Actually, they are one of the main classes I use, in fact it's one of the best ways to gain superior items from random humans imo (just invite them, take their crud, and ditch em). But yea, there are a lot of reasons I'll use Mediators.

Talk Skill is actually pretty cool. But outside of using guns, for the most part, Mediators are a bad class. Since Talk Skill is based in part on the character's MA, Talk Skill is better on a Wizard or another class with better MA and more equipment to boost it.
That being said, Mediators are fun to fool around with though. But like the Samurai, it's real draw is it's skillset, but the class itself is not that strong. -------------------- Really Random Quote of the Day: "Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war." - Richard M. I, too, really like the Mediator job class. Like Kylerocks just said, there are better classes that could make great use of Talk Skill, but even so, I like to keep one Mediator around and at least one other character, usually a White or Black Mage, with Talk Skill as a secondary skillset and Monster Talk as a support ability during random encounters.
The Mediator I'm trying to build right now will undoubtedly equip one of the oh-so-cool spell guns and equipment that boosts Speed (Theif's Hat) and magic power. As for the abilities, either Items with Throw Items as a support skill or Battle Skill/Arts of War probably with Concentration. Despite their weaknesses, I like to make a Mediator as a valuable addition to the party! -------------------- "Thought I was dead, eh? Not until I fulfill my dream!" As has been said, Talk Skill is a great ability set that is better served by other jobs. That said, I usually keep one around for inviting random enemies with better equipment and for putting enemies to sleep to prolong the JP-gaining experience of any given battle.

This is going to sound really shallow of me, but I think I'd be more inclined to use Mediators if they looked cooler.
![]() Putting that aside, we all know that Equip Gun is excellent, and I use Threaten and Invitation off and on throughout the game. IIRC, Invitation doesn't work on most monsters, which is a negative. I think an interesting tweak for the game and the Mediator class would be certain spells or abilities that you can't learn with JP - you have to Invite warriors that know them to your party to learn them. For example - let's say there's a level 5 to the elemental spells (Fire 5, etc), and only certain roving Wizards know it. If you can find one of said Wizards, you can Invite him/her, and use that spell now. -------------------- You don't scare me, you talking blobs of oozing slop! I am impervious to pain! |

The reason you're seeing invitation not working on monsters is probably because your talkskill-using character does not have Monster Talk equipped. A non-mediator using talkskill must have Monster Talk as their inherent to be able to use mediator skills on monsters.

Mediators are one of the most fun to use. Especially on the psp with melee and co-op modes. I also love the fact that there's a class who wields a gun and talks smack.

I use a mediator throughout the entire game. They raise your mage's faith, and let you invite tiamats and red dragons. Guns may be weak but they are useful in finishing off critical enemies, and I like having all sorts of weapons and abilities available for my group. Mediators really are one of those classes that makes this game so fun.

They're mostly a stepping stone to Oracles for me, but I linger around for awhile, not because they're skills are typically awesome in nature, but because they can equip guns.

Oracles come before Mediators, like, right before. It's Chemist 2, Priest 2, Oracle 3 to even become a Mediator. But they are a stepping stone for some other things, like bards, and I think calcs, and of course mimes.

It's not so evil to rob via invite. "Help us out, leave your gear, and we'll let you live." "Otherwise, you're just another notch on my gun." I like to have talk skill in most battles - it's easier to raise brave and faith over time than try to load half the work into one fight - floodgates fight excepted. Mediators are really fun to play, unlike other magic using classes that are rewarding but a PITA to train. Few things can stop them if you train them as samurai and raise their braveness.

I usually set up two women as mediators with math skill as their backup.
The main reasons I use mediators: A ) they can equip guns, which frees up the support skill slot for me (I love elemental guns) B ) Talk skill is more useful than Item in my opinion C ) They have a fast move speed, which helps with math skill D ) If they aren't particularly good at magic at this point (which they should be, or you're doing something wrong), you can use Talk Skill to raise their faith This post has been edited by ArcKnight5000 on 19th November 2008 05:19 -------------------- "There is not a liberal America and a conservative America - there is the United States of America. I always try to keep someone with a secondary ability Talk Skill in the party each battle. Invitation has been a clutch abilty in battles i thought i was loosing for sure. Aside from using praise or the faith based form of it when i can't reach the enemy, i never actually use any other of their skills.

I do not really use Mediators as their stats are pretty poor. However, I usually have Talk Skill on a character pretty much all the time.

Similarly, I like female ninja and samurai better, and male summoners and archers. Moderator Edit Apology accepted, but next time use the edit function, please. I use orators/mediators quite much, really. I really like guns, and when I've mastered the class I'll just switch to something else with Equip Guns. And their abilities are pretty cool.

I use them all the time for uping the bravery or faith. Also I love that they can use guns.
The downsides of the Orator are their poor stats and lack of worthwhile direct damage attacks. They are completely reliant on their powers of persuasion to hold their own on the battlefield. This lowers the effectiveness of the Orator down to their ability set. So, you are better served equipping the Speechcraft skill set as a secondary one on a stronger job. -------------------- |
