1. Masamune (2) (2) - Frog is awesome. The masamune is awesome.

2. Dancer. (2) - I tried to pick an obscure class, and it went pretty well.

3. Arm wrestling. (3) - Random.

4. Thieves' town. (3) - I liked that place.

5. Argonian. (3) - Lizards, yay.

6. Light bowgun. (1) - Tried to pick something obscure, and I succeded!

7. Patrick Troughton. (2) - Random.

8. Italy. (4) - I felt patriotic.

9. Fire (10) - BAWWWWWWWWWWWW

8640 ;_;

Unless the next one comes in the next ten hours or so, I'll miss it.

1. Masamune (3) - I tried to go for something I thought would be obvious, but not too obvious to be picked, if that makes an sense. I was wrong.

2. Red Mage (2) - Can't really say much here, I just picked it cos its my favourite Final Fantasy character class.

3. G-Bike (3) - I wanted to go for one of the three simulators, but thought this would be less popular than the other two. Wrong.

4. Hyrule Castle (1) - Yay, a 1. I thought this would be too obvious for anyone else to want to pick it, and I was right.

5. Argonian (3) - The results here surprised me. No Dark elf, Khajiit or Redguard. I thought Argonian would be too weird to get picked, but then immediately blamed it on the fact it was more exotic. But saying that, Khajiit didn't get picked at all.

6. Gunlance (3) - No regrets, this is simply the most badass weapon I have seen in my life.

7. Christopher Eccleston (1) - To be honest, I was surprised this only got a 1. I thought he would be high alongside DT as a more recent one. Ah wel, I'm not complaining. happy.gif

8. England (1) - Another 1. I had to be patriotic for this question, simple as that.

Tiebreaker: Light (4) - Wow, Shadow was only picked once, which I found surprising seeing as its the most... interesting of the four.

Total: 162 + 4 = 166

Not a bad overall score, but not enough to win it.

Good round guys. I was a hairbreadth away from picking Fire on the last one...thought it would be funny to spite all the people I assumed would pick Shadow. =p

Brave Sword [2] - I just like the Brave Sword.

Blue Mage [4] - I felt Blue Mage was going to be passed over by most people--clearly I was wrong.

Mog House [2] - I've always felt "Mog House" was only 'technically' a game, and that no one would pick it for that reason.

Turtle Rock [4] - I just like Turtle Rock. Bad choice.

Breton [3] - Honestly, I don't know anything about the game and just picked the first one I saw.

Lance [4] - I don't know why I picked this one, but I picked wrong.

Jon Pertwee [1] - Finally, I sneak an answer past the rest of you.

Sweden [2] - I had just read a National Geographic article--not about Sweden mind you, but there was an article about Sweden in said issue--so Sweden is what I thought of when I saw the full listing of teams, hoping Sweden was 'obscure' enough.

Tie-breaker:
Water [2] - I assumed the majority would go for Shadow, and so I went with my next favorite, Water. All things considered, I did very well on the tie-breaker. (I was speechless for a moment after seeing the number of people who'd gone with fire.)

Final Score: 3072

My answers:

1. Dinoblade (2) I'm studying to be a paleontologist. I'm a dinosaur guy. I just had to go with the dinoblade.

2. Freelancer(1) I took the easy way out and chose Freelancer because they can equip EVERY type of armor. Apparently no one else realized that...

3. Arm Wrestling (3) Never played FFVII (though it's on my list), but Arm Wrestling just sounded like a ridiculous thing to be doing on a PlayStation.

4. Ice Palace (3) Chosen because that dungeon was a b**** to complete, even in the GBA version.

5. Nord (6) I'm a Minnesotan, so I just had to choose the race that represented our heritage, don' cha know.

6. Gunlance (3) Also never played this game. It just sounded badass. A lance that fires projectiles? FTW.

7. Peter Davison (1) Random choice here. Never seen the show in my life.

8. Mexico (2) No real reason behind this choice, just supporting our neighbors to the south.

9. Shadow (1) To quote Darth Vader: "You don't know the power of the Dark Side..."

Total = 649

I think I may be getting the hang of this "Rare Entries" thing! I'm up for another!!

This week we're going to try something a little different on CoN Rare Entries. I had so much fun watching the scores skyrocket last week and was so intrigued by the answers to the tiebreaker prompt, that I'm going to squeeze things down a little bit. This week, none of the prompts have more than 9 possible answers.

This time, prompts #1-4 were written by shotgunnova and prompts #5-8 were written by laszlow. Please send in your answers either in a PM to laszlow or in an email to epicpoet AT gmail DOT com before 12 noon on Friday, 29 May US Eastern Time (a little under four days from now). Again, I'm going to keep this little game going as long as I have at least 15 players for the round. So let's kick this pig!

1. FFT: Name an Equip [Weapon] support ability (6 answers)*

2. CT: Name an enemy found at the Hunting Grounds (6 answers)

3. FF7: Name an item/weapon/materia found in Ancient Forest (7 answers)

4. Name one of Rudy's ARMs from Wild Arms (8 answers)

5. Name a playable character from Seiken Densetsu III (6 answers)

6. Name one of the Robot Masters from Mega Man 2 (8 answers)

7. Name a feature film directed by Quentin Tarantino (8 answers)*

8. Name a published main-series book in the Song of Ice and Fire series of fantasy novels (4 answers)

Man, this round was fun. I deliberately set up the prompts to create high scores, and it WORKED. I couldn't be happier. The mean was about 48268 and the median was 20160.

But it didn't work for at least one person, our fearless leader Rangers51. The old man had the top score of the week, with 1280. Here's how he did it:

Rangers51's answers

1. Equip Spear (5)
2. Croaker / Prehistoric Frog 2 (1)
3. Slash-All (2)
4. Bazooka (1)
5. Charlotte (2)
6. Quick Man (4)
7. Jackie Brown (4)
8. A Clash of Kings (4)
Score: 1280

Second Place: laszlow (1920)
Third Place: FallingHeart (3360)
Fourth Place: Kane (4320)

1. FFT: Name an Equip [Weapon] support ability (6 answers)*

Distribution here was a little funky, mostly because no one picked Equip Sword. Really, Equip Sword is just about the only useful one of these abilities, and no one picks it. There was also one illegal entry.

Equip Spear (5)
Equip Knife (5)
Equip Axe (2)
Equip Gun (2)
Equip Crossbow (2)
Weapon Guard (16 points)

2. CT: Name an enemy found at the Hunting Grounds (6 answers)

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Nu was the biggest draw here. Otherwise nothing too weird. Congrats to R51 and Shotgunnova.

Nu (5)
Ion / Ion Cloud 1 (4)
Rain Frog / Prehistoric Frog 1 (3)
Amphibite / Prehistoric Frog 3 (3)
Croaker / Prehistoric Frog 2 (1)
Anion / Ion Cloud 2 (1)

3. FF7: Name an item/weapon/materia found in Ancient Forest (7 answers)

Three small traps, and then the rest. Nothing to see here, especially for fans of the Minerva Band. Congrats to FallingHeart.

Apocalypse (4)
Spring Gun Clip (4)
Elixir (4)
Typoon (2)
Slash-All (2)
Supershot ST (1)

4. Name one of Rudy's ARMs from Wild Arms (8 answers)

No one chose the Arch Smash, which is so powerful and expensive that it breaks the game if you powerlevel a bit. I guess that's why? Congrats to R51 and laszlow.

Twin Orbs (4)
Phaser (4)
Rocket Launcher (3)
Hand Cannon (2)
Prism Ray (2)
Wild Bunch (1)
Bazooka (1)

5. Name a playable character from Seiken Densetsu III (6 answers)

Shockingly, only one person chose Kevin, who for my money is the most powerful character in SD3, so much so that I deliberately avoid choosing him in recently playthroughs since he makes the game a little too easy. Also, small trap at Angela. Ah well, congrats to Fadien.

Angela (5)
Duran (3)
Hawkeye / Hawk (3)
Riesz / Lise (3)
Charlotte / Carlie (2)
Kevin (1)

6. Name one of the Robot Masters from Mega Man 2 (8 answers)

A pair missed opportunities here. No love for Crash Man or Heat Man, but congrats to leilong.

Air Man (4)
Quick Man (4)
Bubble Man (3)
Metal Man (3)
Wood Man (2)
Flash Man (1)

7. Name a feature film directed by Quentin Tarantino (8 answers)*

Not surprisingly, Kill Bill Volume 1 and Pulp Fiction were a pair of traps here. Surprisingly, no one chose Death Proof, Kill Bill Volume 2, or Reservoir Dogs. Congrats to laszlow.

Pulp Fiction (5)
Kill Bill Volume 1 (5)
Jackie Brown (4)
My Best Friend's Birthday (2)
Inglourious Basterds (1)

8. Name a published main-series book in the Song of Ice and Fire series of fantasy novels (4 answers)

Whenever we do one of those four-answer prompts, one of them takes over. Last week it was Fire, and this week it was A Game of Thrones. Somehow it worked out that I can just write down the four books in order. Congrats to dont chocobos rule? and Kane.

A Game of Thrones (7)
A Clash of Kings (4)
A Storm of Swords (4)
A Feast for Crows (2)

Well, that's all. I'll run this again if Josh is willing to write prompts with me, but the rule still goes that the first round under 15 users will be the last round we do. I might post my answers and reasoning later, and I encourage you to do the same.

My answers:

2. Nu (5)

3. Spring Gun Clip (4)

4. Phaser (4)

5. Hawkeye (3)

6. Quick Man (4)

7. Pulp Fiction (5)

8. A Storm of Swords (4)

Total: 96,000
If the mean was 48000 and the median was 20000, then my score must be one of the highest this round. I fell in ALL of the traps (except for question 8, but getting a 4 there isn't much consolation).

1. Hey! I like spears! And I was recently working on creating a character who wields one!
2. Rain Frog. I should have gone with Anion.
3. I think I took Apocalypse. Apparently, I should have gone with the Minerva Band.
4. I just thought Twin Orbs was a cool name. Also, that name reminds me of someone's criticisms of Natsuki's weapons in Mai-HiME--a pair of guns with spherical barrels. Well, this tactic worked last time with Dual Swords, but not this time.
5. Keep in mind, laszlow, that I've never played either the WA series nor SD3, so I can't choose based on that. Also, I suspect the Angela trap was due to the fanservice. tongue.gif
6. I thought Crash Man and Air Man would get lots of choosers due to those dang Hyadain videos. Oh well. Well, I was choosing between Bubble and Metal because the latter has the best weapon and the former has the best music. I chose Bubble.
7. I ALMOST CHOSE RESERVOIR DOGS.
8. Storm of Swords. No real reason; I'm not familiar with the series.

Given this round's mean and median scores, I'm actually quite proud of my 4320.

1. Equip Spear (5) -- Ouch! I had to pick the worst possible choice (barring illegal entries). I chose Equip Spear because I figured everyone would go for Sword, and because Spears are my next favorite weapon type. (I wish they were better in the game.)

2. Amphibite (3) -- I didn't have any particular methodology for this selection. I think it was simply the first legal entry I came upon.

3. Spring Gun Clip (4) -- I thought others would select a more prestigious item.

4. Hand Cannon (2) -- I figured, with its being the uppermost listing, that most people would select something other than their first choice.

5. Riesz/Lise (3) -- I'm not familiar with the game and simply chose what sounded cool. (I wonder if its being a homophone for a character in FFT had anything to do with it?)

6. Bubble Man (3) -- My selection here involves a long, arduous tale culminating in one of my old 2nd edition AD&D characters receiving a stone horse named Bubbles for his mighty efforts; suffice it to say, I like Bubbles.

7. My Best Friend's Birthday (2) -- I don't particularly care for any of his films and wasn't tempted to go for my 'favorite.' I just went with what I thought would be the most obscure.

8. A Feast for Crows (2) -- I think crow-related imagery is cool.

So, that's that. Congrats R51!

P.S. I am of course in for another round.

1. Equip Axe (2). Axes are my favorite weapons, regardless of how bad they are.

2. Ion Cloud #1 (4).

3. Typhoon summon (2). He is all I think of when I think of Ancient Forest. Him and the Apocalypse Sword.

4. Prism Laser (2).

5. Duran (3). Love that one form of his that gets Eruption. Duelist maybe?

6. Wood Man (2). No love for this guy.

7. Kill Bill (5). I was hoping that the obvious choice would be avoided.

8. A Game of Thrones (7). Ouch. Big misfire there.

Total score: 6720

That was an entertaining round. happy.gif

I actually had a strategy behind my picks this time and it worked out okay it seems. If we ever end the games I'll reveal the strategy but for now I'm going to try and use it again and maybe change it a little

Well, for each prompt you picked the one listed first in the given source. I don't think it's any better or worse than other strategies, but it's true that people are more likely to pick in the middle of a list than at the beginning or end in this kind of game.

1. Equip Spear - Botch. I figured people would go for swords and guns.
2. Ion - I knew that people would go for Nu, but other than that I didn't have any ideas. I got a little unlucky.
3. Apocalypse - I wasn't sure where people would go for this one, so I decided to go a little obvious. Wrong decision.
4. Wild Bunch - I went with a late game weapon that isn't very good but has a cool name. Hey, FallingHeart, for this prompt the last two answers were actually the best: one single and one zero.
5. Carlie - I went with the healer. No one goes for the healer. Except for me and Rangers51, apparently.
6. Mega Man 2 - I was positive that Metal Man, Quick Man, and possibly Wood Man would be the top scores. See laszlow be wrong.
7. Inglourious Basterds - it looks awesome/awful, and it was at the bottom of the list. A winner is me.
8. A Clash of Kings - I got lucky and decided not to pick A Game of Thrones.

I already have a set of prompts from El Presidente, so I'll finish organizing them and probably post them at noon tomorrow, with a likely due date the customary four days later.

My answers: I spent less than 5 minutes picking them out.

Equip Knife - I recall a Thief at Germinas Peak had this and a katana to go with it. In actual gameplay, this is the most useless one; I use Equip Sword the most.
Ion - Went with something short. Amazingly avoided the even shorter option.
SlashAll - I'm the other one who picked this
Rocket Launcher - Name recognition
Angela - Wanted to put down Angela and to heck with my score.
Metal Man - Weapon can practically replace the peashooter.
Kill Bill vol. 1 - Gave no thought to this at all.
A Storm of Swords - Has "Storm" in the title. Works as well as anything else for a quick decision. (never read the series)

Oh man, I really screwed that one up. I didn't have a clue about the first question, and didn't see the options at the top of the Support Ability page. I've never played FFT so I just thought 'hmm, this sounds like it has something to do with weapons...' and whacked it down. Whoopsie.

1. Weapon Guard (16)
2. Amphibite (3)
3. Apocalypse (4)
4. Prism Ray (2)
5. Riesz (3)
6. Quick Man (4)
7. Kill Bill Volume 1 (5)
8. A Storm of Swords (4)

Total = 92160

Wow.

Elixir (4)
Phaser (4)
Angela (5)
Wood Man (2)
Jackie Brown (4)
A Game of Thrones (7)

Total: 26880.

I knew Angela was a wrong choice. I know "A Game of Thrones" sounds too obscure. Why can't I listen to myself once in a while?

More please.

TOTAL: 28000 - I started alright, then picked the highest scorers for all the next questions. I think I've room for improvement.

Lmao! I got a 19200, AND I had a x1 answer (flash man)

I am the mold breaker! A high score and a x1 answer in a game where the scores were supposed to be intentionally high.

Your score wasn't high; it was actually below the median and mean scores. You fit the mold just fine.

I'm almost ready with the new batch of Rare Entries. They'll be up in the next fifteen minutes.

Here's your next round, hot off the presses. The regular players among you should know how it goes by now, and hopefully this fourth round has piqued some new interest as well. Playing is easy, takes five to ten minutes out of your week, there's some glory to be had! What's keeping all of you? If anyone still has questions at all about how the game works, then please PM me.

This week, we're sticking to the same format of 3 CoN 3 Gaming 2 Anything, with the odd-numbered prompts written by Rangers51 and the even-numbered prompts written by laszlow. Please PM laszlow or email epicpoet AT gmail DOT com before noon US Eastern Time on Thursday, May 4th to enter. Also, I want to try something a little different next week if I have enough interest, which you'll see explained in prompt number 900.

The Prompts

1. Name a boss in FF5 that is also an Esper in FF6*

2. Name one of the seven games that Caves of Narshe covers

3. Pick a spell (using the NES name) that the Knight can cast in FF1

4. Name a location from Banjo-Kazooie that has musical notes hidden within**

5. Name a class in Team Fortress 2

6. Name a weapon in Radiant Silvergun

7. Name a released single by the 1980's/1990's alt-pop band The Sundays

8. Name one of the twelve Classical Olympians from Greek myth***

900. (optional) This will not be part of your score, but if you wish you may submit 1 or 2 suggestions for prompts in the next Rare Entries game along with your answers for this round. Hopefully, if I get enough decent prompts that fit the format, we can have a set of prompts made from 8 different contributors! Remember, I'm going for higher numbers now, so I won't allow any prompts that have more than 13 possible answers.

*To find your choices, cross-reference the bosses in the enemies section in CoN's FF V coverage with the Esper section in CoN's FF VI coverage. There are seven possible answers, one of which is not actually in CoN's FF VI coverage ( ohmy.gif ).

**Anything listed as a "main world" is an acceptable answer.

***Any of the twelve listed in the source are acceptable answers. Other sources may list differently; note that under these rules Dionysus, Hades, and Heracles are NOT acceptable answers.

Recommended research sites:

Caves of Narshe
Banjo-Kazooie worlds
TF2 Classes
Radiant Silvergun weapons
The Sundays singles
Classical Olympians

Well, this was a really fun round for me to score. I'll talk about why later, but for now let's give ANOTHER round of applause for Rangers51, who took the day with a score of 384. The mean score was about 8121 and the median score was 2304. Here are Rangers51's winning answers (AGAIN):

Rangers51's Answers

1. Golem (2)
2. Final Fantasy V (2)
3. FOG (3)
4. Treasure Trove Cove (1)
5. Sniper (4)
6. Lightning Beams (2)
7. Love (4)
8. Apollo (1)
Score: 384

Second Place: laszlow (800 points)
Third Place: Gears (900 points)
Fifth Place (tie): Caesar and yomama (1080 points)

Well, this round was funny for a few reasons. First, Josh wins and I get second place, again. When I started entering scores, I was sure that it would be a two-horse race between Caesar and Gears. Both of them had a lot of 1s and 2s when I was more than half-done with scoring. Then, when I was entering my emailed entries, the scores for a trap in prompt #6 skyrocketed, and in the last six or seven entries their scores tripled from that one prompt alone. Whoops. And take a look at that prompt #7. Dayum.

1. Name a boss in FF5 that is also an Esper in FF6*

Pretty normal distribution here. Siren was a trap, and no one chose Shiva or Leviathan. Yes, Leviathan. When Josh edited by above post, he indicated that there was one secret answer and 7 total. By my count, there were 2 secrets and 10 total. Oh snap.

Siren (5)
Carbuncle (3)
Ifrit (2)
Golem (2)
Bahamut (2)
Ramuh (1)
Odin (1)
Gilgamesh (1)

2. Name one of the seven games that Caves of Narshe covers

WHY DID NO ONE CHOOSE FINAL FANTASY SEVEN.

Chrono Trigger (5)
Final Fantasy Tactics (4)
Final Fantasy VI (3)
Final Fantasy IV (2)
Final Fantasy V (2)
Final Fantasy I (1)

3. Pick a spell (using the NES name) that the Knight can cast in FF1

Nothing too weird here. I had to make a few NES-PS1 changes for no penalty.

AFIR (3)
FOG (3)
LAMP (3)
INVS (3)
CURE (2)
RUSE (1)
ALIT (1)
MUTE (1)

4. Name a location from Banjo-Kazooie that has musical notes hidden within**

Nine possible answers here, and we got nine of them. Who are you guys, and where is the real CoN crew?

Freezeezy Peak (4)
Bubblegloop Swamp (3)
Rusty Bucket Bay (2)
Gobi's Valley (2)
Clanker's Cavern (2)
Treasure Trove Cove (1)
Click Clock Wood (1)
Mad Monster Mansion (1)
Mumbo's Mountain (1)

5. Name a class in Team Fortress 2

No one chose the Soldier, but otherwise this prompt's results were eerily similar to those of the previous prompt.

Sniper (4)
Spy (3)
Medic (2)
Demoman (2)
Engineer (2)
Scout (2)
Pyro (1)
Heavy (1)

6. Name a weapon in Radiant Silvergun

Here's the prompt that crushed the dreams of Gears and Caesar. Look at all those twos... and that six. At least we got all seven possible answers....

Side Bombs (6)
Radiant Sword (2)
Rear Vulcans (2)
Lightning Beams (2)
Homing Missiles (2)
Vulcan Cannon (2)
Homing Laser (1)

7. Name a released single by the 1980's/1990's alt-pop band The Sundays

This was the weirdest of all. Nobody chose "Can't Be Sure" or "Here's Where the Story Ends," which is weird enough when there are only six prompts. On top of that, the other four possible answers were all either 4s or 5s. Are they really traps when everyone gets trapped?

Summertime (5)
Goodbye (4)
Cry (4)
Love (4)

8. Name one of the twelve Classical Olympians from Greek myth***

Only eight of the twelve possible answers were picked, and the most popular answer was the sex goddess. Welcome back, CoN crew.

Aphrodite (4)
Demeter (3)
Hephaestus (3)
Zeus (2)
Artemis (2)
Apollo (1)
Athena (1)
Hermes (1)

So that's all. I'll go through all the answers to prompt #900 I received, but it's not over yet. If you have any other ideas, or even if you want to submit something when you didn't play this round, then just send me a PM or an email. I'll post the next round Sunday morning, but the only players that are guaranteed one prompt each are myself and Rangers51.

1. Carbuncle (3) - I remember he was really hard to beat in V, and I never really used him in VI, aside from learning spells.

2. Chrono Trigger (5) - Chosen because I just got it last week (DS). I have been playing and loving it ever since then.

3. AFIR (3) - No real reason here.

4. Gobi's Valley (2) - Random choice.

5. Engineer (2) - His is my favorite "Meet the Class" video.

6. Side Bombs (6) - GOOD LORD!!!

7. Cry (4) - Another random choice.

8. Hephaestus/Vulcan (3) - Can't go wrong with those green-blooded hobgoblins (Star Trek reference, for those who don't know).

Total: 12,960
I seem to be getting really high scores. Am I doing it right?

1) Carbuncle (3) - *shrug* dunno why.

2) FF IV (2) - My favorite. I thought I'd show my love.

3) Invis1 (3) - No reason, just because.

4) Clanker's Cavern (2)

5) Engineer (2) - I loved them in the Classic, haven't played 2.

6) Lightning Beams (2) - I was drawn to Side Bombs... I even typed it in to my message, then changed my mind at the last second.

7) Love (4) - Was drawn to it, because I want to see the Cirque du soleil show of the same name

8) Aphrodite (4) - and I was doing so well up to here.... *sigh* What can I say. I'm a guy, I think about sex. Game over.

Total points = 2304 (Damn Aphrodite.....)

1. Carbuncle (3) - As my brother said when he beat him: "The hell?!? I beat a monster and I get a pokemon?!?". I thought he was obscure enough. I was wrong.

2. Final Fantasy 4 (2) - My favourite in this lineup. Lol @ nobody answering FF7

3. FOG (3) - a useful spell. As much as that.

4. Freezeezy Peak (4) - Just randomly picked.

5. Pyro (1) - Devastating class and everybody needs at least one 1. tongue.gif

6. Rear Vulcans (2) - I shoot behind me when I retreat.

7. Goodbye (4) - Random.

8. Hephaestus (3) - I took the meanest and ugliest of the bunch. He backfired.

1728 is a good year, I guess.
