Now, I have an enormous SF bias, but I'll see if I can work around it and look at this objectively.
Guile is the The Man With Two Moves, with only the Flash Kick and Sonic Boom in his arsenal but a dangerous defensive character. Jax is essentially a hard puncher/grappler with the ability to fire missiles out of his cyborg arms. Guile needs EX meter to fire a double Sonic Boom, but Jax can fire double missiles at will; this might be the edge Jax needs to rush in on Guile and get a command throw or combo in. Jax wins. E. Honda and Bo Rai Cho is a very different matchup. BRC's drunken fist is meant to keep the opponent on their toes, and has a number of combo-able close range and feinting moves. E. Honda isn't very subtle at all, with his powerful splash, headbutt, throw, and hundred hand slap meant to pound opponents into the ground. The winner here is a little obvious - in both Super Turbo and SF IV, Honda's one of the game's most powerful characters, but has a particular weakness for fireball traps. Bo Rai Cho has no fireballs other than a ground puke and a large hitbox for oicho throws and hand slaps. E. Honda wins. Chun-Li has a crazy arsenal of pokes and combos, with that dangerous lightning leg (via thunder thighs) her signature. Kitana's a fast, jumpy, unpredictable character, with a powerful impale projectile. This matchup is hard to predict, but the fact that Kitana's projectile can only be used once and the fact that Chun-Li's overpowering thighs are tireless makes this one go the SF route again. Chun-Li wins. Cammy vs. Mileena is kind of hilarious. They're both assassin clones of more-famous characters from their series, but Cammy does it with her legs and Mileena does it with her blades. They're both regarded as low-tier characters, but Cammy's new special throws and improved means for getting out of fireball traps make her better than she used to be. Her damage is still low, and Mileena doesn't usually have that problem in MK Deception, IIRC. Mileena wins. This last matchup is interesting, but I'm going to end it quickly - Blanka lives up to his monstrous nature in SF IV. His Beast Rolls are safer, his hops and slides are solid, and his Ultra is devastating. I don't care about no acid spits. Blanka wins. Okay, I think this somehow got more balanced when you said "no weapons"
Guile vs. Jax And actually, the impossibility of taking Jax's strongest weapon away gives him the fight: without his cybernetic arms (that is, with a couple of real ones) it'd be a fair fight that I'd have to think through, but with them Jax wins and no questions have to be asked. Jax E. Honda vs. Bo Rai Cho While I kind of fell out with MK after 4, I did some checking on his gameplay and he's kinda only got two moves two him. And since I doubt Honda would get caught on the vomit puddle, Bo Rai Cho's assault has no way to break through and he hets Hundred Hands Slapped tille he dies from it. E.Honda Chun Li vs. Kitana Chun-li wins. No contest. To beat Chun-li you have to be Daigo. Is Kitana Daigo? No, she's not, so she gets a face full of feet. And bleeds. A lot. Chun-li Cammy vs. Mileena I have always had more trouble with people who play as Cammy than those who play as Chun-li. With Cammy, I usually have trouble knowing where she is, so I can't defend, counterattack or anything. Mileena on the other hands, was to me always on the same level as Kitana, maybe more badass story-wise, but gameplay-wise pretty much the same threat. So, mathematically: Cammy > Chun-li, Mileena = Kitana, Chun-li > Kitana. Ergo, Cammy > Mileena Cammy Blanka vs. Reptile And here we have a rare case of a Mortal Kombat character, that I actually like. Still, this fight is pretty much even when it comes to damage dealing, but Blanka simply can take more of that. And to show Reptile, what a great fight it's been, he'll bite his face off for the fatality. So, Jimmy wins. Blanka 4:1 victory to Street Fighter When I saw SF vs MK, I kind of expected a 2-on-2 of Ken&Ryu vs Scorpion&Sub-Zero. Damn, that'd be a good one. -------------------- "I fell off the mountain of words at around the 10,000ft mark. Quote (SilverMaduin @ 26th February 2009 04:54) When I saw SF vs MK, I kind of expected a 2-on-2 of Ken&Ryu vs Scorpion&Sub-Zero. Damn, that'd be a good one. Though not in the same week, those fights have essentially been done at one point. Thus the non-inclusion of the "main characters", so to speak, if anyone else was curious about it as well. -------------------- "When I turn the page The corner bends into the perfect dog ear As if the words knew I'd need them again But at the time, I didn't see it." ~"This Ain't a Surfin' Movie" - Minus the Bear |

Jax -
Jax has the mechanical arms and the race card. That's just unfair. E. Honda - Bo Rai Cho is completely incapable. I really don't understand how he could possibly beat anyone, especially if that competitor is twice his size. Bo Rai Cho may be big, but E Honda is much bigger. Also, all that alcohol can't be good for one's endourance. Bo Rai Cho pukes, passes out from the alcohol, E. Honda rocks his world, and then Bo Rai Cho pukes and passes out agian. Chun Li - Chun Li is actually useful, whereas Kitana seems to just be... well, another assembly line girl character. I didn't find her very challenging at all, and I don't think Chun Li will either. Mileena - She's just darn annoying, and I could totally see her ripping off that veil-type thingy and sinking her makata teeth into Cammy. Reptile - Even though I traditionally rely on his sword moves, I have reptile winning. While I don't think that Reptile is too powerful, he's pretty quick and he can become invisibe: that definately puts him over Blanka. And so, in a 3-2 victory, the Mortal Kombat series wins the day. Could it be because of the K in Kombat? -------------------- Currently Playing : Final Fantasy V Most Recently Beat : Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Favorite Game : Final Fantasy X The newest CoNcast is up! The results of last week's mega-fight.
A tall order of whoop-ass was delivered frothy cold to the losers. But along with the individual fights, which group managed to scrape up victory in numbers? Let's go to the score board. Voter Distribution CoN Crew 5 - 1, Jax 4 - 2, Honda 6 - 0, Chun Li 5 - 1, Mileena 4 - 2, Blanka Facebookies 4 - 0, Jax 3 - 1, Honda 3 - 2, Kitana 2 - 2, Cammy/Mileena 3 - 1, Reptile Read AIM Fire! 8 - 3, Jax 6 - 2, Honda 7 - 5, Chun Li 6 - 6, Cammy/Mileena 8 - 3, Blanka Team Target 4 - 0, Jax 4 - 0, Honda 3 - 1, Chun Li 2 - 2, Cammy/Mileena 3 - 1, Blanka GoogleFight +1 Jax +1 E. Honda +1 Chun Li +1 Cammy +1 Blanka Totals 22 - 4, Jax 18 - 5, E. Honda 19 - 9, Chun Li 15 - 12, Mileena 17 - 9, Blanka With 3 wins to 2, the winner of last week was Street Fighter. Back to normal, and in a classy way. This week's fight is a classic. Sure, it's been debated before. But not in the forum of WNF. Two vintage Nintendo heroines will duel for supremacy of the true Princess of Nintendo. Who you got? In the RED Corner... unassuming guardian of the Triforce... ![]() Princess Zelda Where you've seen her: Only the long-standing eponymous game series... Duh. Object of Link's heart for ageless decades, Zelda repeatedly finds herself held against her will by Ganon. Despite her apparent damsel-in-distress syndrome, she does try to fight it. In arguably the most popular arc of the series Ocarina of Time, it's shown that Zelda, with the aid of the Triforce of Wisdom, obtained powers of magic and transformation (into the super agile Shiek). Damsel, maybe. But a fighting damsel, at least. And her opponent, in the BLUE corner ... the prize of plumbers and giant spiked turtles alike... ![]() Princess Peach Toadstool Where you've seen her: Always the divine ending to the Super Mario series. If Zelda is a damsel in distress, then Peach is one ten-fold. But like Zelda, Peach isn't nearly as helpless now as she was in the "old days". We saw her skills in Super Smash Brothers. And her skill in battle was proven in Mario RPG. Can anyone really defend against the vicious parasol attack? Peach isn't defenseless, and she can easily dominate a fight if she gets the time. How this fight came to be: It all started with one awkward dinner party at the Mushroom Kingdom.... Battle Tactics: The Triforce of Wisdom is Zelda's best friend. She can use its powers of magic to her advantage. Transforming into Shiek boosts her agility and comes with pretty nifty martial arts techniques. Sweet innocent Peach has an arsenal at her disposal. Her famous parasol packs a wallop, and the frying pan is a real bitch to get smacked with too. She'll want to use the flotation technique to avoid some of the quicker attacks by Shiek. Timing in everything. Setting: Super Mario 3, World 5 --- Sky World! This really isn't much of a fight. If we're only going by main series, Peach has absolutely no toughness. And even if the spin-offs and the Peach games count, it really is like matching up Link and Mario.

Quote (Sabin @ 6th March 2009 17:39) Peach is a top-tier monster in Melee due to her crazy-awesome down-smash and general survivability thanks to her jumps and floats. However, Sheik is usually considered better than Peach, and one of the best characters in the game. Zelda's usually considered a non-factor. That youtube video is just one match - I wouldn't use one match as evidence. And if you go to Brawl, then I really have no idea. I know that Meta-Knight and Snake are considered the best two characters, and the winners of the two UVA Brawl tournaments (the highest-level matches I've seen) were a DeDeDe and a Game&Watch. No idea how good Peach, Sheik, or Zelda are in that one. -------------------- |

The results of last week's princess punch-out...
Zelda had the triforce... and in the end, I suppose not even Peach's parasol could stand a chance. Voter Distribution CoN Crew: 9 - 1, Zelda LiveJournal: 2 - 1, Peach Facebookies: 5 - 0, Zelda Ready AIM Fire: 13 - 3, Zelda Team Target: 6 - 0, Zelda Google Fight: +1, Zelda ... but just barely. Since it's been added, this is the closest in results I've seen. Total: 35 - 6 The big winner... Princess Zelda. No wonder the series is named after her and not Link. Zelda is the first combatant this year to clear 30 votes... and how. 35 might be the highest number total for one fighter all year. But we shall see if anyone else can top it. But onto this week. And as many people seemed to think that last week's one sided, I hope this week proves otherwise. Here goes... In the RED Corner.... ...the unquestioned king of the dragons and self-proclaimed God of the summons ![]() Bahamut Who's to argue his status? He is a beast, literally figuratively and metaphorically. His scales are nigh impenetrable by human weapons. By nature, dragons are highly intelligent and tactile. As king, his intellect dwarfs any regular human's. Let's not forget about his super nova inducing flare attacks. With vicious attacks and keen tendencies, Bahamut is a killing machine in every sense of the word. And his opponent... in the BLUE corner... wielder of a sacred blade riding atop a six-legged horse... ![]() Odin The legendary rider emerges. Armed with the mythical blade and wielded by a set of quick hands, Odin is the epitome of the slayer. He bounds onto the scene, and as quickly as he comes, his enemies lay in peaces. Just one slap of his Zantetsuken brings instant carnage. But as we've all seen, the blade can't dice all of his enemies up. Luckily, he carries with him a gunge lance as a backup. Fully prepared is this mythical warrior. Where you've seen them: At most times, the ultimate and penultimate summons in the Final Fantasy series. Battle Tactics: Bahamut is well insulated for defense. The scales of his hide are exceedingly hard to penetrate, so good luck getting to do any major damage. The gift of flight will be a big key for the dragon as well. His Mega Flare is his primary weapon, but look out for his talons as a secondary attack. Odin isn't as grounded as expected though. As IX has taught us, Odin and his magical horse have airborne prowess as well. His opponent may have agility and impenetrable scales going for him, but the Zantetsuken isn't a normal weapon. It's very well that it could end up doing the job. It'll just be up to Odin to catch up to his adversary and avoid the mass of fire. Exceptions: We've all played it, so we all know--Odin can't cleave all his opponents that he's summoned for. The major opponents can safely evade the severing attack. I think we can safely assume that Bahamut can do the same. And while they are both "summons", this fight should be based on their melee style battling. No bounding in and out of the battlefield or whatnot. It's one on one with normal fighting proponents. Setting: An open field on a rainy day ... trust me, lot's of room is going to be needed. -------------------- "When I turn the page The corner bends into the perfect dog ear As if the words knew I'd need them again But at the time, I didn't see it." ~"This Ain't a Surfin' Movie" - Minus the Bear |

I refuse to play by your rules. I'm going to have the mythological versions of the two monsters fight one another.
Bahamut - depending on who you ask, Bahamut is either a giant fish, a giant dragon, or a giant turtle. Fish is what you hear most often. Found in certain pre-Islam Middle Eastern mythologies (I want to say the Assyrians worshipped him, but that's probably wrong...), Bahamut was a giant beast that carried the entirety of the world on its back, floating along to an unknown, godly agenda. Odin is much more well-documented. The king of the Aesir race of gods from Norse myth, Odin is a god of war and wisdom armed with the never-missing spear Gungnir and a complete knowledge of the rune magics (obtained by hanging himself from Yggdrasil, the world tree) . Odin rides the eight-legged steed Sleipnir, commands an enormous host of Einherjar warriors, and the support of virtually every important god and goddess in existence. So here we have two entirely different beings at work. Odin is a powerhouse, both physically and magically, and commands all the forces of good in all the world. Bahamut is more of a primeval god; rather than physical prowess or an army of warriors, he's a part of the world itself! If these two beings clashed, we'd have something very different than Ragnarok. I dunno what it would be, except maybe kind of strange. I'm going to hand this one to Odin because I don't know nearly as much about Bahamut. Does he have the ability to fight back? Is he even aware that he is being attacked? In any case, he likely doesn't have Odin's firepower, and would probably just admit defeat and join Odin's side rather than bother with the whole affair. Quote (Sabin @ 12th March 2009 02:49) Setting: An open field on a rainy day ... trust me, lot's of room is going to be needed. And this, ladies and gentlemen, is what gives the match away. If it's raining, Bahamut can easiliy stir up the weather to make it a thunderstorm. He can then out-maneuver Odin, so that lightning hits him. One thunderbolt may not be enough to kill him, but it'll shock and stun him, giving Bahamut time to rip him apart. Copied from the LJ for the purposes of stating my argument somewhere else
See, this is rough. I can't even decide. On the one hand, Bahamut can nuke entire areas of land, and that's hard to avoid, on the other, Odin can throw that lance pretttty far with, what I imagine, is some degree of accuracy, and as LOTR has taught us, a dragon's underbelly, which is exposed when flying, is necessarily his weak spot. On those grounds, I give it to Odin, although Bahamut is infinitely more useful and a better summon. Now, Odin VS Leviathan- that'd be a neat matchup. I'm with Lasz on this one. -------------------- If you've been mod-o-fied, It's an illusion, and you're in-between. Quote If it's raining, Bahamut can easiliy stir up the weather to make it a thunderstorm. I disagree. Bahamut is an elemental summon, and a fire summon at that. The rain gives him a great disadvantage. If we consider that Odin evolves into Raiden in FF6, and Raiden is a thunder god, it would be pure stupidity to create a thunderstorm given the conditions. Apart from that, Odin is quick enough to avoid all the Bahamut's magic attacks and to strike precisely at the dragon's weak point. Bahamut is way slower because of his huge body, making him an easy target. Odin wins. -------------------- You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one... |

In no game is Bahamut ever regarded as having the ability to control the weather, from what I remember, so I feel SMad is wrong on this account. However, he is non-elemental and not fire-elemental as SZ said. So from the way I see it, the weather does not play into Bahamut's abilities.
However, it may play into how Odin fights. It really depends. Is the rain heavy or light? Is it a thunderstorm, light scatters of lightning, or no lightning at all? I assume the facts from all FFs about each character play into this. So, I quote from the Eidolon Library: Quote (FFIV - DS Translation) "Odin the Reaver..." "Only once has he known defeat, and that only when lightning struck his fearsome blade." It is only when lightning strikes his blade was Odin defeated. So it's not that Odin is necessarily vulnerable to the element of lightning, just that he has a lightning rod in his hands. But, this is a fight with Bahamut. Zantetsuken only really works on the "commoners" of the animal/monster kingdom. In this battle, Odin would be wielding the Gungnir. Which takes lightning out of the equation. Bahamut has a lot more raw power than Odin does. But, Odin is wielding the Gungnir. And you know he's a badass with it; look at that quote again. He was undefeated until the Zantetsuken acted as a lightning rod. He uses both weapons and both very well. Also, Bahamut is a dragon. From all my video games and fantasy novels, there are two weapons in particular that are effective against dragons without the need for enhancement/enchantment. They are effective against dragons just by being the types of weapons they are: arrows and spears. In this battle, Odin is facing down Bahamut with Gungnir, a spear he knows how to use. Verdict: Odin -------------------- "I had to write four novels before they let me write comic books." -Brad Meltzer |

Although I was very close to choosing Odin for the reasons above, I'm going to go with Bahamut.
Agility and speed are the big deciders in fights I believe. Although Odin is relatively fast in comparison to humans and can fly, Bahamut is much faster overall. If Odin was on the ground then Bahamut could dive-bomb him from every direction or pull the rider from his horse. The only defence Odin has is the gunge lance. Because of his immense speed and the weather conditions, however, I think Bahamut can avoid this if it's thrown: therefore Odin has a fairly small field of attack. If the gunge lance, or even an instant-kill Zantetsuken, is used as a melee weapon Bahamut will be able to avoid his swings altogether and use his mega flare from afar. In terms of FFIX, Bahamut is a clear winner. I just couldn't imagine Odin being able to match his pace and firepower. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. I'm giving this win to Odin. Basically, it has all been said already, but his spear Gungnir is famed for never missing its target. Ever. Basically, Bahamut takes to the skies, Odin throws at his belly, game over. Spear connects and Bahamut is slain. Zantetsuken is ineffective, but really who needs it when you're that good with a spear?
Bahamut could perhaps have an advantage here if he fires first, but we've all seen the animations of these two. Odin appears, cuts everybody up, and peaces out. He doesn't dawdle. Bahamut likes to make the big dramatic flashy scenes, sometimes flying out of the Earth's atmosphere to charge up megaflare. So this is how I picture the matchup going: they both spawn wherever they are fighting. Bahamut takes to the skies. Odin picks up Gungnir. Bahamut gathers some energy by his mouth, Odin drives the spear through his chest. Done. We could argue that what happened to Odin in FFVIII basically means that he is no stronger than a mere piddly human with a sharp sword, whereas Bahamut remains intact throughout the entire story. However, FFVIII is just so bad that I don't even consider it canon. Odin is way better than that. Odin's got this, even though he IS weak vs. lightning (right, Rydia?). -------------------- Is PJ |

Quote (Silver_Zombie @ 12th March 2009 23:19) Bahamut is an elemental summon, and a fire summon at that. No. Just no. Any and all of my arguments in this fight aside, no. This has nowhere been mentioned. It is not true. It's a lie. No Bahamut has EVER been a fire summon. Second: what I meant about stirring up the weather doesn't come from any of Bahamut's natural abilities, except maybe flying, and pertains more to his smarts. I figured this: "Hmmm...Odin only fell when lightning struck his weapon..." "Hmmm...Bahamut is a smart one and not acting as a 'test of strenght' this time..." "Bahamut can fly up to the clouds and stir the weather to his advantage. Bahamut wins." Third: a lot of you guys seem to think, that a single hit from the Gungir would be enough to kill Bahamut and that the Gungir can't act as a lightning rod. Why is that?
