i have the 360 version. ive never played talim yet but so far every character is very balenced
but if u know how to use them be very deadly. even the last boss agoll isnt overpowering like soul caliber 3s abyss. i cant believe the depth of the character customization too. online is also good with lag non existent. i love Yoda and i remember hearing that Vader will be downloadible content and Yoda for ps3. 8 out of 8 by me. |

"Soul Calibur" and "balanced" tend not to go exactly hand in hand, iirc.
I tried to give SC a chance, I really did. In fact, I still have some fond memories of it. But between the tiers, the overall strat philosophy, and the gosh-darned out of bounds, I think I made a wise decision to put it down. And Character Customization, if by which you mean that whole create-a-character dealie they had last installment, doesn't really ever entice me in fighters. I mean, why bother creating characters when you know you can't use them in official play? Also, the new "Soul Gauge/Critical Finish" system seems a little suspect to me. I feel like it could cause a lot of sploits and broken characters. The whole tag team mode is kind of interesting, though. And yes, fanboys, I find that Yoda and Vader are a little too gimmicky. But I'm sure it's fun for laughs. All in all, I guess this is a good pickup for a casual fighter. But I don't know, maybe the competitive potential is actually really great right now. But something like that will take at least a few months to be told. Otherwise, a game and franchise like Soul Calibur requires too much invested time for me, especially when I can't really get behind any character designs. But since I'll probably never own it, this is all pretty conjectural. It'd be great if someone could give me run-down of the game in some appreciable level of depth. -------------------- I find your lack of faith disturbing... |

Soul Calibur is my favorite series of fighting games not made by either Capcom or SNK - here are what one of my friends - a medium-hardcore SC player - said about it yesterday night:
Quote Picked it up this morning. Very Happy Buffering and inputs in general are much stricter (including GI and combo timing) a la SC3:AE, but step/8wr is back to SC2 potency. Gotta relearn everyone's new inputs... So yeah, it's a mix of the previous games. On a shallow note, the game looks amazing and the Dolby Digital sound mix rocks. Also, throws can't be GIed anymore (!). Looks like I actually have to learn how to break them now... The texture work and lighting on any armored character = mad pretty, though I have to say it's the backgrounds that steal the show. Half the time when I'm spectating I can't stop looking at the stages... (they're playing Battlefront in the background of all the Star Wars stages, obviously Been playing VS all day with my cousins (James and Joseph, the guys who play Guilty Gear if anyone remembers 'em) and Francis, and the more we play the more I enjoy the game. I was afraid it was a little too stiff at first when I was going throw story mode and people's movelists, but once you get into versus... everyone was jumping lows and ducking throws like the old SC2 days while tossing out the characters' new stuff. Aside from Kilik as my constant main, Maxi is looking amazingly solid even though a lot of his good moves from 3 are now stance-only. Still trying to figure out who my third will be... Talim is actually looking viable this time, Lizardman is awesome, and Yoshimitsu is great but so JF-intensive. And I haven't even spent that much time with most of the cast yet! Too many choices... Xianghua also looks fun again with her ability to cancel almost everything. Overall impressions so far? The game is good. SC2 good? We shall see. I have high hopes with Namdai providing continued support through DLC and patches though. I'm looking forward to playing this. It's gonna be fun. And blizzera, you surprise me! Why only restrict yourself to one version when you might have to use an entire staircase to access it!? This post has been edited by laszlow on 30th July 2008 20:00 -------------------- |

I'm actually wanting to get this one even though I was disappointed with SC3, mostly because it has looked like a solid fighter so far. I might wait a little longer and get more input, maybe wait til a friend gets it and try it out from their copy before I buy. And I really hope Vader becomes available for 360... |

i think namco announced vader for the 360 dlc.
when i bought the game i thought the finishers would be cheap, well i was wrong because they are VERY hard to pull off. once u take a long time attacking your guarding opponent, u have half a second to press 4 buttons (or 1 in some control set up) at the same time. then u win the round. again great online, games very balenced, and even newcomers to the series will be comfortable playing because my friends little brother is actually pretty good! |

I was somewhat disappointed when I got it. They took out Chronicles of the Sword mode, which was my favourite way to play in SC3. They also took out the custom character weapon styles, which I enjoyed more than their various official counterparts, for the most part. And for my last complaint, I'm not fond of having to buy gear in character creation mode - I'd much rather be able to go to a store mode and buy it all there.
On the plus side, the game is gorgeous, and the new skill system is pretty cool. It looks like it has its potential for beardy excesses, and as of yet, I haven't been able to actually break it. The characters seem relatively well balanced, with experience being the primary factor in determining who will win (it's easier to counter a character when you know all their combos, after all). |

I've played the game for a number of hours this weekend. I miss some of Yun-Seong's moves and I can't decide wether I'm impressed with the downpowering of Taki, or enraged by it. The Girl-whos-name-I-can't-remember, the onewho uses a Lance and short sword is great. Yoda is worthless. I'm sincerely disappointed in him. The Apprentice is cool, but a bit overpowered. I want to see how Vader handles (I've only played the X360 version so far. I still say the controller's horrible). On a side note, half the characters look like they're doing drugs. Also, I laugh at Mitsurugi with a lightsaber. -------------------- "I fell off the mountain of words at around the 10,000ft mark. Quote (SilverMaduin @ 4th August 2008 21:41) I want to see how Vader handles (I've only played the X360 version so far. I still say the controller's horrible). Vader handles okay; I'm far better with Siegfried and Raphael, though. His force powers can obliterate the foe in just a couple of hits - if they hit. A narrow area of effect and limited reach make them less over-the-top than they could be. The Apprentice, on the other hand, is ridiculously overpowered, from what I've seen. I've yet to unlock him, but I have fought him a couple of times in Arcade mode, and each time I wound up getting frustrated and quitting rather than retrying. He's definitely the Abyss of this incarnation, in my opinion. So, what's the highest floor everyone's completed in the Tower of Lost Souls (or whatever it's called; I've heard it has different names depending on which version you have)? |

So, anyone have any tips on playing Darth Vader?
Possible spoilers: highlight to view I've been trying to unlock the Apprentice, which is done by completing Arcade Mode with Vader But I keep losing to Mitsurugi. |

I found it kind of easy to beat everything in the game if you did grab attacks all the time. As soon as they get up the will usually block, but your grabs will bypass the block
Overall, I think it was one of the better games in the series. -------------------- Music. defines. society. |

ZOMG TC sighting!
Anyway, my thoughts on SC4: The game engine itself seems much improved from SC3. Speed and hitboxes definitely recieved an overhaul. Plus the AI, even on super high difficulty levels, isn't as 100% hax as the stuff from late Chronicles. The Apprentice is incredibly powerful indeed, but I'm not very good with him. I am just too used to Sophie, I guess. Speaking of which, she's still pretty good, though not the god tier she was in SC3. Should just be lucky they didn't revert her to SC1-2 form. The tower provides its own form of hax to compensate though. Instead of having the AI itself be insane, they instead loaded them down with gimmick skillsets. For instance, one opponent had it so that you cannot throw at all, you can't attack freely for fear of healing the enemy, and that if you manage to land a shot during the intended period when they're attacking, you don't get your counter bonus. I ended up having the gardener ring that one out, then Sophie killed the backup the old fashioned way. Speaking of the gardener, customization definitely took a hit in SC4. The main focus is on the skills/armors system which although nice, is completely irrelevant outside of the tower. The clothes and stuff looks pretty, until you figure out there aren't as many of them, and the new system can't layer things half as well as the SC3 one. The loss of non-Soul weapon styles is a hit to those who would rather not have their customs just be reskins of the main characters. I miss the steel fan myself, but then again I may be a bit biased. And yeah, weapon and armor store being gone is very irritating. I don't like having to go in and out of CC mode just to pick up that one item I just unlocked. -------------------- My soul is bound to the Mistress of the Afterlife, and my fealty is to her always. So let's just hope she doesn't use it as one of her ten daily meals. |

I love the SC series. I don't own a system yet for IV so I have to wait until I get a 360 or a PS3 to own it.
The only cringes I have is that they only added one new character (Hilde) to the offical Roster and have about 8-9 guest characters we will never see again. Vader is a good choice for a Star Wars Rep but Yoda is WAY too small for a fighter like this as the majorty of the characters fighting him can't grap him. Luke would have been a better choice IMOA. Starkiller is interesting but can come out as an ad for Unleash. Also the Critical Finishers: they seem kinda gimmicy. I've been playing sense 2 and got SB for the PS1 so if I'm killing someone I'm not going to try an autokill. And if I even try to do it the game registers it as an continuing of the combo. I can't do it with slow characters in practice mode because of that. If they add it back in to V I highly recommend them to make it flow better with combo as it overriding the combo. Although, One big plus in my book is the orginal boss: Algol (Spelling?) All the games previously have had a repleca of another character or a random weapon boss. Algol has an orginal moveset and is not a broken boss character. They did a spended job with him. So my hopes for the next one: Have at least 3 new characters for play right off the bat. Keep making orginal bosses Have the Critical Finishers cancel into combos bring back Hwang and Li-Long, please? Do not allow someone to force you to make green migits. -------------------- Blah Blah Blah Tidal Wave Spam! |

I'm a big fan of the SC series, and I got IV on Christmas, yay. So far the games lives up to all expectations, and it's fun to play against my brother. Though I have to agree that Yoda is pretty annoying =/

It's all over after 18 hours or so of gameplay. The tower thing is just irritating and goes nowhere near to replacing the Chronicles of the Sword in the previous series.
Customisation is fun for a while until you realize that no matter how much you buy for certain charactor, there will always be more pointless items to spend your arcade money on. Waiting around for a Critical Finish is annoying. It's like trying to use a Limit Break in FF8 when you just can't be arsed. I can't get online play but still rather disapointing I thought. Although fun while it lasted. |
