So, I'm sure that a tech saavy bunch such as yourselves have probably been using linux for the good part of a decade, but some of us are using Vista as a way to ween ourselves off of Windows.

I recently (2 days ago) purchased a new computer: an MSI Wind. It's a teeny, tiny laptop that has full functionality. The biggest selling point for me was the fact that they advertise that they load up Windows XP on them brand new, instead of Vista. The pricetag isn't too bad either ($500) so I decided to invest. I thought it would be interesting to load up a second OS, but wasn't looking at all forward to blinking the computer to re-partition out the drive. Fortunately, when I got it, the Windows OS was on it's own 40gig partition (of a 160G drive), leaving a hefty block of free space partitioned that wasn't OS crucial.

So I had a friend's uncle throw a copy of Ubuntu on while re-partitioning the D drive into a smaller catch-all NTFS drive, while allotting a decent 50gig partition for the Ubuntu experience. The down side to it all is that I needed someone incredibly linux smart to build the drivers for the wireless, but it's done up right, and I'm wired (or unwired more like) to go.

I'm still learning about Ubuntu, but except for my cravings to go on Ragnarok, I could probably fully switch myself over. So I'm curious, how many people here use Ubuntu (or a version of linux for that matter)?

I use CentOS on one of my PCs at work (the others being XP and Vista boxes). In fact, CoN's webserver runs CentOS, too - I just checked.

I doubt I use it enough to really contribute to your discussion, though for those who feel they really have a need to get away from Windows - I am not at all one of them - it seems like a reasonable choice as long as you don't do that much with it. My tasks are highly repetitive and don't even use the GUI all that much, so aside from using Firefox and Pidgin a bit, I probably couldn't tell you heads from tails on it.

Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN?

I've only used XP on my computer. I tried Vista when my dad got a new PC, thought it was horrible, and he told me to put XP back on it.

I merely can't be bothered to try any linux OS's. XP does the job just fine, I'll stay with that.

I used Ubuntu for a bit back in the day, but it never stuck to me. This is probably because at the time I was a pretty intense gamer and Linux is not the best friends to gamers.

Nowadays, if I got a new desktop, I'd probably put Ubuntu on it just so I wouldn't have to fudge around with all the hassle of another distribution.

My current computer is a Macbook, and since I paid for OSX, I might as well use it, heh. It's not too terrible, and since it's based on BSD, I can do pretty much anything on it that I could do in Linux as it is.

I run a server out of my hometown sometimes when I'm around, and I've been consistently using Slackware on it.

I love ubuntu, but I also love photoshop 6, flash 8, movie maker, and my tablet pc, which I'm not sure will work too well with it, so I figure I'll just stick with Vista (even though it sucks). I was using ubuntu for a while though, back on my other pc, and it was really nice. Seemed to take up a lot less system resources and stuff, which I really liked.

I just had to boot my CentOS machine at work for the first time in about a month, because I needed to do some heavy-duty work in CVS and my windows SSH client just doesn't seem to play nice with our CVS, for some reason.

Anyway, I happened to notice that in most of the apps I had open, they all responded to the keyboard commands that I have used for Windows for years and years and years. Anyone happen to know which came first?

I had an old laptop which was supposed to have WinXP, but just completely crapped out. I couldn't even system-restore it. So I just wiped it clean and installed Ubuntu on it, with the help of a friend.

Unfortunately, I haven't really had much of a use for it, so I have had little experience with it. One thing I have dealt with is installing some shockwave flash video player in order to get YouTube to work--that's where I learned that, in Ubuntu, instead of grabbing and installing functionality piece by piece as I'm used to with Windows, you have a library of stuff to choose from and it tries to supply everything you need.

I've been using Ubuntu now for like a month since windows was being a pain. I re-installed windows xp in November due to a primary hard drive failure. But last month when I went to play Gears on PC windows xp decided to install an incompatible AGP controller driver when I plugged in the 360 wired controller into the front USB like I always do when I play Gears PC. So after that windows ran all sorts of slow even after fixing the AGP controller issue and re-installing my graphics driver.

So I installed Ubuntu and never looked back. So far it's been a positive experience but I due have one little problem that I can't seem to get fixed. If a site has more then one version for like other countries I get the UK version by default instead of the US version. Default language on OS and in firefox is english US but it does not correct the issue. All well it's a minor issue that I'm sure will get sorted out at some point. I even installed the SE add-on which gives me 2 nice themes, a decent amount of dark/skull/fire type wallpaper, and a dark/skull/fire type screensaver.
