First things first, Spoiler Alert for Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Trigger, and Chrono Cross.
Hello, I'm new here, and with this being a FF related site, I thought I might as well throw out some FF related observations. Now, I'm a Chrono Trigger, FF7, and Chrono Cross veteran. I'm also a sponge for useless detail, and as such, I couldn't help but notice the similarities between the extraterrestrial villains of these games: Lavos and Jenova. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the latter was intentionally based on the former. <DISCLAIMER>Now, just to be clear, I'm DEFINATELY not trying to start any false rumors or draw any conclusions. I've never worked for Square, so everything I'm about to mention is pure speculation based on misplaced attention to detail.</DISCLAIMER> Lavos (Chrono saga) and Jenova (FF7 Compilation) - A Comparison: - Both are extraterrestrial - Both arrived on their victim planets alone as opposed to in a mass invasion. - Ecologically, both are hyper-invasive life forms. - Both are extremely complex parasites with god-like powers. - Both seem to "feed" by sucking the life out of native species over vast intervals of time (this is stated outright in reference to Lavos, for JENOVA it's not really clear, but plausible). - Both are composed of cells that can survive independently from the main body. This is very obvious in the case of JENOVA, whose cells survived even though the main body was brain dead (correct me if I'm wrong). For Lavos, we have the Frozen Flame which is featured prominently in Chrono Cross. - Both are capable of enhancing the abilities of humans through contact. With Lavos this effect is extreme in that the creature's mere presence effected human evolution within the CT universe. In the case of JENOVA, the effect is limited to individuals treated with the creature's cells (Sephiroth, Hojo, SOLDIER, etc.) but the influence of JENOVA's cells on these individuals causes them to be superhuman (excepting Geostigma). - These effects on the human mind and body seem to be mechanisms to ensure the survival of the creature's species. This is deliberate in the case of Lavos, for JENOVA, this mechanism seems to be coded within JENOVA's DNA, causing Sephiroth and his clones to pursue the propagation of the extraterrestrial species in lieu of the original creature (JENOVA). - The cells of both creatures are capable of integrating with those of humans, even if the creature proper is "dead" (in Chrono Cross, the body of Lavos assimilates Schala). - Both creatures are capable of being overpowered of manipulated by their "hosts", this is more obvious in the case of JENOVA in that Sephiroth is able to overpower JENOVA's ambient will and use the creature for his own purposes. However, he may be influenced by JENOVA's instincts. JENOVA 's cells do make extreme attempts to return to the creature's body proper throughout the course of the FF7 compilation. -Both Lavos and JENOVA seem to follow the same predestined behavioral pattern: Crash on planet, infect planet, use planet to propagate own species, repeat. If I got any details wrong or misconstrued anything, correct me. Otherwise, penny for your thoughts? This post has been edited by EverboundVenvel on 6th April 2009 05:53 |

Wow... I didn't even realize how similar they were. This is almost as eye-opening as when I realized that Aerith's theme and oh maria were the same song! This is yet further proof that Squenix owns a time machine, with which they transport to the future to copy things that FF7 did...
