Last night I defeated the Emerald Weapon. (I would have posted this then but my internet was out.) I did not have mimic. I did not have W-summon. I did not have knights of the round. I did not have underwater materia. I had 4xcut on all characters, 2 counters on 2 of them (just found out they stack) and 1 counter on the third. I fought entirely with melee attacks and a few limit breaks, using magic only to heal and had to use a few elixirs and a megalixir on account of that mp attack. In the end, right after I told Cloud to use a megalixer we narrowly survived an attack that gave us all limits but left us all near dead, but then the megalixir went off leaving us with max hp and 3 limits which was enough to finish him so not only did I win but I came out unscathed.

Take that, every strategy guide in existence!!!

The stacking Counter was my preferred method of defeating Emmy as well, except I gave cloud about 12 of them along with a mastered Cover. The fight did not take long.

sweeeet I gotta try that some time. I owned the battle arena by putting 5 counters on cloud.

Counter Attack stacks are great, although it's a pain to have to take them all off when you're manipulating or stealing etc. You can stack quite a lot of other materia as well if you have multiple copies. It's fun to test all of them.

Also, it's a shame that Counter doesn't work with 4x Cut despite it being a command materia. If it did, you could get a total of 32 hits in one turn.

I think that's why- it would be way to exceedingly powerful. You'd beat emerald in one move.

Like Knights of the Round and Counter-Mime does? I think it doesn't work because some perfectly workable materia combinations have bugs that haven't been ironed out in the final game. Annoyingly, in most cases.
