I'm about to beat final fantasy 6 for the first time and I just need a bit of help on the best techniques to beat the last boss. Currently I have:

Sabin using Bum rush and Curing Spells,
Cyan using Cleave,
Celes using Illumina and Atma with the offering relic,
Gogo is using flare and bum rush with gem block,
Shadow is thowing imp halberds and ice 3
and everyone else is just smashing them with whatever they got.

I haven't actually tried fighting him yet with this tactic but I'd appreciate it if anybody else gave me some extra stuff to help me win such as what armor to use

When it comes to armor, Genji armor or some other good armor will probably work out, and if you don't have it, use the next best thing. Armor shouldn't be a huge concern because you get a lot of goodies in Kefka's tower and everywhere else.

Dragoon boots are a godsend, especially during the very last battle. Just putting it out there.

I think this battle really depends on the leveling that you did, because sometimes the fighting hits the characters hard, but your strategy seems fine. Just be prepared to use more characters than five the first time around.

Ok, now that I've actually taken the liberty of fighting kefka, he's strong.

I've tried out some extra things eg. Edgar with dragoon boots and aura lance, but also a lot of things still confuse me about the fight.

For starters, why does cleave seem to kill all my people in one hit. I know why it did it the first time (Cyan was confused) but I don't know why it happens all the other times.

Secondly, why is pummel stronger than bum rush. My pummel knocks off 9999 everytime but bum rush knocks off between 9000 and 9500.

Lastly, is there anyway to skip kefkas mighty speech before you actually fight him. Its long and annoying and would save me time if I skipped it.

I probably have a million more things to say but right now I forgot because I am generally a forgetful person but I hope you can answer these

Pummel is based off of Sabin's Strength/Vigor, while Bum Rush (and every other blitz outside of Pummel and Suplex) are based of his Magic Power.

No dice. (Speaking of which, Setzer + Fixed Dice + Offering/Master Scroll = Pain Machine.)

I don't need no more help on this, turns out kefka died in 2 turns (not 2 hits, I'm not that good) and his goner move knocked off like 2000 when I expected it to knock off like 9999 etc. because of how people described it on the internet

Anyway I got it all sorted out now, and I finally feel proud

Most characters are OK to use in the last battle, as long as they're leveled-up enough. There are lots of battles tougher than Kefka, though.

But, anyway, I'm glad you won! Great game, isn't it?
