Alright, I'm playing through ff3 right now and Ive noticed some flaws even though the game thus far is nothing short of excellent... Still, the main charectors lack emotion like when
Possible spoilers: highlight to view dies. I mean c'mon he was my favorite guest charector of the game thus far.... Right now Im at the point where you need to get the earth fang...Pretty hard.....Desch None of the boss's are too hard either except for Gigameth. Still, im really enjoying the plot of the game so far..... So what flaws have you seen in FF3? |

I don't like the job system. Customizing your characters by mixing abilities from several different jobs at once, a la FFV and FFTactics, spoiled me in that regard.

It's pretty fun, but there's one thing that *really* pisses me off: no save points in dungeons, only on the world map.
Now, for the first 95% of the game I wasn't bothered by this. Even in Eureka (a tricky optional dungeon near the end of the game) was manageable. But the last dungeon? A ****ing massive palace and chaos world-type thing, with six or seven bosses scattered throughout, but no save points anywhere. I had to teleport out and retrace my steps four or five times total to heal and get most of the treasures. NOT fun, Square-Enix.... -------------------- |

I agree with the save point thing, and the characters for the most part lack depth

Quote (painreaver @ 12th June 2008 01:24) I agree with the save point thing, and the characters for the most part lack depth I take it y'all are talking about the DS version. I've played the NES version, and the onion kids seemed to be made pretty much to have a very generic-character feel to them, purposely. FF3 was still in the vein of FF1 and FF2, of having a "build your own party" feel to the game, based on what I've seen. There wasn't much of any emphasis on the game providing any characterization of the onion kids to start with, and I'd assume that, despite putting a little bit more emphasis in the DS version (as I've heard they did, though I haven't played the DS version at all), the developers still didn't give them much personality. -------------------- Check the "What games are you playing at the moment?" thread for updates on what I've been playing. I haven't played it since last summer, so I might not be able to cover everything with this list.
Likes: - Of course the obvious: Western players can (finally) experience FF3. - Really showcases what the DS is capable of. I think the precedent of putting FF3 and FF4 in 3D for a handheld will pave the way for FF5 and FF6 3D releases, and hopefully further. - Pretty difficult. That's a good thing, because I'm finding re-released FF games to be a lot easier than their predecessors. Dislikes: ((DISCLAIMER: I know this game was an early FF, and the makers were trying to stay true to the original in some respects. However, I wouldn't have liked these things any more in 1990 than I do now.)) - The soundtrack is solid, but it can get a bit repetitive. I really get the impression that I'm listening to the same four songs throughout the game. - I don't like that there is no benefit to levelling in a job class if you switch. I think at the bare minimum, you should be able to put in one ability from your former job. Add that to the FF1-ish battles, and it makes the fight system go a bit stale after a while. - I didn't like that you get this long, beautiful intro movie at the beginning, then no others during the game. I'm sure that that is in part because there's only so much FMV you can fit on a 1.5''x1.5'' square, but it seemed a bit of a tease. - As mentioned, no save points. - I like that there is the option of interacting with other players, but I don't like that several aspects of the game are contingent on it. I don't know anyone else that plays the game, so I can't fight the option boss or get the Onion class? Weak. - Bit of an untidy storyline at times. For example, at the end, Doga goes to find Desch, and it's like: "Hey, what were you doing?" "Oh, I just saved the world." "............Good job. Come here for a minute." I know it seems like I have more dislikes than likes, but I really did have a good time playing it, and I thought it was a solid game all-around. I believe we are all victims of the pokemon age...
By this, I mean we like games that have almost unlimited save potential. I know that the world map has always been a saving point, but I guess it wasn't until the later FFs that the save point in the dungeon was added, yet we miss it dearly when it's not there. Personally, I feel that the lack of save was the breaking point for me as well. As a game on a handheld system, it was nice that they threw the quicksave option in, but it doesn't have to degrade tactics to make a fully available save option. Also, I know that there were some game mechanics back in the day that would render this almost completely useless (i.e. - a pre-determined number of steps for a "random" encounter), and it would afford people to manipulate luck factors and break out massive strings of avoiding battles, but hey, what's an RPG that you can't have a level of manipulative control in? -------------------- If internal struggles were as enjoyable and glamorous as the self conflicted wars within video game characters, we would all be statues, reveling in perpetual self war. -Me Play me on Rock Band 2, GH-WT, or any other Xbox GH! Savepoints is my only complaint about the DS Version. It adds difficulty but when you fight though all the extra bosses in the final dungion and get killed by the final boss and lose all that progress is depressing. That's why in VI they invented the save points.
