Ah, the 'ol movie auditions thread. I think it was the first topic I made after the forum revamp damn near a decade ago. Wonder how many times it's been made since then...?
Can't remember much from my choices other than I thought Tim Roth would've made a kick ass Kefka. -------------------- |

Heath Ledger would have been awesome Edgar. Did you SEE him in Casanova? He looked like a flippin' cosplayer.

If it's an animated FFVI movie, you're talking about voice actors, right?
Also, it's spelled Hayao Miyazaki. I doubt that he would ever consider making a Final Fantasy movie. -------------------- You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one... |

After a few *cough* years of consideration, I finally came up wih wha I believe is the mos perfect cas selection for the movie. I say that and I still can't figure some of them out. Anyway, here it goes
Terra - for the life of me, I can't think of anybody. Seriously, absolutely no one. Locke - Leonardo DiCaprio. For real, and not just because he looks like him. Edgar - Kenneth Brannagh Sabin - Ewan McGregor (incidently, I believe you could even switch the roles and it would turn out good) Celes - Kiera Knightly Cyan - Liam Neeson Sezter - Johnny Depp Strago - Sir Ian Holm Leo - Laurence Fishburne. And not just because he's black. Gestahl - Sir Sean Connery. Under the knowledge that would never happen, my second is Christopher Lee. Kefka - Gary Oldman. Don't even argue. -------------------- I fear my heart and fear my soul Life goes on, it surely will, Without me and I wonder: Will I ever see light again? Life goes on... |

Oh, right, animated movie. >_> In that case Heath is out, but I agree with Setzer being done by Johnny Depp. The man would be just perfect for it.

I don't know why, but I can't help but like the idea of David Bowie as Setzer
He was awesome in the Labarynth and not bad in Arthur and the Invisibles, I just feel he could pull off Setzer's attitude |

I see Depp would be a perfect Setzer, quite possibly the best of the cast I came up with. My only concern was that it was too small a role for someone of Johnny's caliber, but it'd be great, specially if he used that English accent. Bowie to me would be a little weird in the role. Plus he's way too old.

Christine from the Phantom of the Opera would make a good Celes. Especially if they include (which they should) the Opera House Scene where she would have to sing. But if they make an animated movie then I guess it could be whoever.
Liv Tyler... (I think that's her name, the one who playes Eyowin in Lord of the Ring) should be Tina. Or you could strike that and reverse it for good actresses for the characters. -------------------- .¸•´¨¯¨*°•.,¸¸,•´¦♥¦`•,¸¸,.•°*¨¯¨´•¸. The idea of this is pure fantasy, but the unrealistic feasibility of the idea of doing something like this gets in the way of me being able to get into this game. Doing a movie based on this would really just be us seeing the same thing without any real change to it to make it worth it. Superheros translate well because they're known more for the characters they are rather than the stories they're in. Books being made into movies works because it's an entirely new presentation of a previously existing movie. A lot of video games are basically watching a movie, and the parts that aren't would be what you would leave out (random encounters, equipping, stat manipulation, etc.). The video games that have been made into movies so far have been platformers, FPS, and Fighting games. Those types of games are so gameplay-intensive that they leave story-telling options open. RPGs (FF especially) are so plot-intensive that going to see a FFVI movie would be like playing it again without getting interrupted by having to actually play the game in order to progress the story. And if they were to try, how could they do it? FFVI has such an expansive story that you can't fit it into two hours. You could easily leave out some of the peripheral characters, like Gogo and Umaro. But would you be pleased if they left out Mog and Shadow? What if they left out important character moments, like Cyan's Dream, Rachel's resurrection, or Edgar and Sabin's coin toss? Unless they trimmed it down to Terra, Locke, Celes, and Edgar, there's really no way to do it in a short enough time for a movie.

Have you ever heard of Lawrence of Arabia?
I agree with much of what you are saying, but I don't see it quite as skeptically. While it would be quite difficult and would require a great group of filmmakers, FF6 has enough great story and relatable characters to be a decent enough film. As far as fitting everything in, there is definately plenty you could take out (and I would have no problem taking Mog out completely), but I believe they could fit in more than you would think well enough without it feeling to smooshed together. Basically wha it comes down to is not following the game verbatim, but having the wisdom to change it up, rearrange parts, take out some stuff and add other parts in. IMO it comes down to getting a stellar cast that can make this out-of-this-world concept and make it truly believable (which is surely no small task) and hopefully make it more than a budget film about a video game. My vote goes to Scorsese -------------------- I fear my heart and fear my soul Life goes on, it surely will, Without me and I wonder: Will I ever see light again? Life goes on... |

i'm no expert but i don't think ffvi would be in Scorsese's style.(Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Final Fantasy VI)
neither is it Jackson's or Coppola's or Spielberg's. i think you would need someone who is first of all a ffvi fan(like me) who will be dedicated to being truthfull to the game(like me) and who is incredibly talented and intelligent(like me). the problem is that movies based on video games are normally bad. Tomb Raider is watchable, mainly because of Angelina Jolie, but that is the only one. they need to make one like Advent Children, an extension of the story. -------------------- |

I think it would need to be a series of movies, or maybe a series of hour long episodes.
It would make sense to break the stories up into movies along the WOR and WOB (those could even be the movie's subtitles), but even then I think there would be too much to cover per movie. There's a lot of stuff in the games that could be cut out and rearranged, but to make it fit you'd have to cut out everything but the beginning and the end, and have a adventuring montage in the middle to connect them. But yeah, a TV show or an OVA would work, the different story arcs could be broken down into the episodes. I think shows like Lost and Heroes shows that westerners want stories, and with the recent popularity of fantasy movies, people would probably like to watch a high quality mature fantasy TV show. You'd definitely have to cut out a lot of characters though, or else every other episode would be about finding a new character, lol. |

I think of Jack Nicholson as the Joker in the orignial Batman flick when I think of how Kefka ought to be portrayed in cinema.

I was kidding earlier when I said Scorsese should do it. Yes, his style definately not what this film needs, though I do love a number of his films (Casino is ftw). I can't think of anybody who could take it on, and personally I think that's good. A film adaptation wouldn't need a really big name director but then who knows - case and point, LotR, Peter Jackson was a nobody who did schlock horror D-movies. You never know who could pull a magic act and create an incredible epic-fantasy film.
Anyway, I still can not stress this enough: Gary Oldman. Even if it were an animation, Oldman is Kefka. I'm sure he could pull off an incredible voice. Quote Funny story, when I first heard Oldman was going to be in Batman Begins I immedietely though to myself "Wow, the Joker's aging now." I think of Jack Nicholson as the Joker in the orignial Batman flick when I think of how Kefka ought to be portrayed in cinema. -------------------- I fear my heart and fear my soul Life goes on, it surely will, Without me and I wonder: Will I ever see light again?
