What the...

Is it just me? Or is the link not working?! Where'd the petiton go?! ohmy.gif Grr...

Also, I never played FF9. So I don't have an opinion on what characters from there should be put in.

Actually, I don't think it'll happen. Yoshitaka Amano created the FF6 and FF9 characters. Tetsuya Nomura created the FF7, 8, and X characters. He designed KH and will likely design KH2. I don't think he'd want Amano's characters.

But there is still a chance they can be used. If he doesn't like how they look, he can just get permission to change them. And if he doesn't get permission, well, *shruges* They're both just being stuck up.

I don't care which characters they put in, as long as they remember them all the way through the game next time. I loved the game, but they just sort of forgot about the FF characters after Traverse Town, aside from Sephiroth.

I don't know about putting the other characters in. Seeing FF characters everywhere kind of cheapens the series as a whole, like how they've been doing by assigning the GameBoy games, the movie, and the anime with the titles of "Final Fantasy". FFVII and FVIII (and from what I've heard, X also, though I've never played it) were the strays from the actual series, so putting them in random places where they don't belong is tolerable.
Maybe I'm just scared this is the first step in putting Kain and General Leo on 8-year olds' lunch boxes and book bags.

I agree with DP. theres a risk Final Fantasy will become , dare i say it, like Pokemon and be just a cash-in name...
or worse, like microsoft- error-riddled, but with such a huge fanbase its bound to make millions..
oh wait. that was FF Mystic Quest from what i hear. wacko.gif biggrin.gif

I am confused by how FF7, 8, and 10 are "strays from the actual series." I would assume you mean because they're in a more modern environment? I don't understand how that makes it more palatable that they appear as crossovers in other games. I can't think of anything else that really sets those games apart from the rest of the series.

I think the first step you mention happened long ago. Final Fantasy cashed in with the release of 7, if not even before. Huge marketing blitz, lots of Final Fantasy-branded products like posters, wall scrolls, action figures, resin statues, etc. (more so in Japan than here, of course, but in the global economy what can be purchased in Japan can be bought anywhere). It's not as widespread as Pokemon or YGO in the US, yet, but the steps you reference have already been taken.

So, what is it you're trying to say?

It's been well-known that FFVII was a departure for the series. More than just a modern environment, VII and VIII stray from the Epic adventures that defined FF, and were more of just a (indirect) Good-Guy vs Bad-Guy story. The battle systems were altered to fit more sci-fi than fantasy. IX was a return to what once was. Like I said, I haven't played X, so I have no idea what went on there but just the generalizations people have told me.
I am aware of the cash-in that happened in Japan, but when it happens in the west, a series is classified as a "kiddie fad." Just look at Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and DBZ. Pokémon was actually a long and hard game (my brothers still come to me for help) involving breaking down a criminal organization; in the first season of Yu-Gi-Oh, Kaiba rapes women (blink.gif); DBZ is based on murdering whoever slaughters the most people.

Well, DP, the definition of Fantasy (as per my Intro to Science Fiction teacher in University) is the involvement of magic or a mystical element. Science Fiction, on the other hand, tends to be more towards exploration, "Ask the next question", etc. So really, FF7 is quite Fantasy, if you think of all the references to the Lifestream, and the use of magic and such. It doesn't really ask any questions that have not yet been asked.

Does anyone else have different definitions?

Anyway, this does not have much to do with FF6 being in Kingdom Hearts 2, so I recomend that you don't spend too much time flogging this horse, DP.

That is such a cool idea! I think they should have chars from all the FF's but VI is the most obvious that thy missed out imo.

I think Freya or Eiko from IX, Terra and Celes, Sabin or Setzer from VI would be best.
