This is for those of us who are interested, or, God forbid, voted in these elections. What's your take on the election and the EU as a whole? And, if you had nothing better to do, who did you vote for?

Straight off the bat I can tell that the rightists are back, and I'm not happy in the least. It's the same old bloody story: things are a bit difficult for us, so let's all resort back to nationalism and alienate ourselves rather than unite. Old hats the British National Party and UK Independence Party will no doubt make some gains this time round at Labour's expense. I see that the Dutch equivalent has done quite well already.

The biggest problem for me is the Socialist Labour Party. Instead of a meaningful alternative to the standard offering, they're a motley crew of train drivers who want to steam the country back to 1973. Sometimes I think that this party is there for the simple reason of making a mockery of socialism, and causing Labour problems because people might make an error on their ballot.

For what it's worth I voted Scottish Socialist by post because they've pledged to pay their MEPs the standard skilled labour wage. If values start at the top, that's about as good a start as I could wish for. Now we just need one.

I'm afraid I don't know much about the rest of Europe, but I'd be really interested in hearing some points of view.

And here's another question I'd like to ask you: does anyone else feel that trustee representation is a distraction from the fact that there is no real democracy in the world?

I didn't bother to vote. Although had I it would likely have been one of the socialist party's

I can't vote yet.

Personally, I don't like EU that much. Takes away a lot of the indpenece in a lot of countries, especially with the Euro. Also, if countries like Italy, France, Germany etc should change to the Euro, why shouldn't the UK and Denmark or Sweden? There was an election 2002 in Sweden about the euro, and we didn't want it, but what the, what is the point? Why take away the history of the old currency like that?

I don't quite follow. Are you saying that the Euro is a good thing that Britain, Denmark and Sweden should adopt or something pointless which takes away the traditions of a country?

As far as I understand, which isn't much, the GBP gives Britain a degree of flexibility to control its own economics. Changing to the Euro would remove some of this. Presumably the same applies for Sweden. The Euro, however, maintains a consistent and safe exchange rate so our money isn't in as much danger. If anyone knows more please post. I suppose I could look it up on wikipedia, but I don't want to.

I think it's pointless the way it takes away the traditions of a country, whilst it's both unfair and understandable that some countries change and some doesn't.
