This is a question that I have been asking myself for years. What the heck is ultros doing in this game? What the heck was squenix thinking? He is random and odd and has no connection to anything at all.

U got a good point there man. He first appered when Sabin bumped his head with that raft, right? It was pretty unnessary. The biggest disapointment is his fate, workin as some receptionist guy at the arena. I wish Sabin sliced him up into some calamari.

Well I mean, in these games they usually have a recurring boss... Seifer in FFVIII, Beatrix kinda in FFIX... Someone to trouble the party repeatedly. But usually the recurring boss at least has SOME relation to the story. Ultros is just... the random purple octopus that stalks the group for no apparent reason. Sounds like the ramblings of a drunk person.

Maybe his presence is food for thought for players' fanfics. It's up to us to give him a reason for existing.

Not everything needs to be connected to the main plot, for instance, imagine that you're Octopus royalty and quite mischievous, as our buddy Ultros is. Now, imagine some adventurers bump you on the head while traveling your stomping grounds, thoroughly beat you and then take off? Well, I'd surely want revenge. Besides, I kind of think he likes the abuse.

At any rate, I don't need a reason for him to be around, I absolutely loved his presence in the game.

Yeah, I don't think that Ultros needs to have any connection to the plot; his presence was entertaining and enriched the game as a whole. I mean, if the game had only the things that were necessarily to the plot, it'd be rather stale, I think. You might as well ask yourself the purpose of the Phantom Train or moogles or the opera or the plot in general.

If you really want Ultros to have some connection with the plot, though, then you can say that he caused Sabin to get split up from the party, and from there Sabin encountered Cyan and Gogo. Also, through a battle with Ultros the usefulness (to the characters) of Relm is discovered.

I thought he was annoying, at first, but by the end I had come to love him. XD he's pretty funny!

That's true.

If he hadn't been there for the Opera scene, it would've been much less...eventful.

And Locke most likely wouldn't have been close enough to Celes to be able to get onto Setzer's airship what with the unexpectedly swift way he nabbed Celes

Ultros is my favorite non-playable character. His irrelevance sustains me.

To be annoying...in all honesty.

Actually if you read some of the works of shakespeare, humorous villians are placed in the storyline all the time.

Whats not to love about a purple octopus who stalks you the entire first half of the game? Not to mention hes the easiest boss to beat in the game all the times you fight him.

Yay seafood soup lovers!

Personally Ultros reminds me of Barney. A big purple thing that stalks people and has a soft spot for little kids. I think the Final Fantasy team created Ultros for 3 possible reasons:
1. To create a comic relief for the game in general
2. They were drunk and just decided to make him
3. To annoy the gamers out of their socks!

1) so after the main storyline kefka can still do his epic laugh at something as pathetic as ultros working as a receptionist

2) A cliche villain that has very hairbrained schemes that always fail in a comical fashion.

I have to agree to that! Ultros is mad! (but not as mad as kefka)

Why, my good sir? Why? The question you should be asking yourself is WHY NOT. Why did no game before FF6 have a talking octopus who generally tries to muck things up, then fails and, in a post-apocalyptic ruin, takes up a job as a receptionist? I mean, it sounds like a bizarre fever-dream version of my life post-college.

Anyway, Ultros is there to make puns.

Lets just think about what FF6 would have been like with out Ultros.
1. Sabin wouldnt have split with the group to find other recruits, before there reunion in Narshe.
2. Like stated before, the Opera would have been "Uneventful". It also should be mentioned that if youre party where to never have landed on the stage right when Setzer made his grand appearance, the Returners probably wouldnt have been able to catch up to hm in time while still on the balchony.
3. If you never met Ultros in the Cave next to Thamasa, Relm probably would have never revealed her awsome Scetch Ability to the party.You probably wouldnt have even gotten Relm if it wherent for Ultros! And it should also be mentioned that the founding of the Gold Statues would be a boring event if Ultros didnt crash the party . : P
4.last but not least, if Ultros never appeared during the Air Force battle, before you boarded the Floating Contanent ( I know, my grammer isnt the greatest. XP ) you would have probably never met Caupon. I dont now if that has any significance, but think of it this way: If Ultros did appear there, then its most likely his "Buddy" wouldnt have shown up either. Hense, the monster wouldnt have existed, and to push this a little further, there probably wouldnt have been a "Typhon" Summon Materia.

So, if you consider all these possibilities, the game probably wouldnt have had as many characters, and there probably wouldnt have been no Coupon, which is my personal favorite Monster out of the entire francies X ). I hope this answers "WHY?",
