A friend of a friend of mine who works in a large electronic store here in the U.K. happens to have a new discontinued Xbox 360 console and one pad for £50! They can't sell it on the shelf and nobody who works there wants to buy it. I think the PS2 had been out for about six years before it was that cheap. Obviously I'm going to buy it. I'm missing out on just too many games right now.

Is that the cheapest price anybody's heard of, or is there an even more hilarious undersell out there?

Does anybody else feel that £50 is the correct value for a games console? We don't really need them, do we? They're making enough money as it is.

Surely that 360 is one of the "Arcade" versions that doesn't do HDMI or come with a hard drive? Either way, it is a pretty good buy and you can at least add the hard drive later.

Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? Or perhaps buying a really good looking shirt?

He's dropping it round today. Can't wait.

Yes it's the one with no memory to speak of. I think the Arcade has 256mb of internal memory, but this one, I'm assured, has not a byte. I'm going to see what my options are. If a 64mb memory stick can hold all the saves I'll ever make then I'll go with that instead. If not, I'll see about the smallest hard drive available. It would be a shame to miss all the downloadable content, so I will pick up a HDD at some point. Does anyone have any good ideas regarding this? I hear a PS3 can use third-party memory.

What I really like the sound of is: if I get the red rings and the console packs in, I still have a warranty with Microsoft, so apparently they'll send me the next best system rather than another discontinued one. This is just hearsay from the shop, but I'm inclined to believe them.

I'm leaving in a small while to pick up an extra pad, a memory unit of some sort and some games. This evening is going to be two-player co-op 'til the cows come home.

Edit
I bought a 256mb stick for £12. Overall, I've spent £108. That's a console, 256mb stick, Gears of War, BioShock, one wireless pad and one wired pad. I'm the biggest critic of GoW but I can't deny that for £10 it's a great two player co-op game. The shop I was in had a 20gb console and one pad for £120. Even that is a good price. I think I've been really lucky here.
