Quote (BlitzSage) Of course, but then again, Terra is a half-esper she should be one of the best!, Celes was a top general of the empire she should be one of the best!, Strago is of magi decent, he should be one of the best!, Shadow is a ninja, ninjas are the best!, and I could go on.1. Yes, he's old, but it still takes him almost a minute to use Sword Tech. Old, yes, but he should still be one of the best, not THE slowest. Also you forget than in JRPG-land little girls can kick your butt many times over and seasoned generals suck because they are older than thirty. Unfair and unreasonable, yes, but that's sadly the case many times. Quote (BlitzSage) Welcome to Cornelia! =D2. Most of what I said about Sabin is just ranting. I want him to use swords because... well... I like swords. Can't help it. They're awesome. Quote (BlitzSage) Except his weapon and armor selection aren't that good. But I'm thinking a little change would be good storyline-wise. Gameplay-wise he's top tier already. Quote (BlitzSage) Wait, wha? Why? How? I respect your opinion, but I'm going to have to disagree entirely in here, of course, that's also just my opinion. I don't mind him being dumb or brash at the beginning, but I think his character could develope into an intelligent leader of the group. I adore Sabin, he is one of my favorites, and I like him just because of that. He is simple minded, not dumb. Yes he is brash, but that's part of his charm, he was always like that and I think he's not going to stop anytime soon. Somewhere I read that Sabin was like he said, a “bear†and I can't find a better world, he is all tough and strong but at the same time he has a favorite tea and flowers. Sabin was born a leader yet he refused it, he choose his freedom instead, why? He hated all of the political mumbo-jumbo. And... I'm going with the advance version of the script, because in this aspect is so much better, from the ending: Sabin: It's not like I wanted to dump all that responsibility on you. I knew you'd look out for the kingdom. I wanted to be able to look out for you. That's why I went off to become stronger. This guy spent years training so he could protect his brother, Isn't that just cute, cute, adorable? AHEM, sorry for the fangirl rant., I'll stop now. But the leader of the group?, All the time I was waiting for Terra to stop being insecure and lead the group, like a good “main characterâ€(open for debate) and she did, even if for a little while, she leaded the confrontation with Kefka and leaded the scape out of the tower. And there's also Celes, she started to reunite the group after the Floating Continent. So why Sabin? Quote (BlitzSage) Uniqueness is achieved via the personal skills and customization via espers and relics. While I like my characters to be special, I'm also a sucker for customization, so it's the perfect balance for me, something between FF4 and FF5. 3. I don't think everyone should use magic. That would 1) make it unique, and 2) be truthful to the storyline, since magic supposedly is extinct at the beginning of the game. What about the whole Esper World arc?, what would be the point of the Magitek facility, of Cid research? Kefka killing all those espers? The whole point was to seize the espers power, your team stands a chance without Terra (their last ray of hope) because they had the espers help. I'll repeat myself, magic was the key to winning the war. -------------------- "Love, and do what you will" Saint Augustine |

Two answers, since I know not how to quote.
Sandyboots: I know I'm a weird player. But why do you say so? Gigantuar: I didn't knew that at the time. I was more worried about saving the rest of a party from a gruesome, gruesome death. And I really don't like fixed dice. Takes leveling. -------------------- Snooping as usual, I see? |

Quote (Toransu Kuja) You can use the “quote†that is on the upper right corner of every post. There's also a button in the "code buttons". And you can use [QUOTE] Message here [ /QUOTE] (Just remove the space between the “[“ and the “/â€.Two answers, since I know not how to quote. Sandyboots: I know I'm a weird player. But why do you say so? Well, is that I'm used to see a different kind of “tier listâ€. Like: Terra/Celes – The Minerva is broken, they can wield the Illumina and their magic is not bad. The general consensus is that morph>runic, because while runic is useful in some bosses, morph can be of use in all. Mog/Gau/Edgar/Locke – Locke has the Valiant knife and can wield the Illumina as can Edgar. Edgar and Mog benefit the most from the dragoon set-up. Mog and Gau have the snow muffler = max defense. This is assuming that you bothered on getting some nice rages for Gau, if not, move him a tier down. Shadow/Setzer/Sabin/Relm/Strago – Shadow has throw and Interceptor. Setzer has fixed dice. Sabin has great strength, sadly his most powerful blitzes use magic, which is pretty low for him so he needs those esper bonus. Relm has the highest natural magic score in the game, she's basically a mini Terra/Celes but without Minerva. Strago has decent magic and lores. All of them are below the others mainly because of their equipment. Cyan – Sword-tech is s-l-o-w. Average armor selection, one of the worst magic scores in the game. You could make a case for the Kazekiri but it's too random like Gau rages, the difference is that Gau can act as a defensive unit and Cyan can´t. Gogo – The jack of all trades, but he can't equip espers. So his stats stay where they are, no room for improvement, except the natural hp/mp and damage with levels. Umaro – He can't benefit from esper bonus, you can't control him and you can't change his weapons or armor. Keep in mind that this isn't my opinion, but the junction of what I commonly find, this is not exact and I probably messed up around somewhere but it gives you an idea. -------------------- "Love, and do what you will" Saint Augustine |

Why? I don't have to have a reason, this is a rant. Rants don't have to have any facts, but I'll give you some just because. 1) We don't need leaders associating with Terrorists. If he's hiding a secret alliance with the rebels, what else is he not telling us? 2) I'm pretty sure that Edgar probably pulled a Clinton once or twice, if you know what I mean (actually, strike that, I respect him for that). But either way, you can't run a kingdom while chasing tail all time time, and that leads to # 3) He didn't run the kingdom. I'll use the Letterman quote about Bush. I wish they would've gave the Figaro twins a bigger part. That's my real rant. I took this part out. Why do I have to apologize? Sabin is better. Edgar - His personality is the one that matches mine the closest, and is almost completely accurate. Gameplay wise, if you take all the characters that can use the huge endgame swords (Illumina) and level them to 50 without esper upgrades (which is a massive pain in the backside, but worth it to win a bet.) Edgar has the highest Vigor. (Think Terra, Celes Edgar, Locke, but excluding Cyan)
Gau - Was my favorite as a kid, mainly because I was the "wild child" of all my friends. Never wore shoes when I could help it, so on and so forth. Plus, assuming you go through the game without stopping to level to 80+, his capabilities are amazing, with little cost. I personally get Mog after I get Gau, and with Moogle Charm, run straight up through the fanatics tower and kill the White Dragon. With 2 Hero Rings, his phys and mag pwr is nice, and just supplement the two attacks (Fight and Pearl) with Esper stat increases, and he rocks. Relm - She was just fun to play around with. Her dialogue with Ultros, priceless. Honestly my least favorite character had to be Locke, only because he was either useless or overpowered. Low level, he was junk, but if you slap Bahamut on him, gain 15-20 levels, and put on Genji Glove/Offering and Atma Weapon/Valiant Knife, ugh... 8 attacks at 9k plus... Was only fun for farming elixirs off of Ultros As an aside, and this is again saying you are going through the game with out powerleveling(pl'ing), then Umaro is a great character. With some decent relics, he hits hard, and because the game auto attacks asap, his damage is always maximum. Take the time to get his rage ring and blizzard orb, and he is very versitile. Or, if you want raw single target damage, swap the blizzard orb for a gauntlet, and watch him embarrass Sabin in melee dmg -------------------- think you're a true rp dork - try it live action shifted lands |

Why doesnt anyone like Terra?
She may be whiny or whatever, but equipped with the genji glove, offering, illumina and atma weapon shes almost unstoppable. Also considering she is half esper! And her magic is just as powerful as Celes. Gau is useless and gathering all his rages is sooo tedious ![]() Sabin's blitzes are my favorite special skill out of everyone! Quote (Bilbo T Baggins) That was one of my first rants that i LIKED. Kudos to you Sandyboots...Awesome name btw.... ;_; Thank you, it's the first time someone appreciates my rantings. It is often agreed that Terra is the most powerful character in the game. Besides Terra and Celes switch in the whiny department with the WOR. Add me to the list of people that likes Terra. A strong female “protagonist†= awesome. Quote (BlitzSage) Sandyboots, don't speak anymore. You too, Baggins. I agree somewhat, but have you ever heard of a reluctant leader? Why like Sabin and not accept him the way he is? The Sabin I know would never take the crown, the Sabin I know has favorite flowers, tea and dishes, the Sabin I know is a kick ass martial artist that loves and respects his big brother, he is simple minded and punches the hell out of anybody that makes him angry. That's the Sabin I know and love, and I wouldn't have him any other way. The fact Sabin doesn't fit the king role isn't a bad thing, it's just part of his character, he's just too pure and brash to be a diplomat. Likewise, Edgar would utterly fail as a monk. Listen to the some of the dialogue that was retooled makes him sound like an udder idiot. That's my peeve man. Why try to change a character that works the way he is? He makes me laugh when he says something that's not clever, it's cute and part of the fun. It's like if I were saying that I don't like Edgar going around hitting on every woman he sees, and that I would have written him differently. Yes, it sometimes bothers me that he is such a womanizer, but no way in hell would I change him, that's part of what makes him what he is, he wouldn't be the same otherwise. In fact that was what called my attention at first. Think about it from this point: Flaws add flavor to a character, perfect ones are IMHO boring. Take away Sabin's s-m-r-t-s and Edgar's flirting and what do you have left? Two awesome kind and good looking guys that can do no wrong, and they are twins! And royalty! OMG!1!! Terra's insecurity, Cyan's anger, Locke's klept...err...treasure mania? This traits make the characters more human, more believable. What I'm trying to say is that I'm thankful that Sabin is a meathead, and don't believe it's bad wrap at all. Everybody has their qualities and defects. Quote (BlitzSage) Perhaps I took it too far the opposite way, since I want to be a writer/filmmaker/storyteller when I start my career (I graduate Tues. btw) Congratulations and good luck! Quote (Sandyboots @ 23rd May 2009 20:16) What I'm trying to say is that I'm thankful that Sabin is a meathead, and don't believe it's bad wrap at all. Everybody has their qualities and defects. I understand his flaws, but in the original he was brash, but he was witty and at least he knew what was going on... Quote (GBA Version) Locke: Terra... Terra: I'll do it. Sabin: I'm not entirely sure I understand the plan...but what the hey! This sounds like it'll be fun! Quote (SNES Version) Locke: Terra... Terra: I'll do it! Sabin: What nonsense! You sound as if you're enjoying this! In the original version, he makes a comment that seems to poke fun at the others for showing over excitement (which can be picked up through the use of Terra'suse of exclamation points). While the new translation makes him sound completely stupid. Now, I understand that all of them have faults, but come on, Terra's insecurity? Sabin's idiocy? He is supposed to be a martial arts-trained hero of the world. Not to mention that they completely change his demeanor (in the original, they act overly excited. This changed and it makes him sound like the dumbest one in the room, and most in there aren't even named characters!) Quote (Sandyboots) Can we just agree that the Figaro bros rule for whatever reason we have and drop it? Yes, completely. I don't want to argue, especially if we go into the same industry, lol. Truth be told, I've been arguing the same b.s. since I started CoN, and I'm just as tired of it. This post has been edited by BlitzSage on 24th May 2009 01:47 -------------------- |

You do realize that the GBA script is closer to the Japanese original?
I recommend reading Lina's Darkstar fan-translation at Icy Brian's, there are some interesting stuff in there, it adds another dimension to everyone. I wish I knew japanese so I didn't miss all this, but alas, I'm too lazy. http://www.icyforums.com/index.php?showtopic=4401&st=0 An sneak peak: Quote (Lina Darkstart) ––The first lost-in-translation bit is another part of Sabin's character development. When Terra's deciding whether or not to join the cause: SABIN: You can trust [Edgar], TERRA... But don't you DARE tell him I said that! --- Mash: I think you can trust him too. Oop, but don't tell him I said that-- I'd get embarassed. What the verb "to get embarassed," also "to feel bashful," does here is add another point to the idea that Sabin's really the "younger" brother, the subordinate to Edgar. It adds a little bit of cute to Sabin's overall character. It's like Sabin and Mash are totally different people. I think I get you now, I stayed with the idea of Mash in my head while you talk about Woolsey's Sabin, which is totally valid, personally I like his Kefka better. Like you said, I guess it's pointless to argue about, because I don't know how to speak Japanese, so I guess I don't even know how his character was really supposed to be. I don't know.

All arguments are pointless, but yeah, when we are practically arguing about two “different†characters is too much.
Like I said, I don't know Japanese either, but I like to search every bit of information I can, and build something out of all the sources available. You're missing things sticking with only one perspective. I feel like Lina did a wonderful job with her translation, and her comments are also fun to read. There's also this one: http://members.fortunecity.com/kwhazit/trans/ff6/index.html It has a very nice format, unfortunately it isn't complete. There are others, but some are just literal translation and miss the localization process, something that Woolsey did very well, but his version is not without flaws. And also, if you want to learn more about Sabin, and if you haven't done so please check the poor topic: http://www.cavesofnarshe.com/forums/ipb/in...opic=10914&st=0 I feel like I'm the only one watching over it now. -------------------- "Love, and do what you will" Saint Augustine |

I have something of an obsession with chivalry, honor, knights, samurai, bushido etc. so Cyan has always been a favorite of mine, that, and I always found him just 'fun' to have in your party which I know puts me in a small minority but nevertheless I found the whole strategy involved in sequencing the other characters and their attacks right in order to make time for him to charge up his sword techs to be very fun, somewhat challenging and ultimately very rewarding.
Shadow/Clyde is of course another favorite of mine, as is Locke, but I just have an obsession with the dark 'lost soul' type characters for some reason; always have. Another reason I like Shadow/Clyde in particular is because due to how loose and mysterious his past/origin is it leaves a lot of room for the imagination and for writing; s'why I love using him as a character in my fanfic so much. Locke too since so many of his actions in the game point to the possibility of him being 'unbalanced' and I'm fascinated by psychosis' in all of their forms; especially so, being a bit of a crazy person myself xP. And, of course, Kefka; I have a whole manifesto on why I adamantly believe he is the greatest villain in anything, ever; I could write an essay on why I adore Kefka but I'm not going to put any of you through that xP, suffice to say; he personifies villainous awesomeness as far as I'm concerned. -------------------- |

Quote (Manoftyr @ 4th June 2009 20:33) I have something of an obsession with chivalry, honor, knights, samurai, bushido etc. Me too. I love the Middle Ages. I think that's why I like FF. I think what makes me love FFVI is that it is anachronistic. You have Cyan, the honarable warrior. And then you have the steampunk Vector and Imperial soldiers. It's just a glorious mix of fantasy elements. Quote That's for the Kefka forum! I have no set fav of the game really...Just characters that i never use.....like Cyan...I so hate getting beat on while i wait for any one of his more powerful skills to power up. Later in the game I use Gogo ALOT as he can have anyone's skills and there by be three characters at once. I always make my 3 "Generals" in the final battle as follows:
Terra....that morph ability makes her unstoppable with a genji glove and a black belt equipped. Edgar....Lets face it....That chainsaw is awsome Relm.....Genji glove and a black belt...That and a wide selection of spells...Celes or Sabin could fill this slot for me the same way... |

Quote (laszlow @ 19th February 2009 18:50) My favorite characters in the game - regarding storyline and personality, not necessarily gameplay - are Cyan, Terra, Celes, and Sabin. In gameplay terms you can probably replace Cyan with Gau for my favorite party in the game. It's disappointing, but Cyan is one of the worst characters in battle, unless you have get all glitchy and psycho. Actually cyan is overkill in power, but in order to do so you have to level him up with bismark and also you need to kill rexsoul. Rexsoul is in doma castle in the world of ruins and appears in a dream of sorts and once you kill him you get quadra slice wich is the most powerfull tech in the game in my opinion. Bum's rush is also extremely powerfull for sabim, but hard to use on a keyboard,in fact all of sabims techs are really hard to pull off on a keyboard. The worse i think are:umaro and setzer. Mugu mugu NOO!!! no more mugu mugu please!!! he's a awesom character but getting the right slot can be hard. -------------------- We are stardust. Our bodies are made from the guts of exploding stars. This is not correct. After you leave Cyan's Dream he learns Cleave, which is perhaps the most useless of all the Sword Techs. It takes ages to charge up and does no damage against bosses. Quadra Slice, the level 7 tech, is learned naturally by him at level 44. However, after completing this side quest, any sword techs that are not unlocked will be unlocked. This is likely what happened in your case. -------------------- Is PJ |

Cyan - Probably my overall favorite character. Just seemed like a badarse all around + cool name.
Edgar - Ladies man + awesome attacks with "tools" like a drill and saw. Sabin - Black-sheep little brother of Edgar + Kung Fu master = awesome character. Gets negative marks for his blister inducing Blitz moves. Shadow - A ninja - need I say more? LOL |

I like to get as many espers as possible let every character master them and then choose my party based on abilities attack power and other more arbitrary reasons such as
Locke will always go with Celes Shadow would stay with Relm and Strago too Sabin Cyan and Gau would hang out Mog and Umaro because Umaro would want to stay with his Boss Setzer and Edgar they just seem to be the types to get on swimingly Terra and Gogo neither of them talk very much My favourite party is Sabin those blitzes were awesome Celes for her Runic Ability Locke because he was savage could steal and would always follow Celes Cyan because He has a mustache and called everyone Thou... I did say my reasons were arbitrary It would be REALLY cool if you could get Kefka or someone like him on the team Also anything cute/fuzzy/small cute and fuzzy generally MURDERS SAVAGELY AND HE DANCES MOG IS THE BOMB!Buuuuuut I can never make space for him in my party as I HATEHATEHATEHATE Umaro This post has been edited by R8.50 Mango on 26th June 2009 13:36 -------------------- Since I advertise CoN there I think it's only fair that I advertise The Wiki here. |
