So here's the question, have we gotten enough of cloud, Zack and the gang, or should we have New Games,Movies, Remakes etc, based on this series?
I would personally like to see a remake of FFVII, with better graphics, new caves, new materia etc, and maybe another spin-off for a major console based on one of the other main characters. What you guys think |

Quote (Questicles @ 12th September 2008 01:07) So here's the question, have we gotten enough of cloud, Zack and the gang, or should we have New Games,Movies, Remakes etc, based on this series? The answers are "yes, emphatically" and "no, please God", respectively. I won't go into the myriad failings of the original FFVII - I'll try to be more succinct. FFVII was an average video game at best with few real innovations. The real problem now, 10 years on, is over-hype and over-marketing which has led to over-doing. FFVII opened the genre to casual gamers, and I think most of us, at this point, are simply saying "give me my series back." Any possible nostalgic excitement has been stamped on by hardly a second year since 2000 without some kind of FF7 release. See, in order for nostalgia to work, something has to be absent for a time - you can't be nostalgic about your old neighborhood if you never moved away. After FFVII, we have Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, Crisis Core, Before Crisis, and Last Order - I won't even include the crossovers. Now I'm of the opinion that in the space of four games and two movies, you could probably give a concise history of the Milky Way, never mind 25 years in Midgar. Let's add that to the ever-worsening plots of the games (Dirge of Cerberus, wtf), and it becomes clear that this is pandering to fanboys, plain and simple. Cloud vs Sephiroth is past done, past cliche, bordering on kitsch. You defeat someone enough, they become a joke villain like Skeletor from the 80s He-Man cartoon. I think in FF7 part 4, Sephiroth will plan to ruin Cloud's 50th birthday party by baking himself into the cake and popping out with a seltzer bottle full of Geostigma. Would I like to see a FF7 remake for PS3? The question is elementary, because it is sure to happen. FF7 is now more popular than FF. The only thing I hope for is when it is re-released, Squenix will close the FF7 doors forever. No more games, no more movies, no more cartoons, fin. On edit: That would be "Too Much" for those of you that prefer brevity. ![]() This post has been edited by Asylum Outpatient on 12th September 2008 02:32 -------------------- You don't scare me, you talking blobs of oozing slop! As I've said many, many times (not here, but still) if all they did was upgrade the graphics and maybe tweak the battle system, then I'd be ecstatic . Maybe add a few sidequests and hidden crap, but DO NOT CHANGE THE STORY. Do not add to it, and most certainly do not take away from it. If at all possible do not even touch the script.
A few things I would like (mostly gameplay stuff): 1) Real time battles. Not quite like FFXII, but similar. This would seriously add to (at least my) enjoyment. Particularly in places like the Shinra Tower (seriously, three people kill their way all the way up the HQ of the company that owns SOLDIER?) and Gaia's cliffs (how sweet would a suprise attack between ledges be?) and places like that. 2) Change the materia system. A large reason that the game is so rediculously easy is because the materia system is so extremely abuseable. Instead of having the materia learn the skill or spell or whatever, have the individual person learn it, along with the materias bonuses and penalties of course. For example, you put a Fire materia on Red, and lo and behold! a couple thousand AP later he can cast Fire without having the materia equipped, though the stat changes are permanent. I personally think that this system falls more in line with how the FF series has flowed in the past, and will also improve both the storyline (it would make the characters much more individualized, while still leaving them very customizeable), and gameplay (not everyone can do everything, and sources and other stat increasing items and equipment become more of a necissity rather than a bonus). This would really make the game more difficult without having to redo any serious enemy stats and crap. Along with this, add more materia. Give us Aero and Aqua. Give us Holy. Increase the number of Enemy Skills (as in learnable spells, not the specific number of materia). 3) Drastically increase Sephiroth's power. As a final boss, Seph is a pushover. You can beat him without too much difficulty right away. If you stop and actually train, he's barely as difficult as some random encounters. Completly pointless. And he shouldn't be like the WEAPONs either. They're very strong, but one simple plan executed correctly and they can be destroyed without dying once. Sephiroth should be fluid and powerful, those are his natural traits due to his Mako and Jenova treatments. That way there can't really be a specific plan for victory, but rather a general scheme that should be revised as the fight continues. 4) With the increase in graphics that should be expected, expand the world as well. FFVII is contained within an extremely small world, make it bigger. This will be the tricky part. There are two ways they could do this. They could add new places, which I am leery about. They would either have to pretty much isolate it from the story, make it part of a side-quest or something, or integrate it very gently. Or they could simply expand the places that are already there. That is what I want. Make the rest of Junon and Midgar explorable. Make Wutai big enough that it is actually believeable that they could hold of Shinra for a little while. Things like that. Like I said, its mostly just small stuff that needs to be tweaked. That's what I'll be looking for if they remake it. So that's my rant. May add more when I'm actually awake. -------------------- I'm a little Wombat, short and stout Here is my tail and here is my snout But if you get me angry and I start to snarl WATCH OUT OR I'LL BITE YOU'RE HEAD OFF!!! |

Among my own circle of friends I've been a staunch defender of the game despite its failings. That said, I'm tired of all the spin-offs. I'd rather see some original, even if formulaic, new final fantasy game than another rehashing of FFVII. It's a good game and some of the spin-offs were good, but there are almost as many FFVII spin-offs as there are games in the main series (slight exaggeration). |

If at all possible do not even touch the script. This would not work and you know why. I think this is because by adding anything to a game it has to integrate with the story somehow or it just wont make much sense as to why its even in the game (ie: the snowboarding minigame is there because Cloud needs to get into the valley somehow, and heres your sign!). By the way, you could add minigames and sidequests to FFVII, but they would have to be so bland and blatant that they could have almost no effect on the storyline or "script", like the Whyt games they applied to FFIVDS (which actually were quite a fun side activity i thought!). I do agree though that as little of the main plot and story should remain untouched with a possible FFVII remake (as absurd as i think of the idea). If they do continue the series, they should make actual canon games expanding the storyline and holding a similiar style to the original game from which it stems. When one finds it difficult to play and beath the original game after the end of the 2nd disc because you don't give a rat's a** about Cloud or Sephrioth...why would I want to see more?
I mean, the game had it's moments, but it's not like it's the Game Savior or some such. I thought it was too much with the first game, with all the hype personally. So you can understand my distaste for MORE. -------------------- Really Random Quote of the Day: "Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war." - Richard M. Au contrair (I don't know French, don't correct my spelling). They do not HAVE to integrate those other things. I mean a remake of the game only, not the story. During the exact same time period as the game. During that time all those things do not pop up except for Cloud's Nibelheim flashbacks. That seems like the only part of the game that would be really that affected. Now, I have played neither CC nor BC, so I don't really know exactly how they might affect the story. But I have seen AC and LO, and played DoC. Nothing in them really needs to be mentioned in the game. There are only two things that would annoy me that I know of. The first is how they handeled the Sephiroth vs. Cloud scene. Instead of Cloud throwing Sephiroth into the reactor, Sephiroth just jumps in all smugly. That really throws the whole feel of that scene off for me. The second thing is how at the end Zack is sniped rather that going through the firing squad.
So other than those few things, I don't really think any of those other things needs to be mentioned at all. Referenced to maybe, but not directly. -------------------- I'm a little Wombat, short and stout Here is my tail and here is my snout But if you get me angry and I start to snarl WATCH OUT OR I'LL BITE YOU'RE HEAD OFF!!! |

My personal opinion is that they should just let it be and end the series of VII remake/sequel/prequel and whatever else they've done. However, if they do continue to make them it won't hurt me. I can simply choose not to play or watch them if I feel they are destroying the decent bit of story that this game has left.

As much as I like the spin-off's and movie, I have to say enough is enough. The game is ten years old, it was a great game I get it, but I want to see something more original.

I think a remake on PS3 would be the best route here. All of my buddies who played FF7 all the way through and then some, agree with me. Any die hard Final Fantasy 7 fan would love to see this game remastered with a little extras here and there.

I think it would be great to see a remake. A complete graphical rebuild and remastered sound would be brilliant to play. Even more so If they add a fortune of extra secrets and enhanced the existing game. I don't really mind the spin-offs, but I wish the time and energy could be put into a remake.
If I was doing it (here he goes) I would have Dyne as a secret character and I would have masses more story events if you return to places in the third disc - such as a flashback of Elmyra's husband in the war. For me, unlocking or finding story events are far better than a bigger sword. It's all just talk, I know, but it's good fun. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Me on the Starcraft. |

We have definately had too much FF7.
One of the things that I think helps make a game successful is loose ends. It gives something for the gamer to think about, to ponder, to develop one's own answers to. On that note, I dislike that squenix is filling in all the intriguing, unanswered questions. A second reason I have for disliking the current process of milking every last dollar out of the FF7 universe is that it prevents the company from making new, fresh plots and games. I would much rather see new ideas than spin offs and prequels and sequels to an old plot. All these new installments do is build off of old ideas. There isn't much new as far as story goes. I think, in the end, squenix will finish up the whole "FF7 universe" thing by creating one massive remake. I can only pray that this day will come soon. I would approve of a PS3 remake of the original. Anymore of these sub-par games, though, and I will explode. It'd be another thing if they were good, but they're not.
Also, Guitar Hero: Final Fantasy VII would be mildly amusing. |

I love FF7, to this day it's still my favorite game of all time. I'd love to say "not enough", but I kind of disapprove of the way they've handled it. The quality of most of the spinoff stuff is taking away more than it's adding. It also would've been nice if they put everything into a single package, similar to the way you can buy a book full of short stories. Seems like they would have done something with the time period in which Jenova was sealed away by the ancients by now, too.

Definitely a remake; only because the graphics definitly have room for improvement. However, keep everything in the story and script exactly the same. I'm a firm believer that if It's not broke, don't fix it.
Apart from that, I've had enough of spin-offs to last a lifetime. This post has been edited by Nuka'Cola on 20th December 2008 03:44 |

(Dangit, now that I've started hanging out at the TV Tropes fora, I'm too used to typing double-open-bracket "quoteblock" double-close-bracket.) Yes, I agree. Making lots of spinoffs can lead to "stepping on" the imagination (and thus appreciation) of a lot of fans. Keep the aura of mystique around the game, and it lasts longer. (In a similar vein, I predict that Evangelion 1.0 and Evangelion 2.0 will end up not being as highly regarded as the original Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series.) Also, wait longer before releasing an updated remake. But a remake with better graphics would definitely be worth it. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. one giant compilation pack of everything that has been made so far should be made in one big set and have that be that...love the story and such but too much more and a story flaw is bound to occur... even if its small a tamper is a tamper.
yes i think FF7 should be remade graphically and a slightly expanded world map/ extended time in towns more items and more materia should be added...not much more materia though...too much might be a story tamper...a new summon system i think would be cool...the characters shouldnt just randomly disappear... if the enemy is looking at impending doom, you might (in reality if normal people off the street could summon) have to dodge some blasts and blast fodder... a similar battle system to CC might be cool.. it would definitely make them think on the visuals...make it match somehow to AC style...maybe the Kingdom hearts 2 reaction command system? although the limit break system should definitely stay the same as original FF7 beyond that...call it quits... theyre on the verge of beating a dead horse |
