Within a few years' time after my schooling, I aim to be a professional writer. I'll be attending Columbia College in my hometown of Chicago in about a year or so and I will major and minor in two out of a plethora of fields associated with writing. The college I attend now has a transfer program with Columbia as well as most midwest colleges/universities.
To pay my own way through school, I have a layperson job. -------------------- "Thought I was dead, eh? Not until I fulfill my dream!" Seifer Almasy "The most important part of the story is the ending." Secret Window "Peace is but a shadow of death." Kuja |

Workin a 'need moniez' job right now as a Customer Service Representative. Just started a few weeks ago, so I'm still in training. Worst part is it's only part time right now, but hopefully that means I'll have enough time to beef up my skillz in what I do want to do.

I work for a Courthouse in the Traffic department..
After people go to court, I'm the person who gets to take the money that the judge said they had to pay. Needless to say, the general consensus is that they hate me lots and hope I die in a big fire. What makes it better, is people down here drive like crap. So I suppose it's job security. -------------------- ..DDR..Maine.. ..Hikaroo-chan no Deviantart.. <Tiddles> And I love how people suggest "Why not call it my great name?????" when their name is clearly the worst thing ever. <Tiddles> "How about ; Mozilla Xplorer & Mozilla Xpress." <Tiddles> How about you die in a fire? |

I study environmental science at college, focusing in stream hydraulics and forest ecology. I've done a lot of park service jobs in the past, and through some connections I'm probably going to find work as some kind of park ranger or field scientist for the park service or GIS.

I work part-time security at a National Guard Armory. Which basically means I sit in a little room and watch TV until I get a call about suspicious activity (which almost never happens). Then, at 9:00, I do a walk around the grounds, lock all the doors, and shut the gate. Easiest job I've ever had.

I'm a student, studying English in Exeter. During the holidays, I work at a cinema. My job title is 'multifunctional,' which means I could be taking tickets, selling them, selling sweets, selling popcorn, cleaning up crap people have left in the cinemas and just generally tidying. Each of these activities is equally as boring as the others. Not a great job, but it's money for the necessities when I'm at uni - cigarettes, booze, chocolate and toilet paper. In that order.

I am an operations analyst at Capital One. There is no typical day, especially as I am transitioning to a different set of roles within our program. I work in collections, and am moving to a role more specialized with our dialers, to make them harass all of your more efficiently. I also do data capture and analysis and communicate on a very regular basis with many of our outsourced agencies, as I don't work at an actual call center. We manage them remotely.

while i dont have a job, my friend and i have been planning out multiple video games. ive already drawn all of the weapons for the trilogy of games, and i will probably get started on the free roam one in a few months. my friend is working on the script, we have the characters and storyline. we have who dies, why, when, and how. we have pretty much everything but the script and the music. my 'official' title is co-project lead, and we've been improving upon some things, re-writing the script, adding characters, and stuff like that since 7th grade (im a sophomore by the way). so yeah, we've been working for a while, and im determined to make it happen...ive spent WAY too much time and shunned WAY too many people while im working to have it not happen. we've even talked about what engine we will use, how to make our own, what company we will be with to learn the more advanced stuff, and have already gotten offers...until we told em we were 16 (not the brightest idea, but it had to happen sometime) so yeah.

I teach 7th graders math on the south side of Chicago. I'm at a charter school which I really like now, a much more supportive environment than my first teaching job (which was a nightmare.) The only problem is the hours and commute. Our teacher hours are 8:00-4:30, plus I'm coaching track now, so I leave my apartment at 7 and get home around 6:30, then have to spend half the evening grading things and lesson planning. I'm not complaining, though, I'm more than likely going to be back there next year.

Me and my brother want to get into movies. He wants to be a director and I want to be a producer. He's in college right now, but he wants to go to film school sometime soon. I'm only a junior in highschool so I don't know if I'll follow him or not. I know I want to study business management, maybe even marketing, because that's a big part of filmmaking. I've also thought about going to a technical school because I'm interested in making games too. Right now though we're just trying to find money to make short films.
dont chocobos rule? Quote while i dont have a job, my friend and i have been planning out multiple video games. I'm the same way. I've created some game ideas mainly just for fun, but they seem like good ideas for video games. I hope to someday be a writer-producer, but I'd like to be a game designer too. Both interest me. Hopefully I could do both. This post has been edited by BlitzSage on 29th March 2008 15:40 -------------------- |

Well, the eventual plan is to work in film as an actor, and maybe a semi-professional opera career on the side. For now, I'm also in a similar "need moniez" situation like that of Narratorway. I'm a part-time assistant manager for Laser Quest Ottawa, though I still pull in about 40 hrs. a week. It's all right and has largely different goings-on from day-to-day, but I'd prefer to be getting paid to act now. Effing agents and their pricey startup fees...

I'm studying ceramic engineering at Alfred University at the moment. During the summer I mow lawns, take out bushes, miscellaneous other lawn maintenance stuff, and during the winter I shovel driveways. No real job yet. Hopefully this summer I can land a co-op or internship with some company and make t3h big bucks (or at least make some steady money).
I don't know what I want to do after I graduate. As of right now, the plan is to graduate a year early and then return for grad school the following year. I would like to eventually get a PhD in ceramic engineering and go teach somewhere or do research. I have awhile to figure all that out, though. ![]() -------------------- Is PJ |

I work for a local advertising paper. I make ads that appear in the paper. Unfortunately, 95% of the ads we get from customers are repeat business or purely text, so there isn't much room for artistic creativity. I also do paper work and generally get my skills abused by doing other people's work and doing a lot of computer fixing crap that I wasn't hired to do.
It pays the bills I guess. On a good month I can make around $100 profit, which will allow me to save up for the inevitable necessity that needs to be bought/repaired/etc. I wouldn't mind the job at all if it were not for my married couple bosses. They are a little incompetent and treat everyone like they're teenagers in high school. -------------------- -- You're Gonna Carry That Weight -- |

I'm an English Literature student for the most part, with some background studies in Art History and Theater. I'm aiming at becoming an English teacher at some point in the future, though I'm taking my time to get there.
At the moment, I work part-time at a Hair Salon and Spa as an assistant to the hair stylists and color technicians. Basically, I wash, blow dry, curl or straighten people's hair, prepare and apply dyes and clean up after everyone. There's hardly much work involved really, though I do have to run my hands through the hair of some rather odd people. Still, it pays the bills. -------------------- Okay, but there was a goat! |

Sounds like some good ambitions! Always aim high. I work for the Police. It's a criminal intelligence gathering, and reassurance of the public type role. I love it, it's very fulfilling making a positive contribution to society. I tend to find some people hate you and some people love you for doing this job. I work for a health insurance company processing claims. I am currently on a special project doing financial adjustments to claims that either processed incorrectly the first time or that the providers have sent in corrections to. I actually work from home doing this. My company pays for my internet access and has given me a computer to work from. It's a good job and pays really well considering I don't have a degree or anything.

I guess since I've been cyberstalked in the thread already, I'll go ahead and chip in.
![]() Yes, I work for the NBA, have for a little over two years now. For the last year I've been working out of my house, as we left the NYC area, where my office was. I might not be able to do that forever, though, so I might be checking out other options later this year. Can't be arsed to type more about it at the moment, since those who are savvy enough to find my resume can surely find other threads here in the forums where I talk about the job, but here's a picture from me in luxury box Friday night at Boston Garden. http://www.alvies.org/random/imglib/image....51&image_id=890 -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? |

Quote (fatman @ 30th March 2008 19:11) Wow, so many young students here. Sounds like some good ambitions! Always aim high. It's strange isn't it? I always thought there was a gap between high school pupils and older graduates on this board, with only a handful of students. Also the number of prospective (and qualified) teachers is interesting. I still don't know anybody on here very well. Right now I'm a supervisor in a supermarket. It sounds crap but the staff make it great. It's the only job I've had where the seniors and the staff know what they're doing, get on brilliantly well, and everyone looks out for eachother rather than covering their own back. I think part of the reason is because we're such a small store: only six or seven in at a time. I was duty manager (running the shop) for the first time this week and I will be regularly from now on. Sounds petty but it's good for a 19 year old's CV I hope. I was a climbing instructor for the majority of 2007 but the money just wasn't enough and I needed to spend a lot on certificates to earn more. Now it's good to just go out to the crags for fun, and it really is! I'm saving for a £1000 TEFL course so I can travel abroad and teach English, even if I have to stay in the UK for experience to begin with. A few countries only grant VISAs to graduates so I'll need to go to uni in the near future - this being the second year that I've deferred. Truthfully, I just can't be arsed going. People say that it's great for the social and the sex life but, really, that's only because you're cramped into uncleaned halls with some 18 year old Soc Anth student breathing down your neck, and the only way to escape is to drink offensive £3.99 Californian red wine and let her have her way. I've already had that experience and it wasn't very fulfilling. On top of that, there are long-haired Medicine students - fresh out of living with their parents and still on their payroll - who think they're great because they take eight different drugs throughout the week and abandon their studies. Then the next week they tell you exaggerated sex stories because they've got nothing genuine to offer. Oh, and there's the many that try and simultaneously look like Leon Trotsky and Charles Bukowski, sip expensive wine and talk in soft voices. And the so-called "rah rahs" that don't seem to do anything except shop, lie statically in bed with their boyfriend, study, and phone their mum for two hours a day are just not worth putting in the effort for. Don't feel offended, I'm sure not everyone's like that, just the ones I meet. With Edinburgh, the words "it's the place where English (as a nationality) students go who didn't get into Oxbridge" seem to echo everywhere I go - and for good cause too! From what I gather, uni is partially for people without a social or a sex life, and it gives you a bad one. I can do without a degree for a little while longer. -------------------- Scepticism, that dry rot of the intellect, had not left one entire idea in his mind. Me on the Starcraft. |

Does college count as a job?
![]() I'm currently studying Materials Science and Engineering at Columbia University as an engineering undergrad. After this ordeal is over, I want to go to grad school. Maybe a PhD even, it depends on what happens between now and then. It's not a formal job, but occasionally I get paid to play violin for things such as weddings, anniversaries, etc. It's good money when you consider the amount you get paid for the amount of time you spend. -------------------- Music is a mysterious thing...
