Surely the half-dozen of us in chat weren't the only people watching Microsoft's presser that just ended. So, what did you guys think? Highlights, boring stuff, REALLY boring stuff?
The Halo franchise does nothing for me, so maybe that stuff was really groundbreaking and I just can't see the allure. I really don't think it was that interesting, though, was it? Modern Warfare just looked pointless, as well, though I think part of that was the "look how friggin' clever we are" demo. It just looked unpolished and preposterous. There were more upsides, though, for sure. A "playable" FF13 with English voice was interesting, to say the least. Rock Band Beatles looked good aside from the fact that the characters looked rubbery and unfinished relative to what I would have expected. The advent of Metal Gear Solid on a non-Sony box was pretty predictable given recent rumors, but still a pretty big shot across the bow of the PS3, and Forza 3 looked like a really pretty racer that might interest me enough to purchase if the car design tools are as good as they look. And, hey, the elephant in the room - Project Natal. Met with much derision in chat, the fact remains that it has the potential to be pretty interesting. However, who's willing to lay odds that just because you will have the (probably pricey) option to use your 360 like a Wii on 'roids, you actually will want to? ... unless, of course, it has Tiddles' proposed option, "drown Milo." Edit Whoa, totally forgot Left 4 Dead 2. I wouldn't play it on a 360 even if it was a permanent exclusive, but yay for more zombors, even if I have to pay for them. Does anybody know what the changes will be in FFXIII between consoles? I've just been told that there will be no optional Japanese dubbing on 360, and that the voice acting sounds like Advent Children.

If the fighting demo from Natal works anywhere near what they made it out to be, I am really interested. But the thing is, I know it won't be. All of these UI "breakthroughs" always turn out to be rubbish or completely non functioning, and seeing how high concept this one is I know it won't work. And the Milo demo suffered from the same thing that all of Peter Molyneux's projects do: extremely impressive technical achievement with absolute lack of any appeal whatsoever. I really like Peter Megazord as a developer and his games are almost always interesting, but they can never really keep my attention.
Left 4 Dead 2 is kind of unneeded in my opinion. What more could they add through this game that they couldn't, and weren't already, servicing through DLC and updates? Judging from the split second we saw of the new characters as well, they just didn't seem as colorful. MGS4 on 360 is... bittersweet. I waited for 4 months after its initial release for word of it coming to 360 but after no word I sucked it up and bought a PS3 pretty much just for that release (and LBP). I'm still glad that it's broadening its audience, because it really is such a good game, but I can't help but feel unlucky. And lastly, I am excited as heck for Rock Band Beatles. After all of the spinnoffs and band exclusive GH games, there is finally one that I can find totally worth my money. Edit Oh wow, I totally misinterpreted what I heard about MGS on the 360. I didn't realize it was a new game. I'm totally down for that! I guess that's what I get for not watching the press conference live though This post has been edited by FallingHeart on 1st June 2009 23:59 -------------------- "We're not tools of the government or anyone else. I only watched the Microsoft press conference today. It seemed really boring, nothing really good. I love the Bealtes, but I probably won't buy the game (too much $), and they only played FFXIII for like 5 seconds. I actually was interested in Modern Warfare however. It looks really good, from what they showed.

Might not live up. What? Schafer hasn't been involved at all in the past two monkey island games. Not only that, but Telltale games has already proved themselves to be the best modern creators of adventure games. They aren't even designing it as monkey island 5, which was the most reassuring part of that interview. They're not trying to hijack the series and are purposely leaving monkey island 5 open to be the final epic chapter of the series. I also realized after my post that they hadn't confirmed the games as being on XBLA, but here's a rumor that ties it in with the topic: http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/20/rumor-se...coming-to-xbla/ -------------------- "We're not tools of the government or anyone else. I was interested at the beginning because I'd heard good things about the first Alan Wake game for PC (which I think might have gotten cancelled? It was supposed to be about the stuff they reference as "Previously"), but the video made the gameplay look pretty stiff and generic to me. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Here's what Steven Spielberg had to say about Project Natal:
Quote (Steven Spielberg) There is technology now that recognises not just your thumb, it recognises your entire person. The technology knows who you are. The video games industry has not allowed us the opportunity to cry, because we were too busy putting our adrenalin rush into the controller, or wherever we swing our arm with a Wii controller to get a result. Because of that, there is no room for a video game to break your heart. We now have a little more room to be a little more emotional with Natal technology than we did before. So there you have it, Project Natal is a bad girlfriend simulator. It doesn't just recognise your thumb, at least, but it's going to make us cry and pull on our heart strings while we pour all our adrenaline into her sisters: the controller and Wiimote. What (the f) is happening to gaming? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8077369.stm -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. I don't know, even though that looks cool. Call me a traditionalist, but I just want the controller for paying. It's cool that they're pushing technology; now they need to push games. Some games will be great with that, but they need to keep the classic controller for others.

I know what you mean, but actually I like this kind of games, that plus the story seems like something I'll enjoy. For some reason when I was watching the Alan Wake trailer, it suddenly reminded me of Secret Window or Secret Garden, the one where Johnny Depp was a writer who was a bit 'LOCO' in the head? What about Dark Void? now that looks awesomely sweet! -------------------- PS3 tag: TipoDLuffy "...quite possibly the greatest game ever made" |
