I hate the way they set it up this year. All my good sleeper teams are playing each other (Butler vs. South Alabama? Really?) and there's whole sections where I don't like anyone. Oh well, maybe I can still redeem myself somewhat with a little luck.
Did anyone else watch the bracketology on ESPN? They picked enough chalk to fill a classroom. I don't think Bilas picked an upset in his entire bracket. -------------------- Hip-Hop QOTW: "Yeah, where I'ma start it at, look I'ma part of that Downtown Philly where it's realer than a heart attack It wasn't really that ill until the start of crack Now it's a body caught every night on the Almanac" "Game Theory" The Roots |

Just came back from the ACC Tournament in Charlotte. AMAZING.
UNC vs. VTech was probably the game of my life. So exciting. I will remember that day for the rest of my life. Watching Duke lose 2 hours later didn't hurt either. Anyway, this is going to be a crazy year. A lot of unpredictables, and some shakey 1, 2, 3 seeds. I'm really pumped to get cracking on this bracket. Except I only have, what, two days to stat crunch? Inconceivable! -------------------- I find your lack of faith disturbing... |

They basically put all the mid-majors versus each other and all the big schools versus each other. It seriously feels like they are trying to manufacture a mid-major deep into the tournament, by giving them a bye out of the first round. I want to see a good mid-major upset somebody in the first round, but instead I have to watch (in my opinion) an overall weak first round of matchups. -------------------- The clouds ran away, opened up the sky And one by one I watched every constellation die And there I was frozen, standing in my backyard Face to face, eye to eye, staring at the last star I should've known, walked all the way home To find that she wasn't here, I'm still all alone -Atmosphere "Always Coming Back Home to You" |

We've broken the 20 player barrier, and even though it looks like we're going to end up with fewer people than last year, because of a few lazy gits who know about the game but haven't bothered to get in, it's a good number.
Therefore, $20.00 in an AmaCoN gift certificate to the winner. And if we make it to 25 players before 12:20pm American Eastern time tomorrow, which is when picks have to be in and when the games start, I'll up it to $25.00. -------------------- "To create something great, you need the means to make a lot of really bad crap." - Kevin Kelly Why aren't you shopping AmaCoN? Alright, it's time to get down and dirty with the first analysis of the 2008 tournament. As is the usual, I will say goodbye to teams who do not have the capability to win the tournament at this point. We have to wave goodbye to Nick and Hamedo, who neglected to make picks. However, Nick is spared the indignity of last place by making a single pick of UNC in the first round and earning a precious point. Well done! 21 participants remain. Who will be eliminated...next?
Sweet Sixteen Picks: North Carolina: 20 Texas: 20 UCLA: 20 Memphis: 19 Kansas: 18 Duke: 17 Louisville: 16 Tennessee: 16 Georgetown: 16 Xavier: 15 Stanford: 15 Notre Dame: 14 Clemson: 11 UConn: 11 Wisconsin: 10 Pittsburgh: 10 Michigan State: 9 Vanderbilt: 8 Drake: 8 USC: 7 Washington State: 6 Marquette: 5 Purdue: 5 Butler: 4 Kansas State: 4 Oklahoma: 3 Davidson: 3 West Virginia: 3 Kent State: 2 Gonzaga: 2 Arkansas: 1 George Mason: 1 Boise State: 1 St. Joseph's: 1 American: 1 Portland State: 1 Villanova: 1 Siena: 1 Mississippi St: 1 Texas-Arlington: 1 Temple: 1 Oral Roberts: 1 Kentucky: 1 Austin Peay: 1 Texas A&M: 1 Western Kentucky: 1 San Diego: 1 Baylor: 1 Arizona: 1 Sweet 16 Picks Remaining: Mimic: 14 Gabe: 14 Lasz: 14 Sweet: 14 Neal: 14 Josh: 14 Death Penalty: 14 Ryan: 14 Tidu: 14 Gears: 14 Super Moogle: 13 Clock Doc: 13 Kappa: 13 Bobbo: 13 Del: 13 Mike: 13 MeHael: 12 Blaine: 12 Baralai: 12 Xenon: 11 Olly: 10 Elite Eight Picks North Carolina: 15 Kansas: 12 UCLA: 10 Texas: 7 Memphis: 6 Duke: 5 Georgetown: 4 Louisville: 3 Stanford: 3 Tennessee: 2 Wisconsin: 2 USC: 2 Pittsburgh: 2 UConn: 2 Xavier: 2 Notre Dame: 1 Siena: 1 Michigan State: 1 Oral Roberts: 1 Marquette: 1 San Diego: 1 Purdue: 1 Elite 8 Picks Remaining: Super Moogle: 8 Mimic: 8 Lasz: 8 Sweet: 8 Josh: 8 Death Penalty: 8 Kappa: 8 Ryan: 8 Tidu: 8 Gabe: 7 Neal: 7 Clock Doc: 7 MeHael: 7 Del: 7 Blaine: 7 Mike: 7 Gears: 7 Baralai: 7 Bobbo: 6 Xenon: 6 Olly: 5 Final Four Picks: North Carolina: 15 Notre Dame: 1 Louisville: 3 Tennessee: 2 Kansas: 12 Siena: 1 USC: 2 Wisconsin: 2 Georgetown: 4 Memphis: 6 Michigan State: 1 Pittsburgh: 2 Oral Roberts: 1 Marquette: 1 Stanford: 3 Texas: 7 UCLA: 10 UConn: 2 San Diego: 1 Xavier: 2 Purdue: 1 Duke: 5 Final Four Picks Remaining: Super Moogle: 4 Mimic: 4 Gabe: 4 Lasz: 4 Sweet: 4 Neal: 4 Josh: 4 Death Penalty: 4 Kappa: 4 MeHael: 4 Bobbo: 4 Ryan: 4 Tidu: 4 Blaine: 4 Gears: 4 Baralai: 4 Clock Doc: 3 Del: 3 Olly: 3 Mike: 3 Xenon: 3 Title Game Picks: North Carolina: 12 UCLA: 9 Kansas: 5 Duke: 5 Texas: 3 Memphis: 3 Notre Dame: 1 Louisville: 1 USC: 1 Georgetown: 1 Michigan State: 1 Del is the only one missing a title game pick. This is because he didn't pick one. You can't lose if you don't pick...but you can't win, either. It's both really strange and really not that even with so many ridiculous upsets (Sup, Tampa?) so many people still have so many late-round picks.

Well, none of you dicks decided that today would be a good day to lose, so I'm stuck here doing analysis for the remaining 21 players. There are a few players hanging on by a thread (Gears needs a lot of crazy junk to happen to win by 2; Olly needs San Diego to make it to the final four; Gabe, Del, and Xenon are near-death) and Ryan can only tie, thanks to Elliot's cheap-ass picks. Nonetheless - the situation as it stands:
Correct Sweet 16 picks so far (out of 8): Bobbo: 7 Sweet: 6 Blaine: 6 Mimic: 5 Gabe: 5 Lasz: 5 ClockDoc: 5 Death Penalty: 5 Kappa: 5 Ryan: 5 Mike: 5 Gears: 5 Baralai: 5 Super Moogle: 4 Neal: 4 Josh: 4 Tidu: 4 Xenon: 4 MeHael: 3 Del: 3 Olly: 1 Possible Sweet 16 picks tomorrow (out of 8): Del: 7 Super Moogle: 6 Mimic: 6 Gabe: 6 Lasz: 6 Sweet: 6 Neal: 6 Clock Doc: 6 Josh: 6 Death Penalty: 6 Kappa: 6 Mehael: 6 Bobbo: 6 Ryan: 6 Tidu: 6 Mike: 6 Gears: 6 Baralai: 6 Blaine: 5 Xenon: 5 Olly: 4 Elite Eight still alive (out of 8): Death Penalty: 8 Tidu: 8 Mimic: 7 Lasz: 7 Kappa: 7 Ryan: 7 Blaine: 7 Baralai: 7 Super Moogle: 6 Sweet: 6 Clock Doc: 6 Josh: 6 MeHael: 6 Bobbo: 6 Mike: 6 Gabe: 5 Neal: 5 Del: 5 Xenon: 5 Olly: 4 Gears: 4 Final Four/Final Two/Champion still alive (out of 4/2/1): Super Moogle: 4/2/1 Mimic: 4/2/1 Lasz: 4/2/1 Death Penalty: 4/2/1 Kappa: 4/2/1 MeHael: 4/2/1 Bobbo: 4/2/1 Tidu: 4/2/1 Blaine: 4/2/1 Baralai: 4/2/1 Clock Doc: 3/2/1 Olly: 3/2/0 Ryan: 3/2/1 Mike: 3/2/1 Neal: 3/1/1 Josh: 3/1/1 Sweet: 3/1/0 Gabe: 2/1/1 Del: 2/1/1 Gears: 2/1/1 Xenon: 2/1/1 More detailed per-person analysis when more of you jerks are eliminated. -------------------- Hey, put the cellphone down for a while In the night there is something wild Can you hear it breathing? After today's games, we must bid farewell to Xenon and Olly, who can no longer win, thanks to losses by powerhouses San Diego and Siena. This leaves us with 19 competitors and 16 teams left. For your entertainment and my boredom remedy, I have put together another analysis given today's results.
Sweet Sixteen Teams Picked: UCLA: 19 North Carolina: 18 Kansas: 18 Memphis: 18 Texas: 18 Tennessee: 16 Louisville: 16 Xavier: 14 Stanford: 13 Wisconsin: 10 Michigan State: 9 Washington State: 5 West Virginia: 3 Davidson: 3 Villanova: 1 Western Kentucky: 1 The next section is analysis by competitor. The set of five numbers corresponds to correct sweet sixteen picks, then teams remaining for the last four rounds (out of 8/4/2/1). Each competitor has been grouped on how their outlook is for the rest of the tournament. Good Bets: Super Moogle - 9/5/4/2/1 SM can win by as many as 12 points, and though this may seem small, he has a completely intact final four and nobody with similar enough picks to threaten. The sooner Memphis is knocked out, the better, and UCLA going far is critical to his success. Mimic - 10/6/4/2/1 Due to his use of the 'popular picks' tool, Mimic is set in this competition. He can win by as many as 16 points, and his pony is UNC - if UNC were to get knocked out early, it would almost certainly spell doom. Memphis making the final four would also be a huge boost. Laszlow - 10/6/3/2/1 Lasz can win by as many as 17 points, and the team that sets him apart from many others is Stanford. Were Stanford to make the final four, along with UNC and UCLA, it's unlikely that Lasz can lose. UCLA is an uncommon champion, so UCLA winning will give him a clear path. Death Penalty - 10/8/4/2/1 Death Penalty has a completely intact elite eight, one of only two competitors to do so. He can win by as many as 31 points, and would benefit from Texas and Wisconsin making it to the Elite Eight. As Laszlow also has UCLA and North Carolina, Wisconsin making it that far is critical. Kappa - 10/6/4/2/1 An uncommon champion in Kansas makes Kappa a good pick to win the entire tournament. He can win by as many as 46 points overall, given that his final four choice of Texas and his champion of Kansas aren't widely held. If these two come true, look for him to be there in the end. Bobbo - 12/6/4/2/1 Bobbo can win by as many as 55 points due to his champion pick of Texas. His hopes hang almost solely on the longhorns, though a final four appearance by Xavier wouldn't hurt anything. Tidu - 9/8/4/2/1 Tidu is dangerous with all 8 elite eight picks still alive. He also benefits from a very uncommon champion in Memphis, only chosen by one other competitor. If Memphis makes a run, Tidu and his possible 29 point win will be dangerous and tough to top. Mike - 11/6/3/2/1 Mike is an interesting choice for a safe bet, placed because of many unusual but very plausible picks. Texas making it to the championship is a big boost, but elite eight appearances by Michigan State and Xavier will also be helpful. Mike can win by as many as 22. Safe For Now: Neal - 8/5/3/1/1 Neal can win by as many as 21 points, and Louisville and Kansas making it to the final four are critical for him to remain in the competition. The loss of Duke was devastating but not a nail in the coffin - Stanford making a run can also be in his benefit. Josh - 9/6/3/1/1 Josh's pony is Stanford in helping him win the championship. With his second place team out, Stanford going as far as possible - as long as UNC still wins - will aid him in a championship run. He can win by as many as 12 points. MeHael - 7/5/3/2/1 MeHael has Louisville going the furthest out of any competitor, and he lives and dies with them. His uncommon pick of UCLA as the champion, as well as Louisville there at the end, will help him win the title. He can win by as much as 26. Del - 8/5/2/1/1 Placed solely in the 'safe for now' column to piss him off, Del's pony is Michigan State. As far as Michigan State goes in the tournament, Del is still alive. Louisville continuing to win will also help him rack up the points. Del can win by a whopping 61 points. Looking Grim: Gabe - 9/5/2/1/1 The losses of Marquette and Duke left him reeling. Tennessee is a big pick for Gabe in the final four, allowing him to still get points that very few others can get. His eventual champion, Kansas, is shared by three others, so he is still alive. Gabe can win by 11 points. Sweet - 11/6/3/1/1 The only competitor left without an active champion, Sweet has very little margin for error. He needs North Carolina to lose as soon as possible, given that he can only win the tournament by 5, and no #1 seed can win the tournament for him to be the eventual champion. Clock Doc - 9/4/3/2/1 Clock Doc's choice of Memphis as the champion is the main thing keeping him in this tournament. If they go out anytime soon, he can't win the tournament. He can win by as many as 11 points. All But Out: Ryan - 10/6/3/2/1 It happens to somebody every year. Somebody else's picks are too similar, and you are out by attrition. While Ryan can still put up a very respectable amount of points, Elliot's picks are much too similar. Xavier must beat West Virginia, and Memphis must not make the final four for Ryan to win. The best he can do is tie. Blaine - 9/5/3/1/1 Though Blaine can still win by 13 points, there are way too many miracles involved in that to happen. Davidson and the 12 seeds would need to continue their tears and knock out powerhouses Kansas and Wisconsin, and Texas would have to win the championship. Gears - 11/4/2/1/1 Gears can win only by two points, so there is almost literally no room for error in his remaining picks. Gears needs the same miracles as Blaine does - Western Kentucky must beat UCLA. Kansas must win the tournament for Gears to have a shot. Baralai - 10/6/3/2/1 Baralai, like Gears, can only win by two points, so his picks must come true. He must have a UNC victory over UCLA in the championship, Villanova must beat Kansas, and Xavier must beat West Virginia. It's still possible - just very, very unlikely. That's all. More of you need to lose so I have to write less. -------------------- Hey, put the cellphone down for a while In the night there is something wild Can you hear it breathing? In this installment, we have a mass exodus of participants who just didn't want to stick around any longer. Due to key losses, mainly by Tennessee, we must wave goodbye to Gears, Gabe, Sweet, Ryan, and Blaine. This knocks our list of competitors down to 14 and makes my life much easier.
Once again, I will group the competitors by potential. Same four groups apply, just with fourteen competitors. The numbers next to each player's name correspond to Correct (so far) Elite Eight Picks, Possible E8 tomorrow, then the remaining three rounds (out of 4/2/1). The groups have to do with how soon you can be eliminated, and how complicated the scenarios are. Good Bets: MeHael 3/2/3/2/1 Can win by 22. Safe - cannot be eliminated tomorrow. Bobbo 3/3/4/2/1 Can win by 51. Safe - cannot be eliminated tomorrow. Super Moogle 3/2/3/2/1 Can win by 12. Can only be eliminated tomorrow if Memphis, Stanford, and Villanova win. Death Penalty 4/4/4/2/1 Can win by 31. Can only be eliminated tomorrow if all four lower seeds win. Safe For Now: Kappa 4/2/4/2/1 Can win by 46. Can only be eliminated tomorrow if Villanova and either Wisconsin or Stanford win. Mike 3/3/3/2/1 Can win by 18. Can only be eliminated tomorrow if Stanford and either Wisconsin or Memphis win. Looking Grim: Mimic 2/3/4/2/1 Can win by 8. Needs a strong Memphis showing - if Michigan State wins, he is eliminated. Lasz 3/2/3/2/1 Can win by 9. Needs a strong Stanford showing - if Texas wins, he is eliminated. Neal 2/3/3/1/1 Can win by 13. Needs a strong Stanford showing - if Texas wins, he is eliminated. Josh 3/3/3/1/1 Can win by 12. Needs a strong Stanford showing - if Texas wins, he is eliminated. Del 3/2/2/1/1 Can win by 56. Needs a strong Michigan State showing - if Memphis wins, he is eliminated. Tidu 3/4/4/2/1 Can win by 25. Needs a strong Memphis showing - if Michigan State wins, he is eliminated. All But Out: Clock Doc 1/3/3/2/1 Can win by 3. Needs strong showings from Kansas, Davidson, and Memphis - if either Villanova, Wisconsin, or Michigan State wins, he is eliminated. Baralai 4/2/3/2/1 Can win by 2. Needs strong outings from Memphis and Villanova - if Michigan State or Kansas win, he is eliminated. -------------------- Hey, put the cellphone down for a while In the night there is something wild Can you hear it breathing? This is the reason that March Madness means so much:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/sto...ht&lid=tab1pos2 What a fantastic story. Yeah, it's a silly use of money, sure, but this is a once in a lifetime chance for the players AND their peers, and they'll never once regret that they went to Davidson. Also, go Louisville. We must start off by saying goodbye to Josh, Neal, Lasz, Del, and Baralai, all casualties of war today. Texas's win knocked off the first three, Del was a victim of Memphis, and Baralai was killed by Kansas. Alas.
Teams picked to make it to the Elite Eight: UNC: 9 Texas: 9 Kansas: 8 UCLA: 6 Memphis: 6 Louisville: 6 Xavier: 5 Davidson: 0 I am still giving people their analysis based on tomorrow's game. Also, if we assume that every game from here on out has a 50-50 chance of being won by either team, then the percentage by each person is their percentage chance of winning this tournament. As you can see, at the very least, one person will be going home tomorrow. There is only one chance of a tie, and it is split between Elliot and MeHael. Bobbo - 31.25% - 6/4/2/1 Cannot be eliminated tomorrow. If Texas is the champion, he automatically wins. He can win with four different champions and can win by 51 points. Kappa - 13.28% - 6/4/2/1 Cannot be eliminated tomorrow. If Kansas is the champion, he automatically wins. He can also win with Louisville, but only in one situation. He can win by 46 points. MeHael - 12.89% - 5/3/2/1 Eliminated tomorrow if North Carolina wins. He can win with four different champions, however, Louisville or UCLA must make the title game. He can win by 18 points. Tidu - 12.50% - 6/3/2/1 Cannot be eliminated tomorrow. He can win with either Memphis or Davidson taking the title. Memphis must make it to the championship game, and he automatically wins if Memphis takes on Davidson for the title. He can win by 13 points. Death Penalty - 10.16% - 7/3/2/1 Cannot be eliminated tomorrow. He can win with three different champions. UCLA is key, as there is only one situation in which he wins and UCLA isn't in the title game. He can win by 19 points. Mimic - 8.98% - 5/4/2/1 Eliminated tomorrow if Louisville and Xavier win. He can win with three different champions, though UNC needs to be in the title game in all but two situations. He can win by 8 points. Super Moogle - 3.91% - 5/4/2/1 Eliminated tomorrow if Louisville wins. He can win with either UNC or Xavier. Texas also must beat Memphis for him to have a chance for his second CoN title. He can win by 8 points. Clock Doc - 3.91% - 4/3/2/1 Eliminated tomorrow if UCLA wins. He can win with either Memphis or Louisville, but Memphis must be in the championship game for him to win. Kansas must also advance to the final four. He can win by 3 points. Mike - 3.13% - 5/3/2/1 Eliminated tomorrow if Louisville wins. He automatically wins if UNC beats Texas in the championship game, but these are also the only situations in which he wins. No other games matter. He can win by 14 points. -------------------- Hey, put the cellphone down for a while In the night there is something wild Can you hear it breathing? My apologies for not getting my picks in in time. I wish I had, because my work bracket was nearly spot-on.

Well, the final game is of course tonight, between Memphis and Kansas. At this point, there are only two people who can win: Kappa takes it with Kansas, and Tidu wins with Memphis. Kappa, in fact, can finish no lower than third regardless - final results and prize tomorrow.

With Kansas' inspired play late in the game and in OT, and Memphis' utter lack of skill at the free throw line, Kappa takes the prize for 2008. The Kansas win, of course, was a huge boon to all of the folks who took them to win it all, and I maintain that I hate you, I hate Kansas, and I hate Bill Self. But I guess better him than Memphis. :\

I knew choosing Kansas that they would win and I wouldn't. That's just the kind of program it is.

Whew, I had doubts about my Champion all through the tournament. But in the end, I guess I'm glad I swallowed some pride and took Kansas. I felt that the evidence was enough to take the risk, and for once in my Pick'em Career it all paid off in the end.
See you all next year! And until then, I reign supreme. -------------------- I find your lack of faith disturbing... |
