Quoted from someone else.

"Is there any information regarding the period inbetween the "disappearance" of the Cetra and the rise of Shinra? That seems to be a big "blur" in FFVII's world history. From wall the Ultimania translations I've every read, none state anything about the actual world history BEFORE Shinra rose to glory. It's like nothing happened(it was just some big blank area of history)

Well, since Shinra seems to be a company that was only in power about two-three generations and the Cetra have disappeared centuries before, it's a heck of a blind spot. However, it's also fanfickers paradise, so let's not tread there too much, okay?

All I know is that before Shinra entered the mako energy market, they were weapons producers, and they provided arms for some sort of conflict in the world, in which Wutai was involved. But as there is a whole lot of vagueness, there is not much more to go on. But, as we all know, it originally was FFX... tongue.gif

But I agree that fanficcers may frolick their fictional storylines among this era, and speculate away.

Edit
No, I don't believe that FFVII ever was or will be FFX. There was some hare-brained speculation from square I think, but it's all a joke.
Btw, yay, 100th post.

No, that was quite serious and official. FFX takes place on a different world far in FFVII's past.

There was that connection in FFX-2, so, it basically is official. It does just seem like a little joke or way to get fans' brains into theory-mode. I personally think the connection is inane.

I think the reason why that the "big blank area of history" you refer to isn't ever mentioned because it's not that important. I admit it would be interesting to know, but FFVII focuses on the Cetra and Shinra, which is all the player needs education on in order to understand what's going on.

Shinra history-book censorship.

"Before the ShinRa, life, as we know it, DID NOT EXIST. If you think it did, TOO BAD."

I'm sure the paid historians were quite satisfied with that conclusion. It's genius on paper, really.

In other news, it's an interesting question that makes you wonder how it was that Rufus' old man was able to rise to such power and claim dominance. Although, to that end, the involvement with arms-dealing would bring in a hefty paycheque as the modern world has proven. Then, holding a monopoly in energy production would do the same. It's not like there're any other power companies out there... As cool as that would be.

I'm curious to know how this links to anything about VII's past though.. if it's on a different world then surely there is really no connection between the two other than which took place first. I don't see that this would affect anything. I know that there is much that is not known about the past in VII but we do know a bit about the cetra and their past. There is a lot that's untold, but I have to say that I agree with the theory of shin-ra censoring the history books. It what many government tyrants have done throughout the history of our world. Why not their's too?

Well, it may not directly belong to this specific topic, but:

All, who played FF IX, know, that there is a point out at FF VII in it.
When you enter the Weapon shop in... well, I think it was "Lindblum", the weapon dealer says sth about a guy with a HUGE sword.
->Brainstorming..... ding ding! It's Cloud! Or Zack... well, nvm...
So, what happened with the Lifestream and Mako and all that stuff? What happened to the 3 Continents?
And the biggest question: How the fuck did the Weapon dealer knew about a person, who lived over 500 years ago?
Cause in the ending, you see the world of FF VII 500 years later....

Interesting, isn't it? xDD

Now, whats your opinion? =)

By "It's all a joke" I meant, it's all a joke to me, like pfft, I don't give a rat's tail.

The ShinRa censorship in all likelyhood sounds most feasable.

But I do wish that the "conflict" that occured that ShinRa provided weapons for, and Wutai lost their military power in would be a bit more explained.

But I would like to say Xeo, that that sword has ALWAYS bugged me. I saw it my first time and was hoping I could find/buy Buster sword, but alas.

Xeo, I gotta say that I find it a little far fetched to simply say "there was a guy with a huge sword, so it must have been Zach of Cloud." I think that square does this stuff simply because they know they can get publicity by having a bunch of gamers sitting around discussing this kind of thing in a forum... but really.. who would do that??

in the lindblum weapon shop there is a big sword which greatly resembles the buster sword (because it is the buster sword lol) and then when you examine it a text box appears, i think its zidanes thoughts, saying "im sure ive seen a spikey haired guy carrying a sword like this around". So its not that far fetched because that was clouds basic description in final fantasy, always refered to as the guy with spikey hair. so this is making past references to ff7 being in the past (sorry about being a little off topic, but there was a comment saying that this idea was a little too far reached, so i wanted to post this). on topic, shinra will have probably censored the history, although they couldnt stop people from finding out about their weapons deals in the war involving wutai.

I dont wanna get even more off topic, but at the end of ff9 during I wanna be your canary, someone (zidane maybe?) says something like "no cloud or squall will hinder us!" Theres some more but i cant remember any.

and theres a few references to ff7 in ff8. I just cant remember them. But i caught them almost immediately.

This makes more sense.. but the post above my last one was not enough to support it.. he simply said "there was a huge sword" which means absolutely nothing at all.. and obviously a notion like that is far fetched. I can understand now, only given YOUR reasoning though.

If ANY game has a connection to FFVII it's FFTactics. Um, hello, Cloud's in it. I seriously think Cloud's role in Tactics takes place while he's MIA in VII. And that wicked case of MaKo poisoning he got, maybe it was a result of a ride in Mustadio's Magic Mystery Machine! (forgive me, I just love the Beatles). I almost wonder if Tactics is the future of VII, with the airships in ruins, and the white and black materia being treasures.

Any-way.... back on topic. Before the Shinra there was the Cetra, who were nearly destroyed by Jenova... so whatever was there had to end in an A.

In the case of FFIX That was just an easter egg when Zidane mentions the spiky headed guy.

When it comes to the War they mention it the most in Yuffie"s sidequest,

im pretty sure the war was involving Wutai trying to become an empire (much like Japan in WWII). Shinra since they were the leading arms dealer rose up and throughly crushed Wutai, took there weapons(aka Materia) and turned them into a tourist attraction to maintain their economy(also much what america did to Japan). And after the War of course Shinra is the world's hero, so they take up provideing energy for the world and having total power

This of course is just what i believe happened

I think with the case of FFIX when they reference the Buster Sword its just poetic licence. The makers are allowed to put in little references like that coz they know fans of the series will appreciate them. it certainly doesnt imply that its the same world.
Although i have heard about how Cid's second airship was supposedly found not built by Cid, and it resembles ones from X. This however is probably due to the designers having influences in both games. That said, the wording in FFVII suggests that the Cetra didnt settle AREAS of the planet then move on but actually planets themselves. For that reason it seems more than likely that at some advanced period in any of the FF histories the culture developed the ability to travel in space, settle and terra-form planets and then move on.
This would clearly explain the story of VII. Say Yuna's great great great great something travelled to VII's planet and settled it. They continued to settle the planet using advanced technology (which would seem magical) but some of their culture broke away (maybe for religious/social reasons) Eventually a being from another planet (jenova) arrived and all but wiped out the X civilisation, leaving behind the break-aways who then became "normal humans". These normal humans would all but certainly retell the stories until they became legends, and the advanced race of the Cetra could easily become the nomadic, magical race as believed in VII.
It seems plausable, but not necessarily relevant or essential to enjoying any of the games. flag-red.gif
