Ken Kutaragi, head of Sony Computer Entertainment, revealed in an interview with the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun Playstation 3 is going to be backward compatible with PS1 and PS2 games.

The PS3 will run PS2 games in the same manner that the PS2 run PS2 games: emulation. Says Kutaragi, "PS one runs on PlayStation 2 through emulation rather than actual hardware. PlayStation 3 will offer the same compatibility for PS2 software and the format will continue forever."

That'd be awesome, Mr. Thou. As for the news article, it shows that Sony's decision to make the playstation CD-based was extremely smart, as they'll remain one-up on Nintendo in the amount/types of games available when PS3 comes out, assuming Nintendo plans on releasing another next-generation device around the time PS3 comes out.

Couldn't Nintendo theoretically make a new system use the same media as the Gamecube, and make it backward compatible with those? Just think: all three released Gamecube games, and all four games released for the new console, all on one device! It would be like the N64, only with six more games than you could get for that console.

I love Nintendo in theory. In practice, I'd love it if they would actually do something occasionally, except for rereleasing old Mario games on the GBA and doing "new" Pokemon games.

This is why Sony got its dominance in the first place, if you ask me. Those Sony chiefs think about what's convenient for you, and that's just what that compatibility is. Also, they sometimes release games (beats Nintendo) and sometimes release memorable games except Halo (beats Microsoft).

I think it is somewhat ironic that Sony was partnered with Nintendo to relase a CD based system in the first place. Nintendo backed out of the deal at the last second and decided to sitck with the cartridge format(Nintendo 64). The CD based system was far enough along for Sony to finish and viola, you got the PS1. Kinda make you wonder what could of happened.

I am truely glad Sony is taking this approach with their systems, it makes their library that much larger. Xbox, more than likely will do this as well seeing as to how it is basically a PC, making backwards compatible gaming much easier.

This makes me infinitely more likely to want a PS3 when it comes out. My biggest reason for wanting a PS2 was that I could still play PS1 games on it. I'm with the people who think Nintendo should get it's act together--Mario Kart 64, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Super Smash Bros. were all okay...but they were also pretty close to all you could do with an N64. I can't imagine why anyone would buy more Nintendo systems until they prove that they're actually going to bother releasing games for them.

More Proof that, whilst soyn does not ahve the best console out there statistically speaking, they definetley realise that they have the best variety of games avalable from the outset.

this shoots down most UK mags predictions- IE that 'PS3 will not play PS 1 games..."
thumbup.gif means i dont need to keep the PS one and 2 in a few eyars time...
