to be the sweet pretty girlfriend that is a white mage and follow you till the end!

RYDIA: You killed my mother! But I'm going with you anyway. * gets eaten by Leviathan * *returns * Look, I'm hot now!
EDGE: I'm a cocky prince. Rydia ur sooo much hot!

And that's the main cast, don't get me started with Palom, Porom and Yang. What was the point of them?

Note: The above was a parody. I actually love Edge, Palom and Porom. And I'm having a blast playing “The After” right now. But I felt it was necessary to get my point across.


And to counter your other statements.

SHADOW: So, we know about Shadow past... That is a bad thing because?
CELES: You saved Cid right? Then you missed one of the most emotional driven scenes in the game. Let the old man die the next time.
STRAGO: You didn't do his sidequest right?, The one with Hidon?
RELM: AHA! You found Relm in a cave. That means you didn't got Shadow in the WOR.
LOCKE: What's this? And you aren't complaining about Rydia being able to get over her fire-fobia in one minute?
GAU: Now here's an interesting one. Despite Gau being a “comedy relief” he gets his own “drama” scene. It was funny and sad at the same. Even when Gau's father rejects him, he's still HAPPY that his father is ok, and continues his journey with his new family. Gau grows stronger in the Velt, Gau no failure, uwao to you. (As a side note, Gau doesn't like ships or airships).
