I'm sittin here readin through the forums, and i see this picture that looks an awful lot like a female version of kefka at the top of the screen. Granted he did look very feminin in the beginning cut scene of the PSX version, but i still wouldnt ever have imagined him looking as girlish as he does at this site.

That is Kefka right? Why is he depicted as a girl?

It is Kefka, and it's not a depiction of a girl. It's artistic license.

Ponytail with cutsie feathers and ruffles in it.
Earrings
Slender neck with no adams apple

If it were a full length picture id bet she'd have boobs too with stelleto high heels and a miniskirt.

Looks like a chick to me.

Kefka is male, because the game says he is. Y'know how they mention that Celes is mentioned as the only female general in the Imperial army? That obviously means that Kefka and Leo are males.

Crees, I don't think you can judge a person's body just by their face. The author could've given him a more feminine face, because it's believable that he could have had one. And with the laugh he has, do you think his adam's apple would be so palpable. Also consider that there are men with ponytails and long hair (Cyan, Edgar, Sabin, Setzer, and too many others because Amano loved long hair laugh.gif ). Like R51 said, it's all about artistic license.

Well I think that most of Amano's guys look pretty feminine with their facial features and such. So I'm assuming more of the original drawings got through into the opening and ending scenes of the PSX version.

He is surely giving us the flirty-eye in that picture atop the forums, but I'm pretty sure he's a guy. Have you seen him in that 4-winged god manifestation? Isn't he shirtless there?

Actually, 6 wings

Kefka is a he. The fact that his a clown dressed as a waiter and he abuses make-up doesn't make him a women, but makes him a lunatic.

It's not uncommon for Japanese-designed characters, particularly boyish males to be depicted in a fashion that is overly feminine. I forget what the actual term for that style is, but it seems to have had a lasting effect on the way young men are designed to look. It's no different from recent games, if you look at the facial designs of Tidus, Vaan and others. Actually, Amano's style tends to make characters androgynous in terms of gender if you only see their faces.

That being said, the question has been answered already: Kefka is most certainly a male.

If Kefka was a woman, do you think that in the final fight, they would show a nude upper body? No.
Problem solved. Ask if you need any other questions about a characters gender.

Kefka is NOT a girl for a few reasons:

1: Celes is the only female general.

2: i believe the team refers to Kefka as "he" does this and "he" did that...

3: Amano's artwork does show everyone in a sort of feminine light, but i believe this was the way his art was meant to look smile.gif

Kefka is definitely a man, though a certain artist on FurAffinity did a series of female version s of all the FFVI bosses, including Kefka.

Well besides the appearances in FF6, there should be more confirmation to people who believe him to be a she, when they either play or check or Dissidia. Case closed

Seems like people haven't stumbled across the likes of Lucius and Bridget.

Kefka is clearly male. That he likes to wear make-up and dress in women's cloths is an entirely different subject.

THE_MAN, the first pic made me laugh. It's so well made that it's creepy and awesome at the same time, just like Kefka. I didn't see the second because you need to be logged in.

Well, I think what we have all forgotten that the game is set in a different period, supposedly based on the 19th century but also having elements of different time periods. Really, if you look at some of the other characters in the game, and what they are wearing, he fits in pretty well. Because he wears make-up and dresses in fancy (as they would call it) clothes doesn't mean he's a woman. I think that's more about his ego than whether he's feminine.

You're completely right, people dressed differently. I don't mind the fancy clothes, earrings or long hair. I was referring to Dissidia where the “girl's set” can only be worn by the females of course, Cloud and Kefka.

I've read that in Japanese Kefka supposedly changes his way of speak from lady-like to very rude in order to make him sound more crazy. So it's just him being him.

I've never known that before. That's interesting, do you mean in the text?

Hmm, that reminds me of an episode of Fresh Prince of Bel Air when Will teaches Ashley to fight.

Mind Your Business

Kefka makes himself look crazy in order to intimidate them. Like psychological warfare.

Oh, wow, I remember that show, it's been a long time. Yeah, something like that but with quicker turns. It's easier to catch in Dissidia with the voice acting, he changes from a high pitch to a low one in the same sentence.

And it's not quite what I remembered reading, but here is Lina Darkstar interpretation of the “son of a submariner” line (I “edited” certain word):
Quote
Kefka: "Grrrr-- S***! I'll get you for this!"

...which was about what I'd expected, except for one thing. The grammar pattern he's using there (he says "kaeshimasuyo") is NOT what fits in context. In fact, the -masu form is polite. And the -yo at the end there is feminine.

So imagine Kefka swearing and yelling that he'll take revenge, but doing so in a way that's... somehow... polite and feminine.

And if you want to take “The Complete” information as valid, Kefka likes to play with dolls. So, the fancy clothes is the last of my concerns. He's just nuts.

He's pouting like a little kid, ain't he?

He's probably acting crazy in both an incongruent-to-the-situation way along with a dangerous way in a possible ruse to catch people off-guard about him.

Well he's obviously nuts, which (and I don't necessarily know what this says about me) I really like him for. It's like when I first watched the Dark Knight, I said, "that was a legendary performance." It was already one of my favorite performances. Man that such a great movie... sorry, off topic...

But what makes Heath Ledger's Joker and Kefka so good is that they apparently are well aware that they are insane, and they utilize it to their advantage. They both wear make-up, do and say crazy things, are prepared to start chaos and anarchy for fun or personal gain (when you think about it, they sorta ripped off Kefka, but I'll respect Ledger and get back on topic, again).

So that's why he looks and dresses that way. Plus, he's not a very masculine villain, very unlike most of the other FF Villains.

Not saying crazy is bad. Crazy is awesome. Kefka is a great antagonist because you can't wait for the time when you can kick his butt. And when you think he reached the lowest and he couldn't possibly do anything to make you hate him more, boom, he has another surprise under the sleeve.

I too enjoyed Mr. Ledger performance. Some people may argue that Kefka is the one ripping the Joker off. But hey, I don't know, I haven't read the comics.

*CofEmperorCloudofDarknessKujaSephirothUltimeciacof* Ohh, you said most of, my apologies... wait, that's about half of them, although you can argue some of them, less Kuja >_>

But, we were talking about Kefka's girlishness. Make-up, flashy clothes, strange speak patterns, likes to play with dolls and the feather, you got to love the feather.

It's funny how conversations like this always come down to "who ripped off who." I really don't think there is much we can do to tell if one ripped the other off. As far as the other villains being more manly than Kefka, yeah, maybe he isn't the most masculine of baddies, but I don't think it's accurate to say that most of the other villains are masculine. There have been quite a few characters in the FF universe that seem a bit girly. I think the important thing here is that Kefka was a great Villain, and the Joker and Kefka (IMO) have nothing to do with each other.

Maybe masculine was the wrong word to use. Toughness was what I was going for. Villains like Sephiroth are powerful villains that use their might to defeat the protagonists. Kefka, however, is a cerebral villain, that uses his intelligence as his greatest weapon. Even when he gains power, look at what he does: he uses the Light of Judgement to demoralize the people.
