Now, as promised, here is the thread for the third Caves of Narshe Rare Entries Game. Playing is easy: take a look at the following eight prompts and come up with a correct answer to each one. Then send me your eight answers either with a PM or with an email to epicpoet AT gmail DOT com before noon on Friday, May 15th; if you email me, include your forum name so I know who's talking. I'll be at graduation ceremonies for most of Saturday and Sunday, so I really want to finish the scoring by Friday evening. There will be no prizes given this round, but if a lot of people play then I might add prizes for the second round.

And as a final note: remember that the goal is to make your answers as unique as possible. Sometimes that means giving an obscure entry, but other times that means giving a high-exposure entry because others may avoid those on purpose. If you have any questions about the game or how scoring works, then ask me in a PM or post in the thread of Rare Entries II. And last, if you give an incorrect answer to any prompt, then your score for that prompt is [# of players - 1], which does tremendous damage to your chances of success. But enough talk, have at you!

The Prompts

1. Name a playable class in Final Fantasy Tactics that can equip robes

2. Name a playable class in Diablo, Diablo II, Diablo III, or expansions to any of those games*

3. Name a Triple Tech in Chrono Trigger

4. Name a character that joins your party at some point in Lunar: Silver Star Story

5. Name an Esper in Final Fantasy VI that teaches at least one offensive (black magic) spell

6. Name a non-upgraded weapon from the original Ratchet & Clank**

7. Name any populated town or castle in Final Fantasy IV***

8. Name a playable character in Street Fighter III: Third Strike****

*Bard and Archivist are not acceptable answers

**This can be any weapon that is not a gold weapon

***For the purpose of this prompt, I will accept any area in the SNES version of the game that has a shop in it, but not Kokkol's Smithy. Castle Damcyan is not an acceptable answer for this reason.

****This includes all characters other than Gill, for a total of 19 possible answers

Recommended research sites:
Caves of Narshe
Diablo classes
Lunar characters
Ratchet & Clank weapons
Street Fighter III characters

So that's all. This thread will be locked until scoring is finished, after which I'll post the results and unlock the thread.

To someone on staff with mod powers: could you please sticky this and unsticky the Rare Entries II thread?

Well, we had exactly 19 competitors this time, which isn't as much as I'd like. Still, I'd be up for another round if you guys are; let me know in this here thread.

But enough about the future, right now let's congratulate Wizwurm for his resounding victory today, with a minuscule 16 beating out a pair tying for second at 36. Here's Wizwurm's winning entry, followed by my usual stats and banter on each prompt.

Wizwurm's answers

1. Holy Knight (1)
2. Barbarian (2)
3. Delta Force (1)
4. Mia (2)
5. Shiva (1)
6. Devastator (2)
7. Mysidia (2)
8. Ken (1)

Second Place (tie): Kappa the Imp and Silver_Zombie (36)
Fourth Place: SilverMaduin (54)

The median score was 216 and the mean score was about 461. Those numbers are both far too low for my liking, but I had some sizable categories and only nineteen players. Ah well.

1. Name a playable class in Final Fantasy Tactics that can equip robes

The traditional first prompt is one of several mostly-trap-free prompts from this round. Large number of possible entries, waaaay too many singles.

Wizard (3)
Summoner (3)
Priest (2)
Time Mage (2)
Calculator (1)
Samurai (1)
Geomancer (1)
Princess (1)
Mediator (1)
Divine Knight (1)
Hell Knight (1)
Holy Knight (1)
Knight (1)

2. Name a playable class in Diablo, Diablo II, Diablo III, or expansions to any of those games*

The trickiest thing to do would be to submit Monk - the extra class from Sierra Entertainment's Diablo: Hellfire expansion. But no one went for it, and instead stuck with the less crafty options. Witch Doctor was one of the few fours of the competition, and Monk, Assassin, and Paladin were the only options not selected.

Witch Doctor (4)
Necromancer (3)
Druid (3)
Amazon (2)
Barbarian (2)
Wizard (1)
Rogue (1)
Sorcerer (1)
Warrior (1)
Sorceress (1)

3. Name a Triple Tech in Chrono Trigger

There were 15 possible answers here, and 19 of us only got through 10. Great minds think alike, right?

Twister (3)
Poyozo Dance (3)
Grand Dream (3)
Final Kick (2)
Lifelife (2)
Arc Impulse (2)
Triple Raid (1)
Delta Force (1)
3D Attack (1)
Spin Strike (1)

4. Name a character that joins your party at some point in Lunar: Silver Star Story

Very nice distribution here. Amazingly, the only character that went unselected was Alex, the story's main protagonist. Go team.

Ramus (3)
Kyle (3)
Luna (3)
Nash (2)
Jessica (2)
Mia (2)
Ghaleon (1)
Nall (1)
Tempest (1)
Laike (1)

5. Name an Esper in Final Fantasy VI that teaches at least one offensive (black magic) spell

Lots of answers to choose from here, in the neighborhood of 18-22. One tricky mofo realized that I didn't specify which version of the game and went with Leviathan from the GBA edition. But why's Terrato so popular while Ifrit, Bahamut, Odin, and Crusader are all absent?

Terrato (4)
Phantom (3)
Bismark (3)
Siren (2)
Fenrir (2)
Shiva (1)
Leviathan (1)
Maduin (1)
Tritoch (1)
Shoat (1)

6. Name a non-upgraded weapon from the original Ratchet & Clank**

Again, low and reasonable distribution here. I mostly included this category so I could vote for the Glove of Doom, which is one of my favorite weapons in any game ever.

Visibomb Gun (3)
Glove of Doom (2)
Devastator (2)
Tesla Claw (2)
Suck Cannon (2)
Blaster (2)
R.Y.N.O. (1)
Taunter (1)
Bomb Glove (1)
Pyrocitor (1)
Walloper (1)
Decoy Glove (1)

7. Name any populated town or castle in Final Fantasy IV***

This was the category that provided the fewest singles. Otherwise, nothing much to report.

Tomra (3)
Kaipo (2)
Fabul (2)
Baron (2)
Village of Mist (2)
Hummingway Cave (2)
Mysidia (2)
Mithril (2)
Agart (1)
Toroia (1)

8. Name a playable character in Street Fighter III: Third Strike****

Blanka's in Street Fighter II and IV, but you can't just average II and IV to make III. Otherwise, the distribution was pretty even, but take note: the winner of the competition picked Ken, and neither Ryu nor Chun-Li was chosen by anyone. Sometimes it's a good play to go for the easy answer. And of hilarious note: the only two 3s were Sean and Q, who are both way-bottom tier.

Q (3)
Sean (3)
Oro (2)
Remy (2)
Urien (1)
Hugo (1)
Makoto (1)
Ibuki (1)
Yun (1)
Akuma (1)
Dudley (1)
Ken (1)
Blanka (illegal entry)

So that's all. Thanks for playing, everyone! If I run another round, it will probably start up on Monday or Tuesday of next week.

1. Calculator [1] - first class I encountered while browsing the guide on the site.
2. Necromancer [3] - My favourite class out of any Diablo game
3. Twister [3] - I just picked a random.
4. Kyle [3] - There was some reasoning behind this, can't remember, though.
5. Maduin [1] - Well it'd be weird if I picked any other answer, where I could take my avvy.
6. R.Y.N.O. [1] - one of the few non-upgradeables.
7. Kaipo [2] - Rural, also, you recruit Rydia there.
8. Makoto [1] - If I'd have picked my fave charachter, Ken, it'd have been a [2], but with either Makoto or Twelve (that is, answering "Twelve" would've yielded the same result), who are my favourite SF3 exclusive chars, I got [1].

More, please? That is, more rounds and more people, please.

Oh, yes.

1. Summoner (3) - I just took a random class, really.
2. Necromancer (3) - Same. Random.
3. Triple Raid (1) - heart.gif My favorite triple tech
4. Laike (1) - I wanted to take someone obscure, and he seemed pretty cool.
5. Terrato (4) - Midgårdsormen!
6. Devastator (2) - Random.
7. Baron (2) - Random.
8. Oro (2) - I saw someone mentioning him on a forum earlirer, so I just took him.

mine were

Knight (1)
Amazon (2)
3D Attack (1)
Nash (2)
Bismarck (3)
Visibomb (3)
Troia (1)
Blanka - i thought it said street fighter ii, not iii. whoops

also with the ratchet and clank one, the devastator, glove of doom, Tesla Claw, suck cannon, blaster, bomb glove, pyrocitor, and decoy glove all have gold weapons, thus are all upgradeable, or did i miss something?

1. Mediator (1) - I saw the name, thought the class must be able to wear robes, checked and put there. No particular reason.
2. Warrior (1) - because I knew nobody would pick the simplest answer ;)
3. Grand Dream (3) - I don't remember ever using this technique (maybe when I was playing a Spanish rom translation, but I really can't recall), so I chose. I also like the name.
4. Luna (3) - random choice.
5. Tritoch (1) - I was tempted to choose Testper for this one, but I chose Tritoch, because he was close to Testper on the CoN's list of Espers.
6. Blaster (2) - I thought that the simplest answer is the best answer, so I chose the simplest name.
7. Agart (1) - Anybody remembers that town?
8. Remy (2) - I would pick Ken, but I thought that SMad will choose him, so I just picked a guy who looked weird.

Yay, I'm second :) And I'm in for moar.

Those are allowed. The condition was "that is not a gold weapon." Thus, the Devastator, Glove of Doom, etc. are okay, but the Gold Devastator, Gold Glove of Doom, etc. are not.

Second? Totally not expected, probably the best I'll ever do at this game. Maybe it just works out better the less I think about it.

1. Geomancer (Random)
2. Sorceress (Figured it was tricky... as opposed to "Sorcerer)
3. Grand Dream (Random)
4. Nash (First guy I remembered)
5. Shoat (Random)
6. Decoy Glove (Random)
7. Kaipo (Random)
8. Sean (The only one I really thought about. Wanted to do Chun-li, thought it was too obvious. Wanted to do a new character, thought they'd be too popular. Figured my best option was the scrubbiest shoto to avoid Ryu/Ken popularity and aim for obscurity. Fail.)

Had fun with this game, if nothing else it really wanted me to play all of these titles.

Well, I attempted to pick the most obscure (obviously) entries possible, and failed. I picked the worst possible answers on half of the prompts.

I'm definitely down for another round.

I got rocked in the later few questions. Go Terrato!

This is always really fun, though. Thanks for starting it back up again, Lasz! I'm game for more, as always.

My answers:

1. Summoner
2. Druid
3. Grand Dream
4. Kyle
5. Siren
6. Walloper
7. Hummingway Cave
8. Q (Chosen mostly because of John DeLancie's character in Star Trek TNG, DS9 and Voyager.)

They were mostly random, except for Siren (I though I might have a chance, since she only teaches one black spell, which can be learned from multiple other espers) and Hummingway Cave (It's on the friggin MOON!! And I could never finish the Namingway sub-quest in FFIV DS (couldn't find Rainbow Jelly)).

I would be up for another round. That was fun!

I just picked stuff based on lulz value.

1. Wizard, I think.
2. Witch Doctor, because of the song.
3. Arc Impulse (my first impulse, haha)
4. Luna, I think. Also, I don't think the starting character counts because he doesn't technically join your party. At least, I'd think; I haven't actually played the game myself.
5. Bismark because I like how it conveniently teaches all basic black magic. And of course no one picked Bahamut and Crusader because they're too "obvious" choices.
6. Suck Cannon. Because of the name.
7. Mysidia.
8. Q, because I thought it/he reminded me of the Invisible Man enemy from Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin.

If you run the game again, lasz, I think there'll be less clumping toward answers that "no one likes".

Wow, I wasn't expecting that, especially since I've never played the large majority of games there, so I didn't know what was a common or obscure choice. Shame I have to win the one game with no prize though tongue.gif . But still great nonetheless. This was fun, I'm definitely up for another round.

OK, I'll bite.

1. Wizard (3) - random magic-using class. I should have gone obscure for this one.

2. Wizard (1) - I figured that at least two people would go for Monk, the most obscure entry (I was wrong), and I also figured that people would primarily stick to Diablo II classes (I was right, but also wrong since WD was the most popular choice). I went with a generic-sounding name that was near the bottom of the research site I suggested.

3. Twister (3) - I picked the Triple Tech of my favorite party in the game. Mistake.

4. Ghaleon (1) - he's only in your party very briefly, and he was far down the list of playable characters in the site I put out.

5. Phantom (3) - I went with an Esper more well-known for effect magic, but that was a mistake. I should have gone obvious.

6. Glove of Doom (2) - My favorite weapon in the game. I had to vote for this. No regrets.

7. Tomra (3) - no idea why this podunk was so popular.

8. Urien (1) - one of my least favorite matchups in the game. I usually play as Ryu, Ken, or Dudley, but I went a little obscure for this prompt and got lucky.

Score: 162. I consider it a success if I get below the median. Success!

As for next round, I'll put it up on Monday morning. Later if it takes me awhile to receive Wizwurm's prompts.

Little-known fact: I nearly picked Bad Impulse for my triple tech. Seriously, though pun noted shortly thereafter.

Seems like the winning entries are always either far too common, for people who know them well, or way, way, way obscure (such as Pippi in Mother 1).

Well, I shot myself in the foot waaaaaay too early in this one.

I don't play Final Fantasy Tactics, but I DO play Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2, so I picked the easiset and most common job to equip robes... you know... a White Mage. pinch.gif

I seriously want to call mulligans on that one... but it won't come to fruition...

Stupid Priests... dry.gif

I don't remember how a wrong answer scores, but since I don't even see it as an illegal answer, I suppose my accidental lack of subject on the email didn't even get me counted. My heart really wasn't in this one, but I'm all in for the next one! flag-blue.gif

You didn't give an incorrect answer. Priests are called White Mages in the PSP version of the game, and for the purposes of Rare Entries the two terms are synonyms. You were one of the two Priest answers. I think one person gave Black Mage as an answer as well, but I just put them down as a Wizard.

And for the record, if you give an illegal entry, then your score for that entry is the number of participants minus 1. Dont chocobos rule? received a score of 18 for his Blanka entry.

EDIT: actually, now that I check your email and my spreadsheet, you submitted Black Mage, not White Mage, and received a score of 3 for prompt #1.

lol... Awesome, I can't even remember my own answers tongue.gif . Like I said... my heart wasn't in this one, but I did remember using the term Mage.

Like I said, all in for the next one however. thumbup.gif

OK, here comes the second round of Rare Entries. I was a little disappointed by last week's turnout, and as a result I'll only hold a round 3 if there are at least 15 participants. That should be manageable right? Right. Wizum's victory last round granted him the opportunity to contribute to this round, and as a result the odd-numbered prompts were written by Wizwum and the even-numbered prompts were written by laszlow.

But the rules are the same as always, and so are the methods of submission; all participants must either send a PM to laszlow containing your prompts or send an email to epicpoet AT gmail DOT com before noon US Eastern Time on Thursday, May 21st. That gives you about three and a half days, which should be more than enough to get 15 players.

And one more thing: to change things up a bit, this will be the first CoN Rare Entries that is not exclusively about video games (*gasp!*). Instead of 4 CoN prompts and 4 non-CoN gaming prompts, I'm going to try a new distribution of 3 CoN prompts, 3 non-CoN gaming prompts, and 2 non-gaming prompts. We'll see how this one goes.

The Prompts

1. Name a weapon for Frog in Chrono Trigger DS

2. Name a job from Final Fantasy V that can equip robes*

3. Name a mini-game that can be played in Gold Saucer's Wonder Square in Final Fantasy VII

4. Name a dungeon in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

5. Name a playable race in The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

6. Name a weapon type in Monster Hunter 1 or 2**

7. Name an actor who has played The Doctor in the Doctor Who television series***

8. Name an international side that has made at least 10 appearances in the FIFA World Cup

*See what I did there!? Use the Black Robe or White Robe as an example.

**All weapon types listed on the given webpage are fine except for the Slasher Axe

***This entry can only include the eleven "main series" Doctors

Recommended research sites:

Caves of Narshe
A Link to the Past dungeons
Morrowind Races
Monster Hunter weapons
Actors who have portrayed The Doctor
World Cup teams

Ladies and gentlemen (or perhaps only gentlemen; not sure if any ladies are following the game), we have a tie. A big tie, with THREE CoN users all with the best score of 72. In a field of 18 players, these three were the only three with scores under 100. The mean score was about 1220 and the median score was 864, all thanks in large part to four or five traps appearing from within the prompts.

But I am not satisfied. I don't want a three-way tie. I want a winner. So, in a Rare Entries first, I am creating a massive tiebreaker free-for-all. I'm not going to say which three players are in the tie, because I want as large a pool as possible. For the tiebreaker, you have until 24 hours from now to send in the name of one of the four magic types from Chrono Trigger. Here are your choices:

Fire
Water
Light (or Lightning)
Shadow

Send one of those four to me before midnight tomorrow night, US Eastern Time. For the three people in the tiebreaker, the number of entries will be added to their score. For example, if I'm in the tie, and my entry is selected by myself and three others (four total), then my score becomes 72 + 4 = 76. The winner will still be the person with the lowest score, and hopefully we won't have another tie on our hands. If you don't send in an entry before tomorrow night, then you receive a score of 17 for the tiebreaker, guaranteeing yourself a loss.

So please, if you want a chance at victory, then send me one last prompt. Fire, Water, Light, or Shadow. I'm going to keep this thread open this time, but PLEASE do not say what your answer is for this new prompt. You can discuss the game, discuss the prompts from this week, discuss this predicament, fine. Just don't say your answer for this new prompt or you it will count as an illegal entry.

I will post the results Friday, just after midnight. I was going to yesterday just after midnight before I noticed that there was a three-way tie.

Plus, I'll be busy all this weekend, so I wouldn't be able to work on these until Monday morning anyway.

SPECIAL NOTE: in my scorekeeping yesterday, it looks like I made an error and accidentally gave one of the three finalists a 1 when he should have gotten a 2. But the tie was still there, so this tiebreaker was NOT a waste of time. The fool with 144 as his score, and third place, is me, laszlow.

I know that there's still time before the tiebreaker deadline, but 17 out of 18 people have submitted entries already, including both of the finalists. This round was certainly higher-scoring than the last, probably because all of the Lance-wielding Italian Nord Blue Magi. Also, Fire.

But before all that, let's congratulate shotgunnova for his win in this unprecedented Rare Entries tiebreaking win! He was lucky enough not to pick Fire for the tiebreaking round, unlike dont chocobos rule?, the other finalist. Here are Shotgun's scores and the prompt with distro.

shotgunnova's answers

1. Demonslayer (1)
2. Chemist (2)
3. Wonder Catcher (2)
4. Thieves' Town (3)
5. Wood Elf (1)
6. Hunting Horn (3)
7. Paul McGann (2)
8. Serbia (1)
Bonus: Light (4)
Score: 72+4 = 76

1. Name a weapon for Frog in Chrono Trigger DS

Pretty normal distribution here, although I suppose it was the prompt with the fewest singles. Lot of missed-out chances on singles, too.

Iron Sword (3)
Masamune (3)
Masamune II (2)
Radiant Blade (2)
Bronze Sword (2)
Dinoblade (2)
Brave Sword (2)
Smiter's Blade (1)
Demonslayer (1)

2. Name a job from Final Fantasy V that can equip robes*

This perversion of the traditional robe-wearing prompt was actually pretty normal, with several singles and the game's first small trap at Blue Mage. The big question, though: why didn't anyone say Black Mage?

Blue Mage (4)
Geomancer (3)
Time Mage (2)
Dancer (2)
Red Mage (2)
Chemist (2)
White Mage (1)
Freelancer (1)
Mime (1)

3. Name a mini-game that can be played in Gold Saucer's Wonder Square in Final Fantasy VII

Lots of treys here. The funny part about this category is that the first three entries on my spreadsheet (my own, plus the first two I received) were the only 1s in the category. How about that.

Super Dunk (3)
Arm Wrestling (3)
G-Bike (3)
Mog House (2)
3D Battler (2)
Wonder Catcher (2)
Torpedo Attack (1)
Snowboarding (1)
Crystal Fortune (1)

4. Name a dungeon in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Small trap at Turtle Rock, which is understandable since it's a memorable dungeon with an amusing name. Otherwise pretty normal.

Turtle Rock (4)
Thieves' Town (3)
Ice Palace (3)
Water Gate Dungeon (2)
Misery Mire (2)
East Palace (1)
Desert Palace (1)
Ganon's Tower (1)
Hyrule Castle (1)

5. Name a playable race in The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

Here's where the scores started to drive up. In this category, you either got a 6, a 3, or a 1. There was no other option.

Nord (6)
Breton (3)
Argonian (3)
Orc (3)
High Elf (1)
Imperial (1)
Wood Elf (1)

6. Name a weapon type in Monster Hunter 1 or 2**

Another amusing category - if you picked any type of sword or any ranged weapon, then you got a 1. Otherwise, you got a 3 or a 4. Ah well... I guess it's all forgivable, since Monster Hunter is one game where no weapon truly sucks.

Lance (4)
Hammer (3)
Hunting Horn (3)
Gunlance (3)
Great Sword (1)
Bow (1)
Long Sword (1)
Light Bowgun (1)
Dual Swords (1)

7. Name an actor who has played The Doctor in the Doctor Who television series***

Really good distribution here, with no traps and lots of low scores. All 10 possible answers were chosen at least once!

David Tennant (3)
William Hartnell (2)
Patrick Troughton (2)
Paul McGann (2)
Colin Baker (2)
Tom Baker (2)
Sylvester McCoy (2)
Christopher Eccleston (1)
Jon Pertwee (1)
Peter Davison (1)

8. Name an international side that has made at least 10 appearances in the FIFA World Cup

This final prompt had one small trap at Italy, and also the most singles in this round. Very nice overall, but no love for Germany?

Italy (4)
Belgium (3)
Sweden (2)
Mexico (2)
Spain (1)
France (1)
England (1)
Brazil (1)
Uruguay (1)
Argentina (1)
Serbia (1)

TIEBREAKER: Name one of the four types of magic in Chrono Trigger

This is possibly the strangest distribution I have ever seen in a Rare Entries game. More than half of the players picked one answer in a one-out-of-four choice. No, FBM, fire doesn't always win.

Fire (10)
Light (4)
Water (2)
Shadow (1)
No answer (1)

So that's all. 18 isn't a bad number of players, so I can run this again, probably on Monday.

Damn, I'm GREAT at hitting traps.

1. Masamune: It's just my favorite. And it would have been interestingly the same if I had picked Masamune II (3 becomes 2, 2 becomes 3). I thought people would go for M2 and really unnoted crap like Iron Sword. I was right about those two. I wasn't right about M1.
2. Blue mage: just my favorite class, barring Mimic. Apparently, for other players, it's the scrappy class, as suggested by these results. I was considering Mimic and Bare.
3. 3D Battler. Not too bad here, but average.
4. Turtle Rock. It's got my favorite intro sequence. And I thought it was too high-profile to pick.
5. Orc. I don't know why. But I picked a race that I thought might be less picked, simply. I am unfamiliar with the series, so I can't say much.
6. Dual Swords: Somehow I got a 1 here. I thought the name was cool. I haven't played MH 1 or 2 before either.
7. Will Hartnell. I have no clue which Doctor actors are more/less popular, so I just picked the first randomly. Well, for what it's worth, had I picked anyone else, I'd still have gotten a 2 at least.
8. Italy. I should at least have picked Brazil or Uruguay...how did I fall into this trap??

Tiebreaker: I wanted to choose Light anyway. Or Fire. I thought Water would get bombed. I was so wrong.

So, in conclusion, I'm simply moving at the speed of the pack, psychologically. Bleh.
